A second step into the Tardis

New season. New thread.

And as much as I enjoyed Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor, I am enjoying David Tennant's different - yet not so different - take. He seems maybe note quite as manic... but with a colder streak in him. Or at least the ability to be so.

2 x 01 - "The Christmas Invasion"

2 x 02 - "Tooth and Claw"

2 x 03 - "New Earth"

2 x 04 - "School Reunion"

2 x 05 - "The Girl In the Fireplace"

That is what I have watched this evening... and it's an awful lot to take in and comment on at once. My words aren't worth waiting for, but I will post more thoughts later. SUffice it to say there are many, many thoughts. A diffrent Doctor. Rose and Sarah Jane ... and Mme de Pompadour. Twists that make seemingly predictable stories fresh. Witty and banter and Torchwood references and Time Lords who are lonely angels walking the slow path.

Have mercy on my soul, this is GOOD!!

2 x 03 - "New Earth"
*cry* The end of the last pure Human, it's so sad. But at least we get introduced to Hane, whom I adore. And Boey finally talks. And, and, pure awesomeness. We'll see this planet again. :)

2 x 04 - "School Reunion"

LOVED this episode. Loved everything about it. The return of the famous Sarah, one of the fans' favorite companions in the classic series. This episode is directly responsible for the Sarah Jane Adventures spin-off series, and for bringing fans of the classic series into the modern one. There were a few people who insisted the shows weren't connected ... This was like Spock showing up on TNG.

Sci-Fi fans seem to be fickle, whatever the exact show is, I do recall reading the threads about the new series not being a follow up to TOS in OG, school reunion pretty much put that all to rest.

I think it was proven that Trek TOS & Trek TNG were in the same reality long before Spock put in an appearance, Sarek for example appearing in TNG before Spock, but for me it was never in question, and if there was a question Bones answered it.

^ so Bones being in the first episode was not enough for some people?

Oh, Bones was thrown in for fan-service. He had a cameo that never really impacted the story. Sarah Jane, Sarek, Spock, and Scotty, though, came back with episodes about their story.

At least, that's why I would be fickle about past characters coming back :)

you are not wrong about that, besides I always wondered how he even survived that long ( I was never any good at star dates to years). Hell I was surprised when Sarek was still alive on TNG, however that is something that was put right later on.

I truly feel that "The Girl In The Fireplace" is one of the greatest episodes of Doctor Who.

But not just that, I think it really captures what Doctor Who is all about. If someone where to ask me, "I want to see a great episode of Doctor Who, but also one that truly embodies what this show is all about" then I'd show them The Girl In The Fireplace.

Agreed. I'm surprised there are so many fans who just don't care for those "light and whimsical" kind of DW stories. To me, those are the very best ones.

Of course, one of the great things about "The Girl in the Fireplace" is that it is both light and whimsical AND dark and depressing...

And it takes place in the future, as well as the past.

^ And it has Sophia Myles. ;)

But yeah, one of the best of the new series' run, and that ending is a heart-wrencher.

Oh yeah... :D

I just finished watching "Love and Monsters". That was the 11th episode I've watched in the past 20 hours. THAT's how much I'm enjoying it!! ^_^

I don't think I can go through each episode - and I doubt you'd want me to - and offer commentary. But it's been a wonderful ride so far. My favorite episode so far is probably "The Girl in the Fireplace", in part because I was rather entranced by the relationship between The Doctor and Reinette.

Something else I've noticed is the very real balance of fun and humanity and compassion in nearly every episode. Take for example... "The Idiot's Lantern". At the very end, we aren't just left with the father being kicked out and leaving. Rose urges the son to go after him because ... "he's your Dad".

A supremely good ride so far.

One more thing... gotta love the "Mr.Blue Sky" !

A Girl In The Fireplace is the second Hugo winer from Steven Moffat, School Reunion has my favorite exchange of the season between Rose and Sarah.

Sarah: I saw things you wouldn't believe!
Rose: Try me.
Sarah: Mummies.
Rose: I've met ghosts.
Sarah:Robots. Lots of robots.
Rose: Slitheen. In Downing Street.
Sarah: Daleks
Rose: [smugly]Met the Emperor.
Sarah:Anti-matter monsters!
Rose:Gas-mask zombies!
Sarah: Real living dinosaurs!
Rose: Real living werewolf!
Sarah: [emphasising each word] The Loch Ness monster!
Rose: [stunned] Seriously?

:guffaw:

And it looks like it's almost time to give you the next two seasons to watch.

Yep it is time, now. I just watched "Doomsday" this afternoon, meaning I saw the entirety of season 2 in the span of about 24 hours.

Pfffftttt.... I can think of a dozen times before that episode when I needed tissues.

Hehe, I hope you noticed the young black woman who was converted early on in Army Of Ghosts, you'll meet her look alike cousin in the third season. And I LOVED the Ghostbusters reference in Army Of Ghosts. :guffaw:

Now you have to go back and watch the confidentials.

I remember when it first aired and I cringed at that moment. Then realised I'm the kind of geek who would probably do the exact same thing

Season 2 was quite good, but I may have a memory bias as I watched 2 before 1 and Tennant got me watching again. I'm another who shows love for Girl in the Fireplace though the 'wall' moment at the end of the series was probably my favourite scene just because of the emotion poured into it - though theres a lot of people that don't think an emotional Doctor is such a good thing but I think it's nice to have it and make the companions less disposable.

There were some dips, New Earth, Fear Her and Love and Monsters for me - though they all had moments and endearing qualities. Love and Monsters was probably the worst of the series, but Elton and his perspective was fun to watch... and Mr Blue Sky - always good to hear ;)

The S2 special, Runaway Bride, seemed to get a love/hate reaction but I thought it was a lot of fun. For a Christmas special it had the right amount of action and humour and made me look forward to seeing Catherine Tate back again for S4.
