a STAR TREK idea...

Any new TREK series must be radically different from the movie series so as to not steal its thunder...that must be the paramount concern. I don't bother with what any of you say on this matter. But having TREK series on TV with crews and TREK movies with crews confuses and ultimately creates the impression that the movies are just two-hour episodes of the current show for a moving going public that cant seperate the two

that isn't just my view, it is a recurring complaint from many movie reviewers...(and, for the most part, Trek movies do seem kind of cheap and are, in the cases of Nemesis-Insurrection, not even better than most of the 'so/so' episodes)

So...if TREK XI is starting a series of movies about Kirk and company, then any new TREK series must avoid that. Perhaps a TREK series that is centered around one MAJOR character...perhaps he is sent to worlds, secretly, to prepare them for First Contact...maybe he is a 'scout' for the federation and is out there....in the new frontier..competing with Klingon scouts and Romulan scouts trying to find the best 'new worlds' to explore....heck, maybe he is a ghost hunter, or a vampire hunter, or a treasure hunter (that would be cool)....but a show centered around ONE character as the main character. No crew of multi-racial humans mixing it up with Bajorans or Vulcans....none of that stuff we have seen for 40+ fricking years....

I could comment and give my opinion on your ideas, but...

I don't bother with what any of you say on this matter.

So why post here then?

I had just gotten in a verbal joust with my boss...so just chalk that one up to anger. I actually do read every post in a thread I start. Its like I have to just to see where it went..so I do apologize if it sounded bitter...no offense was meant..

Fair enough. I'm not sure that I agree that a new Star Trek series has to stay away from a multi person cast, to differentiate itself from the movies. If the movies are good in their own right, the movie goer won't complain that there's a series out there as well. And if they aren't good (which was the case with Insurrection and Nemesis imo) then whether or not there is a series as well isn't going to change that. In that case perhaps if the series is popular, it might positively effect the box office. Otoh, a bad movie might negatively effect tv viewing figures.

Anyway, that I don't think the series has to move away from the crew concept, doesn't mean that I don't think a one man show might work, although I would like to see some strong recurring characters (or 'lesser' cast members). A ghost hunter or vampire hunter don't really fit into Trek's world, but kind of scout or spy might work.

Most of the crew in space shows actually also centered around only a couple of crew members at most, with the rest having their occasional chance in the spotlight, but it was mainly Kirk-Spock-McCoy, Picard-Data (especially in the movies), Janeway-Seven-Doc, and Archer-T'Pol-Trip. DS9 might have been the exception, as it was in so many ways.

I can see what you mean. But talking with my friends and family about TREK? They just think its all the same after a while. And with TNG-DS9-VOY all taking place one after another, its almost like 21 seasons of the same show..the same formula..the same LOOK....

And my friends, not TREK fans, think the movies, by using the same uniforms the same sets as the TV show, come off as cheap. GENERATIONS, my favorite TREK movie, should have really changed uniforms and sets. The reason they didn't? Budget....

I would just like to see them do at least two movies with this new movie series before they start adding to the mountain of TV episodes. What, 600+ hours of TV TREK already? It would take something like 5 weeks to see all that, not stop, twenty four hours a day....let the demand grow naturally..and right now I see no demand out there, even on this board, for a new show..right now...

That was also the point I guess. People who didn't care for TNG were not going to tune into DS9 or VOY either I suppose. And people who did care, wanted the story to continue. That the formula grew stale was due to a lot of factors: bad writing, lack of risk taking in the production etc etc. But I don't think the fact that the shows had a crew cast was at the core of any of these problems. A lot of shows in recent years work with often very large casts and often very successfully (in terms of storytelling at least).

As far as I can judge by the trailer, the upcoming movie doesn't look cheap. I don't know what the budget is, but this concern seems to be out of the way for the near future.

Oh, I'm quite happy not seeing any new Trek on tv in the near future or perhaps in any future. There's enough other choice out there, I don't see a reason to cling to any one particular tv show. I mean, we have what we have and if we get more good Trek in the future, then 'hurray!', but if not, then so be it. But that was not what your original post was about, was it? You claimed that if there will be a new Trek series, it should not be about a crew because that would confuse the movie public, and, as explained above, I don't really see why that should be the case. You say yourself above that your friends and family thought the movies looked cheap and the reason for that was the budget, not that there was a show with a Strek Trek crew on tv at the same time.

Cheap in that you had TNG movies, Generations and FC-Nemeis and Insurrection, that were running in the same 'real time' as VOYAGER and DS9. When TNG switched over to the gray uniforms, and DS9 did too, I think it was a dreadful mistake, though I liked the uniform change personally.

But some average joe who all TREK movies are generally aimed at, going through the channels and coming across a DS9 episode with a commercial for FC is going to think "hmmmm...why should I go see that movie when its the same stuff on tv"

Then they use the same sets, the same music sometimes, and it all has SAME SAME SAME feel to it....And professional reviewers hit INSURRECTION with this very complaint. It wasn't even better than a two hour episode AND you expect people to go to a movie and pay all that money?

Actions speak louder than words...and NEMESIS/INSURRECTION were, to the general public I dare say, sad pathetic movies from a TV show (TNG) with aging actors and expanding waste lines...and they couldn't even get decent stories or intriguing ideas....TNG movies, in retrospect, IMO, did not fare well..and alot of this, IMO, has to do with a public that believed, and rightfully so, they were getting TV episodes at the movies..and having BETTER TV shows on TV, at the same time, just drove home that point..IMO..
