Adam Baldwin and Conventions

All that said, I wouldn't sign a petition to get him removed from a con. I would love to watch some of my female friends have a shot at him in an open forum. If he thinks he can be involved with something like this, appear at cons and expect to be asked about his body of decent but largely insignificant work instead of being booed offstage because of this, I wouldn't mind seeing him realize it in person.

Yep it is pretty much a guarantee that will happen. Which may be the biggest pause for Supanova if it became clear there was an organized group of people expecting to fire all phasers on this topic. I'd be interested to know how his other con appearances have gone since gamergate?

I saw him a couple years ago at Supanova pre all this, didn't know about his other views and went purely as a Jayne fan. He was a good speaker, good session all round, nice to fans etc.. now I feel there are some views he has that I would have to research and see what was actually said and possibly boycott him (I haven't looked very hard, it's just reading stuff in fansites at this point).

Have I got this right? A woman develops a popular game.
Wrong! :)
She was dating a gaming journalist. Her ex decides he doesn't like that, so he accuses her of using sex to be successful?
No. She apparently was cheating on the guy with said journalist, who during the time they were sleeping together wrote a favorable review of the game, and pushed the game in several articles.
Baldwin creates a hashtag to protest corruption and insincerity in gaming journalism, and a buttload of gaming losers who likely live in their parents' basements coopt the hashtag in order to threaten and harass anybody they think breathes funny in their games' general direction? On Twitter?
I'm unclear how people can use a hashtag to threaten and harass, but there have been claims of threats being made by Sarkeesian and others with no proof of the threats existing, and the Internet exploded with cries of outrage and condemnation. Sarkeesian, a person who attempted to shame the gaming industry for using the "damsel in distress" plot device too many times now claims to require 24/7 police protection because she was threatened by said basement dwelling gamers on the Internet.
And everybody's mad at Baldwin for not collapsing in shame because other people are using something he created in a way he never intended?
You are actually surprised at the vastly overblown reaction many people have towards those who do not agree with them?

Just so everyone knows the score, TremblingBluStar has been consistently debunked, out-argued, and shown to lie in all aspects of this debate elsewhere on the board, so now he's decided to take his ears plugged and mouth screaming routine on the road, hoping to find a more receptive audience.

... there have been claims of threats being made by Sarkeesian and others with no proof of the threats existing, and the Internet exploded with cries of outrage and condemnation.

Copy of the threatening email sent to Utah State University prior to Sarkeesian making an appearance there, one of many threats she's received:

Apparently the campus and local police and the FBI considered it a valid threat, but TremblingBluStar knows better.

Your move, TBS.

That's one scary letter. Sarkeesian did cancel her appearance due to that threat [story at HuffPost; I couldn't get the update regarding that to open at the story you linked to].

Holy cow. If that's not threatening, I don't know what is...

TBS's posts on this subject have been a blend of wishful thinking, blatant ignorance, and pitiful misogyny, and I am amazed that he continues to post such terrible content.

You're wasting your time, TBS. Like I said upthread I got no dog in your hunt. Pick a fight with somebody else.

Locutus and others have already covered TBS' fucked up take on the threats but this is worth pointing out, too:

No. She apparently was cheating on the guy with said journalist, who during the time they were sleeping together wrote a favorable review of the game, and pushed the game in several articles.

Why are you lying?

This is simply not true. Grayson never reviewed her game, let alone "push it". He wrote one article about some show she was part of but even that was before they became more than professional acquaintances.

Kotaku's official take on it:

Kotaku said:
On March 31, Nathan published the only Kotaku article he's written involving Zoe Quinn. It was about Game Jam, a failed reality show that Zoe and other developers were upset about being on. At the time, Nathan and Zoe were professional acquaintances. He quoted blog posts written by Zoe and others involved in the show. Shortly after that, in early April, Nathan and Zoe began a romantic relationship. He has not written about her since. Nathan never reviewed Zoe Quinn's game Depression Quest, let alone gave it a favorable review.

So please stop spreading blatant misinformation. You should feel ashamed. You have repeatedly been called out for this bullshit yet you're still choosing to spread these lies. What's your motivation there?
There's only one reason for spreading lies even after they've been throughly debunked. Again: You should feel ashamed.

Your posts are pretty disgusting but I'm starting to think that's all you want to accomplish.

I am so disappointed in you. Shameful.

^^ Yeah it's a very convenient part of the narrative when it's spun that way - and critical for the "ethics in game journalism" smokescreen that tried for a veneer of legitimacy at first - but breaks down entirely upon any examination.

The dude was Jayne. Cool.

A lot of better-known actors have been bigger asses; they remained popular. My generation had the likes of John Wayne and Jane Fonda.

Yeah, he seems to come off as an ass in his tweets and other posts. He's certainly a conspiracy theorist, once tweeting that Obama probably wanted ebola in America for some reason. So definitely an ass.
He's a bit kooky by conservative standards, I believe he actually writes for BreitBart.com or at least has some association with them, he used to plug their articles all the time on his Twitter account. I once got into a debate that turned ugly on Twitter once. He was attacking gay people and atheists for some reason. He seemed to think that atheism was a belief structure with set rules. I told him that really the only thing they agreed on was that there was no god and that was about it. He started arguing with random nonsense which he never provided any evidence to support it, but I tried to stay polite. Because despite his beliefs, I enjoyed him as an actor. Especially as Animal Mother and Jayne. But he kept going on and on about what's the atheist position on gay people or some other issue that drives him nuts. I started noticing that he was deleting his tweets and I called him on it. He claimed that it was him trying to keep his timeline clean. I asked it was really because he was ashamed of his terrible debating skills and he blocked me.

The man is an angry asshole who gets his entire worldview from extremely right-wing blogs, which he accepts without question. He's also a coward who can't stand to lose. Him being involved in GamerGate, which are mainly a collection of teenage boys and manchildren, didn't really surprise me. The -gate suffix is also not surprising given his complete lack of original thought.

Even though you've already been refuted on your silly point up there, and made to look incredibly foolish to boot, I'm going to double down and link to even more online threats she's received to make you look even more terrible than you already do.

A Week's Worth Of Hate Tweets

What's amazing was how easy it was to make you look so bad.

Even if this was true, which it is not. Why should anyone who isn't them care? People have slept their way to success throughout all of human existence. You're an adult, don't you have better things to be concerned about? I'd rather listen to some random person's theories on Bigfoot instead, because at least it might be interesting. GamerGate is most childish, embarrassingly pathetic response to something so trivial I've ever seen. It makes the more extreme reactions to the Star Trek reboot look mature and rational.

Debunked, no. Out-argued, absolutely! I simply don't have the time or will to address each and every objection to my opinions, especially ones that contain playground taunts often heard from the mouth of a third grader.

I never lie. I offer my opinion, and if proven wrong I admit it. Note I said proven. Vitriol and ad homenim attacks are not proof.

Wow! You are being a petty individual.

*sigh*
Police: No Risk to Students
USU police, in conjunction with several teams of state and federal law enforcement experts, determined that there was no threat to students, staff or the speaker, so no alert was issued.

Which, of course, totally justifies Sarkeesian using the next tragic school shooting for more attention grabbing and man hating.
Not a coincidence it’s always men and boys committing mass shootings. The pattern is connected to ideas of toxic masculinity in our culture.
Those are Anita Sarkeesians own words, not mine. You clearly have made a substantial emotional investment in defending this cretin. If the above quote following a school shooting doesn't at least make you pause and think "what?", there really is nothing left to debate.

100% agree. I never have, and never will claim GamerGate is anything but an extremely silly "movement". If they want to tackle the overall issues of American journalism as a whole, I'd be with them. There are real issues of bias and corruption in the American news media that actually matter because they spread misinformation and influence opinion, and ultimately elections and public policy. These are real issues. If a person is hung up on bias in games journalism they really need to get out more.

On the other hand, I'd be pretty upset if the group I am part of were continually attacked and portrayed as misogynists by the click baiting blog-sphere.

If anyone is emotionally invested, it's you. Because if you're trying to prove a point this isn't just about attacking women, you are not doing yourself any favors by obsessing over a woman.
