Ad Astra

It seems many people are having a little trouble with dialogue tags. Until I can properly write up a tutorial for Ad Astra, I'd like to direct everyone to this quick primer:

http://www.sparknotes.com/writing/style/topic_61.html

There have been some stories that have slipped through with dialogue-tag errors and those authors will be notified to go back and edit. But please, folks, for the sake of the quality of stories on the archive, try to have all of these common errors handled prior to submission. I hate having to write rejection letters, and no one likes getting them.

I understand that a lot of people who are absolutely fine storytellers otherwise have trouble with these things, in part because they just didn't know. But here's a quick primer to help you learn, and hopefully save all of us trouble down the road.

A quick way to remember it is that if a sentence has a 'said, replied, asked' then you use a comma. For instance:

"This woman running this archive is crazy," she said, shaking her head.

If it doesn't have a 'said, replied, asked' then you use a period. For instance:

"This woman running this archive is crazy." She shook her head.

THIS is incorrect:

"This woman running this archive is crazy," she shook her head.

Here's another one with common errors and the correct way to do it.

AND! I finally broke down and did it myself. Here's The Journey, Ad Astra Style.

I'd like to thank you very much for the Meta category. This is making things SO much easier when it comes to archiving all of my background information! There will be more to come over the next several days, as I find time to prepare it all. :)

Hey, have fun with it! You're very welcome.

Looks like a good site. I may join and post some of my past stories to the site. (That is; after I have gone over them and changed any spelling or grammatical errors that may need fixing.)

"Dank you! I be dumb and stuff so hadda ask such an easy kestion." (begins twitching involuntarily an drooling) "I tink ah goddit now...." (wanders off spastically)

Saturday News!

In the New Category...

...are some pretty awesome essays and the resurrected column The Journey. So go have a looksie!

Just a Few Days Left!
Come Wednesday, Nerys's 'It Must Be Love' challenge comes to a close and a new challenge goes up. Terilynn will then act as judge to the entries and select a winner from that lot, who will get a cute little trophy to go with their story and the pride that they won.

Speaking of the next challenge...
As stated back Wednesday, we're currently working on our feedback quality over feedback quantity. As I said then, one review with one hundred words will be worth more than say, ten reviews with ten words. How I'm calculating this is by this scale:

0 - 100 words - +0 points
101 - 200 words - +10 points
201 - 300 - +20 points

And so forth. So, on top of your actual review word count, you also can win bonus points by going in depth. The winner come Wednesday gets to name the featured story for their Sunday as well as the next challenge. Currently, Nerys and Rob are literally neck and neck with only two or three words separating them, but anyone can still take this game. Pick a story you really enjoy and tell the author what you loved about it, what it made you think, feel, etc. Or, conversely, feel free to open a dialogue with them about their characterization choices, ask them how they came to the conclusions they did, or otherwise. The whole idea is to foster good reading and writing practices both, and keep us feeling like a community.

Have a great weekend!

Challenge

Two days left! Well, one and a half. Come midnight Wednesday (morning), it comes to an end. Currently, in the running for who gets to name the next challenge, Nerys and Rob are still neck and neck with 2550 and 2577 points respectively. However, it's not too late for a dark horse to come running in from behind, so don't give up yet!

As for the current challenge, Terilynn gets to judge on Wednesday, so keep an eye out for our winner!

Chapter Sizes
Apparently, there is a limit (not by eFiction but by the database itself) on chapter sizes. It looks like it hovers somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 words; I'm not sure exactly where it falls, but if you plan on uploading massive chapters, make sure to check it's all there. If it isn't, you'll probably have to break it up.

Have a great week!

This Week's Challenge

So, our weekly challenge comes to an end. And our winner is RobScorpio, with a whopping 3384 points! Nerys certainly gave him one heck of a run for his money with a final tally of 3035. Some really terrific work this week by all parties involved! Stay tuned to see what Rob's challenge will be.

Next up...
As soon as we can pull the beautiful Terilynn away from admiring her new pair of Bootz, she'll let me know who wins the 'It Must Be Love!' challenge. And then I'll announce it and hand out the trophy.

Our next challenge!
Our next challenge will focus on giving some love to the Expanded Universes. See, we're really lucky here on Ad Astra because, unlike those poor folks of Fanfiction.net, we have a whole group of people here who love to come up with new ships and crews and stories and can actually not hide in some bland 'Other' section. So, for the next week (perhaps also the week after), only reviews of Expanded Universe stories will be counted up for the winner of the challenge next Wednesday. (That doesn't mean to not review other stories!) Bonus points like before still awarded for in-depth reviews. Go give a new crew and ship a chance to win your hearts!

Finally...
Michael D. Garcia (mdgarcia), former admin of Hope Station, is now an admin here with me. So, if you need any help, you have two people you can contact instead of one, and somewhere between the two of us, we might be able to pull even more off!

Have a good day!

http://adastra.shadowknightonline.com/admin.php?action=news&delete=24A Logical Winner!

According to our be-booted judge Terilynn, the winner of the 'It Must Be Love' challenge is Alara Rogers, with her Enterprise AU The Logical Think To Do. As Terilynn said, "I too wish that this is how it had really gone in the show. But it was ultimately Alara's ability to write the Vulcan's logical dialogue that I enjoyed so much."

Congratulations, Alara!

But everyone will get their chance for a trophy like the one now gracing Alara's story block. RobScorpio has issued the next challenge, which is up on the current Challenges page. To view the participants in the last challenge, here's where you can do that. The current challenge will end in two weeks, and is wide open for almost any interpretation.

Have a rockin' Wednesday!

The news from mdgarcia...

New URL, Site Support, RSS, and a Hello

As my first official new post as an administrator here at Ad Astra, I wanted to let you know that we have new URLs that point to this archive. From now on, you can use the following links to get here:

http://www.adastrafanfic.com
http://www.adastrafanfic.net
http://www.adastrafanfic.org

Site Support
No site is perfect. Every site will eventually have problems, and sometimes it'll happen right in the middle of submitting a new story or chapter. It's frustrating and we understand. To that end, we've set up a support email address for you to use should you run into any problems: support .at. adastrafanfic .dot. com. Any/all emails sent to that address will open a ticket and you should get a response from the system with a ticket number for tracking purposes. Alternatively, you can visit http://support.adastrafanfic.com and open a request for help from there. We'll get to you as soon as we can.

RSS Feed
For those of you unaware, we have an RSS feed for new stories and chapters available here at Ad Astra. Use the following link for our RSS feed to see the most recent updates to our site:

http://feeds.adastrafanfic.com/aamostrecent

Pop that URL into Firefox, Google Reader or your favorite RSS feed reader to stay current with our authors' latest offerings. It should be compatible with all RSS readers (Atom included).

Hello
As Steff mentioned, I was the former site administrator for the HopeStation.net Fiction Repository. I did not actually do much more than post over there, as the original admins disappeared on me for some reason. Anyway, I'm glad to take a more active role in Ad Astra and bringing my experience in the more technical aspects of this type of archive to assisting her and all of our authors in making this the best Trek Fanfic archive on the Internet. I look forward to interacting with all of you in the near future, and reading your submissions in the coming days, weeks, and months.

It's not going to make a difference whether you use the old or the new. It's the same site. This is just a simple DNS mask.

OK, good...that's what I was hoping. I really didn't want to have to go back and change all of my links here and over at STEU! ;)

Nope! I still use the original link too; I don't know if the mask will recognize the shiny new favicon.
