"There were a couple of things we did by mistake. Like there was a roll of duct tape on the counter and we had to either cop to it or remove it digitally. I think we spent $10 million removing duct tape."

- Coming Soon interview here

I saw a picture of that roll of duct tape on ONTD Star Trek. I think I have it saved on a computer somewhere.
It was commented on here, back when the trailer first came out. I'm sure there's a picture around.

That would have been cool if they left it in instead of spent millions of dollars to remove it.
I suspect that the $10 million figure was a joke on J.J.'s part -- just an arbitrary large-ish number picked out of the air on the spur of the moment, and that the actual figure was much lower.

That wasn't duct tape.

It was a newly developed instrument being added to all new Starfleet vessels.

JJ blew an excellent opportunity to show what it is and how it works in the sequel. :D

OMG that is so funny!
M, i'm sure you're right...it was just a number he threw up in the air.
But it's true, they coulda left it in. Who doesn't love duct tape?

I also did not notice it in the trailer. I probably would have never noticed it even if they left it in the film.

I do like the idea of just leaving it in and trying to come up with a "real" purpose for it.

No, they couldn't have left it in. The error isn't seeing duct tape, it's seeing on the bridge and not in engineering where it belongs!
