A to Z Shows Promise.

Guy Gardener

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
A to Z

Saw a pre-air pilot to a new comedy, more of a 22 minute drama with comedic elements, about a relationship between two attractive somewhat quirky Americans in their late 20s being treated like a study on wildlife by a disembodied Katey Sagal. Actually her narration is mostly at the beginning and end no more intrusive than Bob Saget in How I Met Your Mother...

Speaking of How I met your Mother, the female lead is the mother form how I met your mother Cristin Milioti is the female lead.

:)

No soundstages, multicamera, huge main cast, lots of extras, someone near the top is invested in the project financially, that there is no way that they can get a suitable return on their money?

You know how sometimes it's more clever than funny, but still good?

The words "Marv Wolfman era Titans" did make me spittake, but there's an element of reality to the comedy that... It's very much like 500 Days of Summer.

"This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, this is not a love story."

Of course that's a quote from 500 Days of Summer, while A to Z seems to very much be a love story, even if it is a doomed love story.

Isn't all love doomed?

"Sigh"

I was tempted to watch the pre-air but I'll just hold on until the series starts.

Glad it shows promise, but I still think Selfie w/ Karen Gillan and John Cho will be the better show of the two.

Looking forward to both.

I agree with Guy, it is more clever than funny. Very strong HIMYM vibe here, but at least the nipple-ectomy guy from Mad Men is a better actor than Josh Radnor.

Milioti looked great in that silver dress. Easy to see why the male lead thought she was his destiny girl.

The Marv Wolfman/cosplay business was great. The hover board mystery was better. And the ghost from Being Human! She was fantastic on BH and I'm always happy to see her in anything.

Troubling thought: the ghost and the best friend (that one guy, you know, from Best Week Ever) have the potential to upstage the two leads as the best parts of the show. If this happens, we'll be left with that short-lived sitcom from several years ago that "starred" Jason Biggs and Sarah Chalke but actually STARRED Tyler Labine and Judy Greer as their respective best friends, a.k.a, the best parts of that show. This is an authentic possibility for A to Z, as well.

Barring any scheduling conflicts, this pilot has me interested enough to continue watching the series when it begins this fall.

Judy and Tyler from Madlove in retrospect reminds me of the new couple on You're the Worst, but yes that a completely succinct and accurate comparison you made.

Tyler's new show "Deadbeat" is just Tyler being Tyler.

(It's on Hulu. Hulu dropped a full season of it in one day just like Netflix does.)

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought that Mad Love should of really been about Tyler Labine's and Judy Greer's characters from the beginning.

They're chemistry was electric and I'm not sure if a show like that has ever really been done before, where the supporting cast would surprise you and actually become the focus of the show. CBS missed out on a terrific opportunity there.

Frank and Hotlips? ;)

IMDB is listing the second episode as "B is for Big Glory"

Which on one hand means that they are going to progress alpha numerically through to Z (The first episode was called A is for Acquaintances.) which is a nice niche, but it also means that they cap out at 26 episodes.

I'm also very interested in this show because of it similarities and links to HIMYM. I thought the first episode was quite good. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.

Looks like Cristin Milioti made quite an impression due to How I Met Your Mother and someone snatched her up for this. Good move. I like her too and she's the main reason I enjoyed the pilot.

How will this show play out? Will it only last one season? Or will they reboot the alphabet once they're married in season 2, then again when they have a kid in season 3?

2 seasons of 13 episodes?

Or refocus the romantic leads set in the same universe with the same background actors for a second a-z and then a third and then a fourth?

Why make an 8 year plan, when they can cancel you after 2 episodes?
