Today I had an interesting thought. What if we had a Trek series set in 2020?
The basic premise of it is this: First Contact between humans and Vulcans happened in 2063. However, we know there were numerous alien entities who within the Trekverse had visited Earth at an earlier point. The earliest of these known contacts was the "Sky Spirits" visiting the ancestors of Native Americans 45,000 years ago. The latest example was the Vulcans from Carbon Creek crash-landing in 1957. On some occasions humans even left Earth (the Native Americans rescued by the Preservers, the humans in the Enterprise episode North Star. So even pre-contact, Earth was kinda a leaky sieve.
Thus it would not be surprising to think during Trek's 2020 aliens are coming to Earth, and humans are leaving Earth. Maybe you could have a situation where a human stows away on an alien spaceship or otherwise ends up stranded in space, and you end up with a Fascape/Guardians of the Galaxy type situation, with one fish-out-of-water human in a cast of aliens? Maybe you could have an X-Files/MiB like series where the government investigates all of these abortive first contacts and keeps them under wraps? It seems like there's a lot of potential here.
