Abandoned Lt. Leslie Fan Fic

A comment from T'Girl in the TOS crew thread made me remember this attempt at some TOS fan fiction I wrote in the late 90s/early 2000s. My basic idea was to try & weave as many of Eddie Paskey's TOS appearances as I could into a coherent story. I didn't get very far before I abandoned it as kind of a dippy idea, but I thought some folks here might get a kick out of it. Here it is:

USS Enterprise Lieutenant Ryan Leslie slammed down on the truck’s accelerator. The bulky vehicle lunged forward with an ugly squeal that turned into a scream as it rammed into Edith Keeler, killing her instantly.

“Mission accomplished,” thought Leslie as he stopped the truck and opened the cab door. Although Leslie had absolutely no doubt that the woman was dead, he made a big show of coming around to check the body, being careful to keep his head down all the while. In his peripheral vision, Leslie saw two men in a tight clench. The first one spoke in an anguished whisper, in a voice Leslie knew all too well, “You deliberately stopped me, Jim. I could have saved her! Do you know what you just did?” The second man didn’t respond to the first. He merely stumbled over a few feet and leaned against the wall, deflated. It was the third man who responded, calmly but coldly, “He knows, Doctor. He knows.”

Although he knew all three of the men, Leslie kept his face down and his mouth shut. It wouldn't do to be identified now, he thought, not after all this time. No, it wouldn't do at all.

Two weeks earlier and more than 300 years later, Lieutenant Ryan Leslie strolled down the corridor of the Enterprise without a care in the world.

And no, I have no idea why Lt. Leslie was intentionally running over Edith Keeler, other than that Eddie Paskey happened to be driving the truck in "City on the Edge of Forever." I didn't outline or plot anything out in advance and was just making it up as I went (Not a great way to start a writing project that you intend to finish).

I think I was leaning towards Lt. Leslie being some sort of secret evil mastermind, and I'd end the story with him faking his own death in "Obsession," as that episode infamously shows Leslie getting killed by the cloud creature and walking down a corridor later. I'd also written the closing line, "And if Kirk ever got too suspicious, Leslie could always fake his own death."

Like I said, goofy idea, but I thought you folks might get some entertainment out of it. :)

Oh, wait. I just found a few rough story notes showing what I was thinking at the time. Here they are:

Lt. Leslie – recruited by Khan during Space Seed – Leslie – genetically enhanced? He becomes a “sleeper agent” for Khan, secretly sabotaging the Enterprise’s missions. He runs over Edith Keeler in a truck and works with the Nazi movement on Ekos (Leslie sympathizes with their goals). He fakes his own death while fighting the cloud creature in “Obsession.”

And here's another few sentences, obviously for the ending, with the evil Lt. Leslie gets away following his "death":

He hadn’t worked as a technician in sickbay long, but it was long enough to pick up a few tricks. When McCoy stepped out to make his report, Leslie would switch his red shirt for another color and slip away. With luck, no one would notice him strolling down the hall. Leslie was quite skilled at fading into the background when necessary.

I am SO embarassed... :rolleyes::lol:

It can be quite fun (as well as embarrassing) to look over one's earlier work. As a basic outline though, I don't think there's anything wrong there.

Actually, the notion of Lesley being a literal background extra to get away with his dastardly deeds is one that really tickles me!

Maybe Leslie is really a DTI agent sent to make absolutely sure that history runs the way it's supposed to. Such agents would have to be experts at getting the job done efficiently and making a quick escape. :)

That's a much better idea than what I had. :)

You're too kind, folks. Thanks.

I go back & forth on whether it's a really cute idea or whether it's a hopelessly fanboyish idea. I'd suppose I'd be up for doing more with it if I could figure out a way to make it work as a story without having to know all about TOS episode trivia & the most regular background player first.

Leslie is one of the Preservers sent to oversee Kirk, who they got promoted to Captain of a starship.

Owing to the butterfly effect of Kirk and Spock traveling to the past, the original driver who would have run down Edith was either to soon or too late. McCoy never had to save her, Kirk never had to prevent the saving.

Edith just walked across the street.

Leslie ended up being the one who traveled back in time to preform that gruesome task of running the poor woman down in a stolen truck.

In this scenario, Leslie was one of the security guards that beamed down. Kirk told the landing party that each of them would have to go through the Guardian if Kirk and Spock didn't return. Leslie and Uhura went through together and independently figured out what had to be done, similar to how Spock figured it out.

:)

So where was Uhura, then - riding shotgun in the truck? :wtf:

I've long had a fanfic idea percolating... what if, in the alternate history, by the 23rd-century there was a Nazi-like equivalent to Starfleet and they had to go back in time to make sure Edith lived so their history could be preserved? To them, her survival would be the way history is supposed to go.

Not bad. :techman:
