Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

Yes he should be in it and not playing any version of himself except the real Kirk. Guinan made it clear that even though she was on the Enterprise, her "echo" was still in the Nexus..well it could easily be done with his "echo" is what exited the Nexus and got killed in Generations and his real self is still in there to come out. Shatner IS Star Trek. When you mention it to people he is the first one they think of, him and Spock. Many years ago a fan wrote a story, a great way to bring him back..that his bit in Generations was a holodeck adventure for him since he was bored and retired.

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

*gets ready to be stoned alive by Shatman's fans*

My answer is NO. Only in the highly unlikely case they could come up with an uber believable story which could manage to fit both Nu!Kirk and Prime Kirk without having one overshadowing the other, then no, I don't want Shatner to spoil the perfect image I have of him in ST:Generations as a man who has very much settled down to enjoy the peaceful live he deserves.

I'm totally against bringing Shatner's back just for the sake of having another member of TOS original cast backing up the franchise. Another reason why I wouldn't want Shatner in the movie is because I feel that this movie introduced Chris Pine as the new Captain Kirk and the next one will be crucial to establish him as such. I think that aving the old one around during this process would be too dangerous, you all know what they say about having two divas on stage...:p

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

Unless Shatner's in it. It's not officially Star Trek.
Pay the guy his buckets of money - and bloody CAST him!

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

I love the Shat, but I just don't see it.

Unless he comes back as, "Tiberius," the Mirror Universe Kirk.

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

In this new alternate timeline, perhaps Kirk won't be killed after being coaxed from the nexus, so he could easily be a Kirk from the future (perhaps finally the chief of Starfleet in his old age) - come to warn himself about a particular situation, regarding the destruction of the federation or something sufficiently epic enough to force him back in time...

Or he might merely pop in to tell his younger self, if ever a man named Picard comes to him for help - he should smack him one, riiiight in the kisser.

He could but I'm not sure how smart it would be. If they want these films (and the cast) to suceed long-term I'm not sure how clever it would be to constantly remind folk that what we're watching isn't the 'real' Star Trek.

I like that.

They should save that for the Holiday Special on TV.

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

No way. Shatner is a caricature of himself these days. He's way too old (and bloated) to make such a "return" anything more than some fanboy's wet dream.

The torch has been passed to a new generation of Trek actors! Of course, I hope Prime Spock makes a reappearance in the next film - although I'd prefer it he didn't factor into the plot. Nimoy still pulls it off. Shatner doesn't.

As much as I cringe at the thought of old, bloated Shatner portraying Kirk again, it occurred to me that maybe Kirk won't "die" on the Enterprise B in this new continuity. Therefore, a Kirk from THIS future would presumably be alive, kicking, retired and living the good life somewhere around the end of the 23rd century.
But they really shouldn't do it.

I have no problem with an expression of opinons that Shatner is not wanted in the next movie...OK and fine...but I have a major problem with you guys saying he's bloated and old and over the hill etc.
Have some respect!
He is old for god sakes...I'd like to see what you look like when you're in your late 70's... for fuck sakes he's almost 80.. you think you'll look anything like to do now???

And for all of you that are "cringing" at the thought of "old bloated" Kirk playing...uh...yeah the role he benchmarked...again you need to have just a little -- just a touch of respec..... for without him (yes yes and many others) there would be no Star Trek as we know it....no matter which Trek is your favorite.

You know, on second thought-maybe he should be in it. But, it's got to be done right----and that doesn't mean techno babble excuses---it means emotionally, effectively--funny---exciting---in a good way, bring him back.

I mean this is science fiction.

Personally, I would say to Shat--if I was JJ--"start growing your beard now." I would have Kirk's return involve a roving band of space pirates and a grizzled, bearded captain Kirk---pierced and double ring-eared and tongued- Kirk appears mysteriously--- from deep space on some rough and tumble hewn ship marred by carbon scoring and duct tape patchwork--just appears ---almost from nothing --and don't bother to explain it.

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

I also don't understand why people have such a foul mouth about Shatner... what in the world do they expect? I think he's super for his age. Still so funny and outrageous, sharper than men one quarter his age, and working twice as hard as they do, too. I agree that he really is under-appreciated. The worst part is, the type of person who says this kind of thing is probably a major small-minded, under-achiever, not fit to clean his boots.

Thankfully, for every dickhead in this fanbase, there are five more who are really quite special. :)

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

Given his remarkable work on 'boston legal', Shatner is still in his prime. Love to see him in the next movie, and love to see him with Spock on the porch smoking a cigar.

Sorry wrong franchise!

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

The only plausible way to bring him in is through time travel but we had that in the current film...we don't need it in the sequel.

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

TPaul,
I like your thinking and your quick combacks. I agree William Shatner, should come back, and your right, why not Time Travel? Isn't this part of so many Sci-Fi program, and The Star Trek Series was not immune to it. You got my vote. Silvana

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

I remember having a mental idea that the Nexus was actually travelling backwards through time and the reason it ended up in the way of the Enterprise B was because Soran had blown up the star in the future.

Because Soran didn't blow up the star, the trajectory of the Nexus was never altered, so it never ended up near the Enterprise B and thus Kirk stayed alive.

Re: Should Shatner return in a sequel?

No..

Why are so many people intent on revisiting old storylines (Khan for example) or to include original actors?

Trek did a fantastic reboot so let them tell their own stories and use their own actors.. the cast was/is fantastic.

Let them find their own way and maybe, with a bit of luck, they'll create their own iconic villains, heroes and stories.
