A TOS Episode Without Kirk?

It would be nice if they made a new TOS episode (use one of the fan sets) without the main cast - a story told from the crews point of view.

They could always put Kirk and Spock in the background walking down a corridor...

Where did you obtain this information? Nothing I've seen in decades of following TOS indicates there was an intent to have Shatner direct an episode. In addition, there's nothing to indicate season 3 was not a full order. Sure, it had only 24 episodes (as opposed to 29 in season one and 26 in season two), but that sure seems like a full US TV season to me.

Oh, was that not the case? I know it's not regarded as hugely reliable, but the claim in These Are The Voyages (I've seen it said a few other places as well, no idea if they were taking the boom at face value. Memory Alpha has it down the page here: http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/The_Joy_Machine_(outline)) that Shatner was preparing to direct the next episode when the show's final pickup wasn't taken is one of the parts of it I've not seen disputed.

I've heard that story for decades about him directing the season three episode 25 -- that never got made.

Yeah, I don't even think William Shatner had any 'Directing' ambition until AFTER Leonard Nimoy directed STIII:TSFS circa 1984 - LONG after the end of the original series run.

Shatner and Nimoy said they brought it up during the show, but it was flatly turned down. It was the 60s and actors did not direct episodes, as far as the rest of the production and the studio was concerned.

Aside from "The Slaver Weapon," the TOS episode with minimal Kirk lines was "The Tholian Web." The Captain (star) appeared in every episode of all the spinoff series as well.

Vince Edwards directed himself in seven episodes of Ben Casey starting with an episode in 1963 (the show’s third season). Michael Landon directed himself in fourteen episodes of Bonanza starting in 1968 (his first episode during the show’s ninth season). Desi Arnaz directed himself in three Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Comedy Hours from 1959-60.

Those are just three examples off the top of my head. It was not unprecedented, though Edwards is the only one of the bunch to direct as early as the third season of a series.

That said, I haven’t seen any production paperwork indicating Shatner did any prep work or was booked to direct an episode. I think this rumor originates from the book Star Trek Lives! (as I recall, one or more of the authors were on set during the filming of “Turnabout Intruder”).

EDIT: I checked, and Cushman doesn’t do any new reporting on this. He just quotes from Star Trek Lives!, which has Roddenberry telling Shatner, allegedly booked to direct episode 26 of the season, that NBC won’t be picking up the show past their current episode (24).

Shatner was directing TJ Hooker eps in 1983. When was Nimoy slated to direct TSFS?

Who spent more time on their hairdo? Shatner, Zmed or Locklear?

There was a episode of DS9 where Sisko didn't appear (forget the title).

I thought it was interesting that not only didn't Sisko appear, but there were no Human characters in the episode.

Little Green Men, maybe? Actually maybe Sisko had a couple of lines there. Perhaps another Ferengi episode.
