A Star Wars Fan's Reaction to Star Trek

Yeah has Lucas ever said what influenced him as a child etc...?

How could he not have been influenced by it? He had like 3 channels to choose from and apparently liked film and science fiction. I'm sure in some revisionist history he has of himself and his grandness all his ideas were purely unique. Maybe he might cite kurasawa or something but his "bloated" ego wouldn't let him cite Trek, ever.

Star Wars fans are embarrassed by the fact that the last three SW films were so dull.

Besides the VFX they really don't have any appeal...

Besides the VFX they don't really have any anything...just performers standing where they're told to stand and reciting gibberish as best they can. There's one decent performance in them.

In SW defense, if you actually read the books or study the back history of the characters; its a really rich and deep universe. Lucas just doesn't know how to direct although his ILM(which did the effects of ST11 btw) does know effects.

Forgive me for my rant, but I can't help it...

I saw Star Trek on opening night May 7th, and I really liked it, so I dragged a buddy of mine from work to see it again last week (his first time)

We had a good time, imitating Shatner while we made fun of the previews, yelling "KHAAAAN!" when the movie started..and I think that, despite what he says, he liked it...

What annoyed me is that this guy is an admitted Star Wars fan, and throughout the film he kept saying things like "That's Hoth" (for Delta Vega), or "Nimoy sounded like Yoda", or that the polarilla was a wompa (or a bandark or a chazzwozza or whatever the hell they call those creatures in Star Wars - Don't know and don't care)

"The action sequences were fast-paced, like Star Wars!" "The warp drive looks like hyperspace! "

Okay then..isn't that what all those Star Wars fans have always said made those films better than Trek? More action? More funny-looking ice monsters? More whiz-bang space battles and planets 'sploding?

So why then are they (and I'm referring to the handful that I know personally, not a blanket statement) complaining? Shouldn't that make Star Trek exactly the kind of film they would enjoy?

I don't get it..maybe I'm way off base...

To anyone who read this, I owe you two minutes of your life back :)

"That's Hoth" Because Minshara class planets certainly don't have snow, amirite?

"Nimoy sounded like Yoda" I'm sorry but Nemoy was sounding like Nemoy in star trek 20 years before Yoda in ROTJ

"polarilla is a whompa" Alien planets have... Aliens? oh noz.

"The action sequences were fast-paced, like Star Wars!" "The warp drive looks like hyperspace! " I see what u did thar. :sigh: Star Wars didn't invent the wheel, stop acting like it did. If Lucas didn't grow up watching Star Trek there would be no Star Wars.

I didn't say those things, my friend did

I agree with you, but he refuses to budge

The conditioning is strong within that one

Meh

Well, Spock and Kirk reached a depth in this one movie alone that neither of the Wars characters reached in all the six Episodes together...

Maybe I should have titled this thread "Star Trek Vs. Star Wars: Arggle-Barggle or Foofarah?"

It seems like we all know the clear winner...

Perhaps Jedism is a cult after all...

Take Jedi out of SW and you are left with nothing. Take religion out of star trek(it already is) and you are left with what we have today known as STAR TREK.

I sometimes wish lucas didn't name it Star Wars because its more like Fantasy Battles. SW is more fantasy than scifi.

ILM outdid themselves in this movie. STAR TREK11 eviscerates the prequels as far as effects are concerned(but 10 years will do that of course have to admit that).

Currently, the novel section for Star Wars at the book store is three or four times bigger than the one for Star Trek.

My husband (a Wars fan), says it's precisely because there are only six movies. There isn't enough on screen for the fans.

The strange thing is that on book shelves, the ST and SW books get along just fine. Many of their owners should learn something from them. It's fun to support one's favored team, but deriding one franchise without much experience with it, or arguing fantasy versus science when dealing with starships, viable offsprings from different species, "cracks in event horizons," etc doesn't serve either side very well.

I love Star Wars but it's just not Star Trek. I am a complete nerd, I even gamed Star Wars for a couple of years in High School right before EP1 came out(6D system).

LOL I remember the 3 channels and also the 13" B&W TV...served me well it did. So Lucas has never mentioned the words Star Trek huh....hmmmmm....I'll have to check and see how old he was when Trek premiered....

I've never understood the appeal of Star Wars. I understand I am in the minority on this issue, but I'll watch the worst Star Trek movie instead of the best Star Wars movie any day.

The means TMP verses TESB, lol.:guffaw::lol: NO CONTEST!

I love Star Trek, but I HATED & still DETEST the TMP.:scream:

If you were to show somebody both movies today that had never seen either, I can pretty much guarantee you which one they will like better.

I dunno. I used to work in Borders in the '90s (great discounts!) and just before closing time we would see smoke and fire coming out of the sci fi shelves. we're not the only ones fighting it out :p

the first half of TMP can go up against any SW movie and win. not the whole movie though ;)

either way he loses. he mentions it -- childhood influence. doesn't mention it: sour grapes and/or jealousy. not to mention plagiarism.

Yup as soon as they made that chick bald, it was all downhill from there.

Lucas was 22 when Star Trek premiered, finishing his undergrad at USC. His grad school film project THX-1138 4EB was completed in '67-'68, so maybe he ripped that off too.

When Lucas wanted to make a scifi film in the early 70s, he looked into buying the rights to Flash Gordon or Star Trek. He wasn't able to do either, so he came up with his own story. Imagine that parallel universe.

I'm a Gen1 Star Wars fanatic who was deeply disappointed in the prequels. I don't know why Lucas forgot everything that made the original films fun in the first place. Worse still, he botched the core story of the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker by failing to create any empathy for the character whatsoever. His crime wasn't being evil, it was being stupidly irritating.

Star Trek XI is far from perfect, but it at least has a visceral compelling element that is missing from Lucas' modern work. Not that Star Trek is faultless. I've found modern Trek (TNG, DS9, VOY, etc.) nearly as dull. '99 Lucas wasn't '77 Lucas, just as '87 Roddenberry wasn't '66 Roddenberry (of course '09 me isn't '77 me either). Perhaps it is simply the way of all things - fresh and new becomes popular becomes franchise becomes stale.

LOL I knew once I said I'll have to check how old Lucas was that someone would go and just do it for me....I love you guys! :adore: I don't even need google anymore...I just come here for my queries.
