a video of why the film sucked

Yeah, the supernova was a big eye-roller. I just imagine that there was something freaky going on with it that was conveyed to Kirk via mind-meld, but we didn't get to see.

As to the actual scene. Maybe what went over the cliff was a mockup or CGI, not the actual car. We can only hope.
Since the Corvette scenes were filmed near Bakersfield, California, and the real, working quarry (used for modeling the CGI one seen in the movie) is located 3,000 miles away in Vermont, I think it's a pretty safe assumption that no real, live Corvettes were harmed during the filming of this movie. The tipping of the car you saw as Young Jim Kirk jumped free was almost certainly done in the effects studio and, as you'll recall, you never actually saw the car hit bottom - you only heard the sound of the impact.

That's good to hear. My older brother had a white one that was slightly newer. I don't think he's seen the movie. I'm sure he'd through a fit at that scene. Thank God for CGI. I wish that "Walker, Texas Ranger" had used CGI. In one episode they destroyed a car identical to mine. And they filmed the show in my hometown, Dallas.

I wish people would stop praising that petty jerk RLM as some kind of genius. He's made some insightful points about Star Wars, but his obnoxious nitpicking over "Star Trek: First Contact" is pathetic. This guy is nitpicking too, but he's not nearly as childish as RLM about it, who says shit like "this is the worst fucking movie of all time" talking about "Star Trek: First Contact". What a douche. Most of the things this guy is criticizing didn't bother me as much as they bother him (although I agree that Nero's motivation was so very weak) so I would say he's overreacting a bit, but I don't mind that as much as someone making hyperbolic statements about something sucking just to be smug.

WHAAAAAAA I like it when RLM makes fun of movies I don't like, but he's ALWAYS WRONG about franchises I like! WHAAAAAAAAAAA

I'm not crying. He's just being an asshole about "Star Trek: First Contact". "Star Wars Episode One" is not a movie 'I don't like'. I don't have strong feelings about it one way or another. I never really thought much about what was wrong with it.

My reaction to watching it was basically, 'meh', but when I saw RLM's review of it, I thought he made some very intelligent observations. His criticism of "Star Trek: First Contact" on the other hand, was just petty. If he'd made valid criticisms of it, I would have acknowledged that. I can admit when there's fault in things I like. Also, I said I agreed with some of the video this thread is about, even though I liked the new Star Trek movie overall and I thought a few of this guy's complaints were overreactions.

I think he was looking for a Plinkett style review. I mean, c'mon, if he can do First Contact and Avatar he can probably do the new Star Trek movie.

Ha! I can do ya one better. I destroyed MY OWN classic car! My first car was a baby blue 1967 Ford Fairlane 500XL fastback with a 390, automatic, dual exhaust, and deluxe bucket seat/console interior. I dicided to show my a$$ one day to see how fast it would go. Much to my surprise, it went pretty damn fast. I lost it at 130mph and rolled the car three times. It was a battered and broken mess when I was done. I, however, got out with only a bruised ego and a scratch on my head. A testament to the toughness of those old 60's cars. They are tanks. If I had done that in the car I drive now, I would probably be eating my lunch through a straw right now.

Well, the stepdad says on the phone that the car is an antique....

Yeah, it's the last of the 22nd century replicas! :p Stepdad needn't complain if he's already gutted much of the dash for some sort of Nokia entertainment centre.

Goodness, it's only a series of Youtube videos. Don't watch them, or hit ignore if someone on here talks about them

He's a fan (a fan's fan no less) and has found a way to elaborate his views online that's more creative and amusing than most if not all other rants I've seen by way of comparison.

My Rebuttal on the Video Fan Review:

1 a: Where do they get anitque cars in the 23rd Century?

It's not impossible to assume that technology has advanced and has come out with new technologies to re-create or preserve old antique cars about 200 years into the future. A guy actually re-created and built Noah's ark in today's modern age. I think someone could re-create and build an old classic from 200 years from now if they had a passion for doing so.

1 b: So young Kirk is a complete ass for driving his step father's car off of a cliff?

I'm sorry. But we are assuming that his step father is a nice guy. In my experience: and from listening to other people ramble on: a lot of children don't really have a good connection with their step parents and are generally considered as an outsider to them. Granted, this isn't always the case. But it is a pretty common thing that is depicted in television and films a lot.

Plus, we are sympathizing with Kirk because of the death of his real father. In other words: Kirk is rebelling against his step father because he feels that he is trying to replace his read dad.

2. Is it a problem that Nero is sitting around waiting for Spock to appear from the opening 25 years later and not warning Romulus that their planet will go supernova?

No. There was no reason that the Romulans in this Century wouldn't believe him. Besides, maybe it did happen. Maybe, Nero warned Romulus and we just didn't get to see it yet. Maybe that will be in the next movie. Who knows.

3. Is it possible to stop an exploding star or sun with a temporal rift or black hole?

Yes. It is actually possible. if Spock were to place enough of the red matter to open a large enough temporal rift or black hole close enough to the sun, then the planet of Romulus would survive. In other words: the explosion of the sun would be caught within the black hole if it was placed close enough to the sun and or if the red matter could have been implanted inside it somehow.

Sure, the system would be without a sun and Romulus would eventually die. But at least the people of Romulus would have a chance to evacuate and move to another planet.

4. Is it a problem that Spock is no longer unique like he is in the Prime Universe in the fact that he will no longer be the only one who is half Vulcan and half Human anymore?

No. I don't think this is a problem. Spock is unique in the fact that he is probably going to be one of the few (if not the only one) that is going to stay in Starfleet as per his request from his older self. Most of the other Vulcans are probably going to focus on replenishing their race and preserving their culture and way of life. So Spock is still unique in this respect within this particular universe.

5. Is it possible to enjoy both the Prime Universe and other Parallel Story Lines?

Yes. It doesn't make sense that you can't enjoy an alternate time line story. In fact, one of the favorite universes of Star Trek is the Mirror Universe. It opens our mind of what could have been if things played out differently. Let's not forget Star Trek is also about the possibilities or the exploration of not just the stars but of other parallels time lines and other wonders, too.

As for point 1 a: I want to believe that the car in the movie was actually meant to be a replica. And that the shot was done using CGI. However I would have liked to have seen a line in the credits:
"No classic cars were harmed during the production of this motion picture."
They do it for animals.
As for point 3: They might as well get out the giant vaccum cleaner from "Space Balls"
I don't think that the film sucked. It just needed some more cleaning up and polishing.

Captain Rob:

So your love for cars is a reason for not liking this scene?

Well, in the 24th Century they made a lot of advancements in science and technology. I wouldn't doubt that within the Star Trek Universe there would be a discovery of something that could create a large dimensional rift or a black hole. I mean, if you think about it. Black holes exist in real life. Who knows how big they can get outside of our realm of knowledge? I mean the red matter that creates large rifts in space and time is no more ridiculous than say a transporter or non aerodynamic space ships going at warp speeds and not killing anyone. The rift (that was supposed to have saved Romulus) is simply a MacGuffin used in the story to help move it along.

Now, I am not saying the movie doesn't have things I didn't like in it. But they are very easy to overlook in the context of how well everything else was done.

Well I didn’t think it sucked entirely doing Vulcan in was step too much!

The car was an antique just like any car from early 20th century is an antique to someone today, in the 21st century.

Yes the Black Hole to destroy the sun, and a planet needs it for nature resource for growing food trees planet, life.

I guess J.J. just wanted sheer death and destruction! Well we won’t have to wait long now, before more death and destruction! LOL

You know what Paramount should do! They should get the prints remade and have the original six-track Dolby stereo mixed created for the 70mm prints and just re-show them on the BIG SCREEN!

Personally I’d like to see the 70mm prints in 70mm house twice as large twice as bright and there is something about 70mm magnetic that just knocks my socks off!

Epsilon-9:

I actually thought that the destruction of Vulcan was brilliant. We know that Vulcans have grown close to humans. So it added a nice emotional element to the story line. Besides, it's an alternate universe where anything can happen. The planet Vulcan witin the Prime Universe still exists.

Yes the Black Hole to destroy the sun, and a planet needs it for nature resource for growing food trees planet, life.

The whole point of the Black hole was to allow Romulus (and other surrounding systems) time to evacuate and find new homes. However, Spock didn't make it in time and the Romulans on the surface of the planet died instantly if they weren't wearing a 2 billion sun block.

You can't have good conflict without action. Unless you want to do a movie like the Phone booth or something. Which really wouldn't work for a Star Trek film.

Yeah, I am glad JJ shot it on film. On a film level: The movie looks absolutely amazing.

I was just supposing that the car was a 23rd century replica. I'm a big fan of 60's and 70's musclecars and absolutely hated seeing them destroy that car. I would hope that in the 23rd century that a truly original Corvette would be in a museum and drivable. Not in some Iowa farmboy's barn where it could get scratched or damaged.

Same here; that Corvette should have been a 2010 Corvette instead. One of my pet peeves about movies in general is how they destroy classic cars in movies like these; the Dukes Of Hazard movie could have had them tool around in a 2008 Dodge Charger or Magnum, and so could have the first Fast & Furious movie. But no, they have to destroy classic cars! Destroy new ones; there should have been enough new Corvettes left after WWIII for Frank to buy and Jim to destroy.

If Kirk drove a 2010 sports car it would have been shameless product placement. I'm flashing back to Will Smith's dreadfull (circe 2007!) shoes from iRobot.

When you had the original trilogy that rarely used the lightsabers (until ROTJ), the build up to a lightsaber duel was kind of exciting. However, in the prequel trilogy, they use their lightsabers all the time like it's the most standard thing to use.

ROTJ is part of the Original Trilogy; a supposed criticism of the prequels based on their agreement with ROTJ isn't really meaningful. However, blaster deflection and use of a lightsaber against Muggles are right there in ANH. You're seeing more lightsaber use in the prequels simply because there are more Jedi. Furthermore, the Original Trilogy takes great pains to establish the lightsaber as the weapon of a Jedi knight, not "a weapon used by certain Jedi as a matter of personal preference". So this is just a typical case of a basher (RLM) finding fault where no such fault exists.

He seems to be regarded as "insightful" because of having pointed out a few things that his fans hadn't noticed on their own - like the last reel of TPM being structured exactly like the last reel of ROTJ. Big deal. I've been citing that for years.
