Look, Mom, it's the official Ad Astra post!

Ad Astra, for those of you who don't know yet, is the quality-controlled Trekfic archive meant to take the place of the lost Hope Station and carry on its spirit, albeit in a strictly Trekkish sense. The biggest point of the community, aside giving people a place to archive their own works and attract new readers, is to promote community interaction, good feedback and an atmosphere where authors and readers both come together to sustain and inspire each other.

Some of the benefits include the fact that it is quality controlled -- this isn't Fanfiction.net where anyone can post any old junk they threw together without any effort or merit. All authors submitting the first time have to show a strong grasp of grammar, spelling and punctuation at a minimum. We don't censor content based on personal views, just the mechanics of language. We encourage readers to give constructive criticism, and there's no flaming or ignorance allowed.

Another benefit is that readers/reviewers get rewarded, too; by spending time giving feedback to other authors, reviewers get to pick featured stories, name challenges and judge challenges.

So, for those who want to submit to an archive where you'll be surrounded by other proficient writers, Ad Astra is the place for you. The more effort you put forth, the more you'll get back -- excellence is cherished here.

Latest News: One week left in Nerys Ghemor's "It Must Be Love!" challenge! Entry has been opened up to past works as well as new ones to widen the participation in this challenge. Come midnight, the judge for the challenge will be calculated on the number of reviews that person submitted in the one week timeframe; the highest reviewer for this week, last Wednesday to this Wednesday, will get to name the challenge winner on the 25th as well as the featured story for Sunday the 22nd.

Coming Soon: As many people on Ad Astra are world-builders who create new visions of culture of the Federation, as well as new ships and crews, a Meta category will be added for all of this background information. Essays about fandom, fan-created worlds, commentary on the state of Trek creativity will be welcomed, as well as background threads for storylines in progress. So if you've been wanting to post that, "Capitalism or Communism?" essay about the Federation, you can do so! This will likely be added tomorrow.

Sounds cool! I haven't written much but it sounds like a good community idea. I'll dig out my best story as a way of presenting my credentials :)

Maybe it'll get me writing more...

::grins:: Bring it! The more of us, the merrier!

Sounds enticing, and looks even more so. If you think my story is up to the site's standards, I'd love to put it on there!

Our Winner!
Well, it was a close race this week. Both Terilynn and Mistral each submitted 16 reviews for this week. With this tie, I had to default to my second method of determination -- number of words. So, without further ado, Terilynn is this week's winner with 336 words over sixteen reviews!

So, Terry, give me a shout via e-mail or on any forum and tell me what story you want featured Sunday, and warm up your robes so you can judge the challenge come next Wednesday!

Speaking of the Challenge...
You have one week to submit stories to Nerys's "It Must Be Love!" challenge. To inspire more participation, it's now been opened so old stories can be entered as well. It can be romantic love, family love, friendship love, you name it.

And this week on Ad Astra...
...we're looking at the beginning of a new category, which I shall reveal here in the next news post.

Finally...
To change things up this week, since we've had such an awesome response on number of reviews, now we're going to work on upping the depth! So, this week coming, the person who submits the most WORDS in reviews will get to name the challenge starting next Wednesday and the featured story for their Sunday. So, one review with thirty words will be worth more than thirty reviews with one word. Don't be afraid to give some real in-depth feedback; how things made you felt, what you liked or didn't, what really struck you about a tale or a writer's style.

Most of all, have fun!

Nice new challenge idea! And I am so glad to see Ad Astra being advertised here--you've done wonderful work and it's been a pleasure to see it come together. :)

::beams:: Hey, you've been incredible over there too. You were the first person I thought of when it came to having a meta category -- your background thread for Sigils deserves to have a home alongside the stories to go with. Plus, it allows people with essays or even just fun facts to post non-fiction stuff.

I really appreciate that. :) I've got a lot of stuff housed over STEU--but the essay-type stuff I've written can't be directly backed up over there. Giving it another home will be wonderful. :)

I'll be adding it in the next news post. Also trying to come up with a FAQ for folks who might be having trouble navigating the site.

Here, SL, I'll write the faq for you.

STEP ONE: Click on the link you want.

There you go, all done! Seriously, Ad Astra is a simple, easy to use site with a number of highly active users. The feedback is interesting(well, except my 3-5 word comments!):) and usually gentle enough to avoid hurt feelings(that, or I'm a better writer than I think;)). I highly suggest any and all wanting a fair read of their work to give it a try!

LOL! It is relatively easy, but eFiction itself can be complicated. For instance, do people know that they can set the reading order for stories in a series, and that by clicking on 'Series', readers can go and see the stories in the order they were met to be read? But by reading under the main categories, of course, it's alphabetical or update order or any number of others.

Plus, there's a bit of HTML involved and that, too.

And if you don't want to do HTML, there's the matter of switching on the WYSIWYG editor...VERY helpful trick, that.

New Category
Ad Astra is adding a new category! This category is for the meta-commentary on the Trek creative front. So, if you have an essay about Trek, or background information for your own original crews and series, this is the place for it! If you want to post a dissertation about whether the Federation is socialist, communist or capitalist, you can do it. If you want to post writing guides, language guides or whatever guides, you can. All I ask is that it's somehow related to the Star Trek fic-scene.

And just to say it -- To All My Members of Ad Astra...
You people are made of so much win. In the last twenty-four hours or so, there have been 1,301 words submitted in reviews. Do you know how awesome you are? You're awesome. I'm absurdly proud to have such a fine group of writers and readers on the site.

I feel all warm inside! Though deserve no credit for the last twenty-four hours. Will get get to it though.

I was hesitant going there, because I am so intrenched over here. But it is actually a cool spot to read stories. I accidentally read a "SLASH" story and had no idea what it was, at first (didn't see the SLASH rating)...but, hey, it was interesting and the person really had the characters down. Not my cup of tea, but as long as the characters are believable, then its okay. I'll just be sure to read the warning labels next time...

LOL! That's why we have the warnings/genre for 'em. Slash gets a very bad rap because there's so much of it out there that's horribly written and out-of-character, but in itself it's not a bad thing -- one would hope that by the 23rd or 24th century, we've at least learned to really tolerate GLBT lifestyles, if not outright accept them as being a part of the fabric of culture. Certainly, I'd like to think we'd be well-beyond hurting people over it.

I have a 'gay' character (Sulu, how original) so yes, I agree. And since my Sulu takes place in a more contemporary time (2050) the attitudes are more flavored from our time...

I have seen the over-the-top Slash you refer too. But, from the one I read, its clear an effort is being taken to make sure real whacko stuff isn't posted..at least as far as I can tell..

Nah, I haven't seen any whacko stuff either, here. Some that toe the line of believability a bit, but nothing insane. I'm sincerely hoping that when the time comes, I'll be able to come up with a TOS that allows for IDIC but still discourages some elements (whom have names) from being there.
