Ad Astra

This is the news on what happened from Mike:

Yes, the site was down for a few hours this morning. Looks like the SQL server ran away with the machine and locked it up at around 6:30am PDT.

I've hard-rebooted it and ran diagnostics. Doesn't look like we suffered any data loss.

Report any problems to support.adastrafanfic.com

Thanks,

MDg

A Hunting We Will Go, A Hunting We Will Go, Hey ho, A Hunting We Will Go!

In other words a new review hunt and a big word up to our last review hunt winner ... drum roll please ... [a drum rolls by

can't get the staff!] Gibraltar wins with over 900 points closely followed by Nerys with others in the hunt too. So well done Gibraltar! Get in touch to name a new challenge and have a story featured.

The new review hunt theme will this time round reward the enterprising crossing over voyagers out there - i.e. the smaller categories with stories - the Voyager and Enterprise and Crossover sections. Review from within these categories you get an extra ten points atop the words count, atop the extra points for the lengthier reviews.

Also the Bad Penny Challenge is now being voted on! So vote for your fave story >>>>HERE<<<<

Interesting site - found it a bit hard to navigate when it comes to original series, but pretty cool nonetheless.

navigate by author-much easier. Or by category.:techman:

and votes for the Ad Astra contest would be nice.

If you are going to read PSGARACK's entry you need to find it on the archive-this link is blank for him, although the other 3 links work. Not sure why.

Further news to impart. Our review hunt winner Gibraltar has issued his challenge. It is:

No one wins all the time. How an individual or crew handles losing a fight or being thwarted by an enemy or situation can tell as much (if not more) about their moral fiber than how they handle victory. Show us a situation where your characters had to absorb such a defeat. How did they cope?

Thanks for the heads up Mistral. Link fixed now.

Glad you liked tenmei - the confusion over the TOS category may be to do with the fact there are a few twist stories within that category and the fact that there is also a second category for stories set in the new movie timeline so perhaps the AOS category is confusing matters. But hey keep browsing. It's a great place to catch up and review lots of the stories that are to be found here and many others besides.

Oh, yes, I have to say it's a good website - and now I think I've got to grips with the search engine, I'm digging up some really good stories.

By the by, I think I meant your Expanded Universe category when I said original series (I meant fan-series a la Gibraltar and Seleya).

Ah yes, that makes more sense. Well by virtue of the nature of the Expanded Universe there's a huge number of stories, one offs and series. Not sure how else it might be better organised but any thoughts, feel free to suggest in a PM here or over on the Ad Astra forum suggestions.

P.S. Enjoy the Gibraltar stories you're currently reading - you are in for a treat.

Heads up, anyone having problems accessing the site? I'm thinking it might be down, but wanted to see if the problem is on my end.

Anyone?

Thankfully, it seems that Mike has again saved our butts. A big thank you to him. This is what he said about it all:

The server crashed again as MySQL ran away with it. I had to do a hard reboot to get it back up again.

This all happened last night, right before I went to sleep. Sorry I didn't get a chance to post this until this morning.

Wednesday News.

Calling Time ...
on a new challenge, a new winner, and a new vote, and a new review hunt.

The winner of the latest review hunt was kes7 with over a 1000 points earned. As a prize, the fab story Tesseract is our featured story for the fortnight. On top of which kes7 has thrown down a new challenge.

"Temporal Mechanics"

Send your favourite character or characters to another era (or yesterday, or three hours from now) and show us how they handle it. No real restrictions here, just so long as someone is travelling through time.

And on top of that, the last challenge produced some great entries and the voting is now open on that >>>>HERE<<<<

Our new review hunt works as per usual but with bonus points for Captain's Honour. Any stories reviewed featuring the character tag for one of our canon captains get an extra ten points. So once again, our much loved captains will be in the race and saving the universe, Kirk TOS and Kirk AOS, Picard, Sisko and Janeway. Oops Pike too!

OK, when will you allow an older story to be submitted? 'Cause I don't have any time stories in the works and I don't want to quit out on what I am hacking away at. Plus I have a couple already done that involve Time Travel. Also, word limit? Y or N?

Generally after a week if there aren't too many entries made we'll open it up. I normally post that announcement over on Ad Astra but I can do so here too if that suits.

No word limits. Ever.

Another "is it down?" check -- I've been having connection issues for a week, but right now I seem to be able to get everywhere BUT Ad Astra, so I'm wondering if it's actually down.

Thanks for the confirmation, Gibraltar. My connection has been so unreliable this week it was impossible for me to be sure.
