A Star Trek Character Study (The Captains)

The Laughing Vulcan

Admiral
Admiral
How do we fans perceive the Captains? I'm sure different folks have different perceptions

Kirk

positives

Decisive, Intuitive, something of a lone wolf. Independent of thought. Fiercely loyal.

negatives

Doesn't work well with others, a little maverick, even disliked (see Court Martial). Emotionally damaged, especially when it comes to his ship. Devoted to the Enterprise, but the ship gives him no love back, hence the brief dalliances with a whatever beauty happens to glance his way.

Picard

positives

Intelligent, eloquent, has a diversity of interests. Suited to diplomacy and inclusive of his command staff.

negatives.

Not the best tactician, prediliction for conferences in crisis situations, at first glance can seem pompous, overbearing and arrogant, a little too fond of his own voice. Can be distracted by personal issues.

Sisko

positives

Strong and decisive, stalwart

negatives

Can be intimidating, has a sore spot about ethic history and civil rights issues half a millenia old, doesn't take betrayal at all well. Has a Messiah complex.

Janeway

positives

... ... ... No. Got nothing. Oh wait, has tendency to act motherly, especially towards female strays. Bloody lucky

Negatives

Indecisive, inconsistent, shrew and harridan, emasculates her command staff, continuously makes poor decisions, is a sore loser, prone to sulk. Never listens. Out of her depth.

Archer

positives

Boy scout attitude (even if it is a little out of place at his age). Up and at 'em take on things, got the boldly going thing down pat, and out of his depth but it suits him.

negatives

Tries too hard and comes off looking fake. Issues with Vulcans affect his decision making, seems easily discouraged.

Sulu

Says 'shields' a lot. Drinks tea.

Jellico

By the book, career military, his own man, dedicated, self assured, stickler for rules, although a little unaccomodating to changes.

Harriman

Comic relief

Stiles

That swagger stick is compensating for something.

Esteban

Jovial target practice.

Every time I watch that episode (was it Balance of Teror?), I want to beat that guy Stiles up. What a moron.

The evaluations are pretty accurate, I think. Poor Janeway. I kind of dig her insanity.

I don't belive the OP was refering to Lieutenant Stiles from Balance Of Terror, rather it may be Captain Styles from Star Trek III

I like your analysis. I see Sisko as a father figure beyond his relationship with Jake, though, too. I think he sees himself as a father to the crew and later to the Bajorans.

Kirk was good because he was so loyal, he is the kind of Captain I would want, he'd risk his own career to help his friends.

Sisko was maybe like that aswell but he was much too impulsive.

Picard was probably the best by the book Captain ever, but I don't see him as loyal to his friends as I see Kirk

The rest are run of the mill captains
