ABC Unveils Reality-Heavy Summer Lineup

Dusty Ayres

Commodore
ABC will unspool eight reality series this summer: returning shows Wipeout and The Bachelorette and Bachelor Pad, joined by five new entries, including the weight-loss spinoff of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, the Jerry Bruckheimer- and Bertram Van Munster-produced Take the Money and Run, originally slated for an April launch, and Mark Burnett's Expedition Impossible. Scripted series are represented by two shows, both internationally produced: returning Canadian import Rookie Blue and the new Canadian/U.K. co-production The Hot Zone (formerly Combat Hospital). The ABC-developed thriller Missing, originally targeted for summer, was pushed to early fall around the time Ashley Judd signed on for the lead in February.

ABC Unveils Reality-Heavy Summer Lineup

Boy, I just LOVE OTA, basic cable, network television, don't you?

This isn't really news, is it?

Networks often switch to reality tv durin' the summer, since fewer folks are at home to watch, and new shows start rollin' out in late August/September.

I like that the networks focus on reality shows in the summer - it's just the perfect time for it. You don't really feel like staying inside and watching serious dramas, it's more a time for light-hearted shows that require no long term commitment from the viewer. Of those listed here, however, only one of them sounds appealing to me. Expedition Impossible has been described as a cross between The Amazing Race and an Indiana Jones style adventure - sounds like it deserves at least a first look from me.

They've certainly guaranteed that if I happen to stay inside, I won't be watching anything on ABC.

Of course there's a lot of reality TV, it's the summer. That's how things have worked since 2000.

including the weight-loss spinoff of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Ummm... Wouldn't that be a spinoff of Extreme Makeover, and not the home edition?

Nah, that one was just people who needed plastic surgery. They didn't do weightloss on that show, because it wasn't the 'In' thing.

But it's not the spinoff of the spinoff unless they are making the home owners lose weight on the side.

The homeowners have six days to lose 200 pounds each. If they can't do it, they face the execution squad on Wipeout: Extreme Edition! :rommie:

Oh well,I'll just have to get a job, and in the meantime, I can surf my life away like I'm just doing now.
