Not everyone who came out of the theatre was particularly satisfied with the last film, and won't be very interested in another offering of more of the same. And considering the budget that was just as bloated and misshapen as the JJprise, that astounding box office take only managed for this thing to break even; it was nice for Paramount prestige-wise, but it didn't turn a big profit.

Long story short, if this next one "underperforms", it may very well be the last chapter in this incarnation of the franchise.

Im sure you polled everyone, just to see how dissatisfied they were with the film. This film could have put up Avatar like numbers, and you would somehow make it seem like it was a failure.

If they'd put together a coherent plot, it might very well have put up Avatar-type numbers. As it was, it only ranked as a typical summer blockbuster. And has about as much staying power.

That's your mainstream success. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Really, it's a great success. You can't rationalize that away no matter how hard you try.

A big success.

Far, far more popular and a greater success than any previous Star Trek film.

And yep, some day when this version flags in popularity another "wunderkind" will come along and reboot Star Trek again.

You know what won't happen?

The studio will never back up to recreate the older version of Trek that the complainers prefer. It's dead, ended forever. You'll see it again when a waltz is number one on Billboard's Top 100 hits.

So, really, arguments about how the bridge fits in that dome are passe; yesterday's trivia.

According to? Show us Paramount's accounting information. Interestingly enough, PowderedToast posted on his site's comment blog that Paramount were apparently turning a profit just a few weeks after the film came out, and continued to do so with how well it did in blu-ray/dvd.

He can't, because he's talking through his hat. Fans can be very inventive and selective about the misinformation and rumor that they use as bases for their, uh, financial speculations. As is so often the case, he's wrong here.

Picking up a back-of-the-envelope formula from a fan magazine years ago and applying it uncritically and in a vacuum of actual information yields no conclusions worthy of consideration. That's what you've done here, and your conclusions are without value.

In fact, the people actually concerned - the studio and investors - know very well how successful this film has been for them and that is why Star Trek will now continue in this vein with the current writers, producers and cast at the helm. Your uninformed rationalizations look pretty foolish in light of that simple fact.
