Adapting non-Trek species...

TJ Sinclair

For your games (or fiction), have you ever taken an alien species from a different sci-fi universe and put them in your version of Trek? It's something I've done from time to time, and I often think about it when I discover a new world that tickles the right fancy.

I'll be honest, I don't really have a reason for asking other than idle curiosity. I'm bored, and I'd like to know what other people think. :)

For me, probably, my favorite ones to adapt in the past have been the Minbari and Narn from Babylon 5, and the Delvians from Farscape.

What species would you put in Trek, and why? Would they be Federation members, a new contact, adversaries? Or nothing more than an archaeological oddity, remnants of an ancient civilization long-dead by the 24th century?

I imagine for most, you'd do something like this for an NPC race for an adventure or campaign, but have you ever had a crewmember (PC or NPC) from such a "translated" race?

I've included a few species in some of my fiction, the Minbari and the Twi'lek being two of the most recent. Both happen to be non-UFP members, but whilst the Minbari species are close allies the Twi'lek species are more akin to the Orions, commonly seen as outlaws or mercenaries (for them I did decide they came from a warm, arid planet and didn't sweat, but rather pump blood through their 'head-tails', the large surface area of which helped cool it to moderate their body temperature).

Not in Trek, but I’ve played with the idea of Trek races, and others in B5 from a Galacto-Political Point of view.

How would Klingons, Romulans fit in the advisory council? Easily I imagine. But the more alien-alien civilisations, like the Borg? Replicants from SG1? The Ori, Asgard? Cylons? Sontarons. The predator folk? The visitors from Hangar 18, or V, or Independence Day.

I may have taken Sinclair’s line too literally, that sooner or later, everyone comes to Babylon 5.
