Spoilers A Spoilery Image of Protostar Crew? (Possibly from S01E09 A Moral Star, Part 1)

I just stumbled upon this image of the kids in full uniform, and had to upload it to flickr to share with everyone.

I love it, they look awesome.
It's real! :D

They’ve already established on other shows that many different uniforms and combadges can and do co-exist based on rank, division, ship or station. As far as I’m concerned, give me the good old days of TNG where the Federation corridor was like a fashion week catwalk!

As cool as the First Contact uniforms were, I thought it was a shame that they pared everything down to such uniformity during the Dominion War. Thankfully, it looks like the peacetime of the early 2380s is showing us a lot more diversity of uniforms and fashion again, as seen on Lower Decks.

‪‪I can admit where I’m wrong, and ‪‪I was wrong, and you were correct. I was fooled by the limited angles, and convinced, and totally wrong.

I don't know. Janeway's uniform, like Chakotey's appears to have a larger dark area at the shoulders. It's also darker colored overall and has a red piping at the top of the shoulders. The kids may indeed be wearing cadet uniforms. *Shrug*

That all sounds right, ‪‪I would agree. Seeing Janeway adapt to match them, and her look seeming to appear like Chakotay’s uniform in the holo footage, it seems to me like they’re either the same, or some variation of the uniform, as you said, most likely cadet. The basic lines are the same, but they do seem to have less harsh angles and the kids’ uniforms have wildly varied proportions because their designs do.

TOS and TNG had tons of co-existing variant uniforms and combadges. It was only during the Dominion War that things got pared down to a lot of “sameness”, and even then they had episodes where they switched uniforms or some Admirals were seen still in the old TNG uniforms in later episodes.

Maybe this is my eyes - does anyone else see 2 different cadet uniforms? One light blue/navy and one white/grey?

It sort of does seem that way! I think it’s just one color with extreme variation from lighting effects, because as you say, it looks like a pale navy with the Protostar’s interior lighting, but at times bright white when they’re out of the ship on Tars Lamora, or in other shots with heavy lighting.

The Hageman brothers did an interview with Inverse where they discussed these uniforms a bit:

The Hagemans said:
“Since the USS Protostar is an experimental starship, we felt it gave us some freedom to create our own uniform design, as long as it fit alongside the uniforms of this era. We, [executive producer] Ben Hibon, and our design team spent a lot of time discussing the badge and uniforms. We had to balance the style of our series, while also recognizing these kids aren’t actually anywhere close to being Starfleet Officers, which is why we went for a stripped-down design.”

So a lot of us were right, the uniforms are indeed Protostar specific. ‪‪‪‪It’s pretty cool to see such a variety of SF looks across the different series.

That's cool - I wonder if the phasers are also experimental.
The uniforms don't look "stripped-down", though.

Btw, didn't Holo Janeway wear her VOY uniform in the recording with Chakotay? Why didn't she wear the PRO one back then?

The obvious answer in universe answer ‪‪I guess would be that Chakotay had her appear as she did when he was under her command on Voyager, and the out of universe/real world answer I’d think is to preserve the full reveal of the uniform.

Scene I wanna see in the next episode or whenever they get back on the ship:
Murf in the new uniform, which for him is simply a bag with the pattern on it. He's proud and happy  and moves forward... slipping out of the bag and leaving it behind :sigh: cause there's no way to attach it to his slippery body.
Cut to the actual story... then cut back to Murf in the bag, now holding the top with his mouth while proudly crawling about the ship with the bag loosely staying on! :guffaw:

We haven't seen him do anything like this yet, but perhaps he can adjust his form to imitate the uniform?
