I'm curious to see how Cawley pulls off the asylum scenes...

Several of us had to leave the set during the filming of the "Kirk gets out of the hospital" scene because James was just too intense to watch without us getting emotional enough to be heard on film as well. Still makes me cold thinking about it.

James' acting even surpasses his theater work in this one....

An excellent scene...but...

"You will STAY!" I think this is WAY over the top for Spock...

We admire, even envy Spock for not losing his cool in the face of such situations..and to snap like this is just off the mark...unless this is a road that Spock is supposed to go down in this particular story.......?

To add to what Greg said.... not only is Spock intentionally behaving out of character, but you have to see what is happening to him personally through the course of the story to GET him to this point. And the scene is the final climax of the war between Spock and McCoy: so it's basically been years in coming...

I once remember seeing a picture of Cawley on the Phase II website that showed he had lighter hair - similar to Shatner's.

Was this a test shot? I'm curious why he didn't keep it that way for the Phase II films.

We get questions fairly often about James' hair for some unfathomable reason. James' natural hair is a a sandy blond color. He has to dye it jet black for his day job. If a Phase II shoot ends up happening when James needs to have his hair dyed for his day job (which it almost always does), he ends up keeping it jet black for his role as Kirk. If the scheduling of the Phase II shoot is such that it doesn't conflict with his day job, he has been able (rarely) to have lighter hair for Kirk. (Nowadays, since everyone is pretty much used to his black hair as Kirk, there's little need to change it.)

Yep...that's the one I remember seeing. I thought at the time that he was trying to get closer to the "real Kirk" look, I didn't realize that was his natural hair color.

The dark hair gives his Kirk more of a Jack Lord vibe than Bill Shatner. So my rationalization for the whole thing is imagining that for some reason Shatner decided to leave after the third season and it was decided to just recast, and in this alternate reality, Hawaii Five-O didn't fare too well, thus Jack Lord was available, this time for much more reasonable terms than that first meeting.

Kirk had darker hair in season 3 and fully dark hair by TMP. These eps. take place in between. I don't see why this is an issue.

Excellent. If we can make Star Trek fans unsettled instead of giving them exactly what they think they should be getting, then we're doing our jobs.

I've read the source story, and Spock's behavior in this scene as shot is both illogical and inconsistent with his character, no matter what the source material says. YMMV.

I'm going to be totally contrary and say I actually liked the take on Spock in this scene. On the other hand, I wasn't so keen on McCoy.

Your mileage, undoubtedly, may vary .
