A second step into the Tardis

And the new Cybermen are genuinely disturbing

Yeah, I have a rather unpopular opinion about the Cybs. I think the "new" Cybermen are shit. I *much* prefer the original series ... I think the Tomb of the Cybermen era had the best Cybs, but still enjoyed them right up through the McCoy era. The new Cybs are just ... stupid.

Silver Nemesis was wrong on so many levels, I'm glad the new Cybermen have brought back the sense of menace they had in the old days IMO.

I love the design of the new Cybermen, but I'm not totally crazy about them originating on modern-day Earth now (even if it's a parallel one). It just robs them of too much of their mystery I think.

The new Cybermen lacked personality when they first arrived, I'm not keen on the parallel earth origin and I hate the 'Delete' catchphrase. Also whilst the upper half of the new design is great, I'm not crazy about the flared trousers leg design and the comfortable shoe feet

They were better in Doomsday (but I wish they hadn't quite been so much the Dalek's bitches) and I thought they were a lot more interesting in The Next Doctor though and am looking forward to them coming back...I dunno maybe TW's Cyberwoman put into perspective how badly done Cybermen could be!!

I'm not sure what to think of the new Cybes to be honest. I love the design, bellbottom trousers and all. The "delete" catchphrase is silly, but it fits their binary, "IT gone mad" nature, so I can see the thinking behind it.

Thing is, after The Invasion (the greatest Cybermen story they ever did imho), they became kinda goofy. Shaking their fists and saying "excellent!", showing far more emotion than they ever should have. The new series has rebooted them and rectified that to some extent.

I have no problem with the alternate Earth origin (it's basically taking the idea of Earth's "twin planet" of Mondas and re-tooling it with a more modern bent), but I think there's the possibility of decent episode coming from the idea of Mondasian cybermen meeting their Nu-Who counterparts, so I hope that is one day explored. Oh people will complain that Who isn't about continuity-porn etc, but if that was the case, Davros and the Master would have stayed dead.

I agree that perhaps the Mondasian Cybermen had too much personality in the end, but it did make them interesting. I did wonder during The Next Doctor whether...

The effect of Mercy Hartigan's mental domination would give them that little nudge of personality they used to have..guess not given the ending

Actually the Cybermen in The Next Doctor did seem more interesting at least.

It would be nice to see them as a space faring race once more too.

Gah, the Sean Connery and John Major sound alike Cybermen that Peter Davison had are the best.

The Cybus Cybermen are us, stripped of our humanity. The Mondasian Cyberman are evil robots from outer space. I like the former much more than the latter.

I agree to an extent, or rather I see where you're coming from, but Mondasian cybermen were "us" to an degree as well. They were originally humanoids, very similar to us, living on a planet that orbited the very same sun.

Whereas modern cybermen tap into our technology-obsessed culture, classic cybermen did exactly the same job for people of the 60s. The fears were different (transplant surgery, plastic surgery, etc), but the central idea is basically unchanged.

Personally I find the transplant surgery bandage covered half cybernetic cybermen more disturbing than the 'oh know our mobile phones have taken us over' Cybermen...that's probably just me though :D

Those cloth faced cybermen really freaked me the fuck out then they started speaking.

Also, cybermen with cybernetically enhanced but mutilated bodies are a bit more horrid than "we've put your brain in a nice new box".

The Tenth Planet worked because it felt like an old '50s sci-fi movie, I don't think that'd work nowadays, the original Cybermen were chilling to be sure but I found the recent ones pretty manacing in their own right. Plus I'm sure the original look would work on audiences nowsadays.

I wasn't suggesting for a moment that they should revert back to that design. It certainly wouldn't work on modern audiences, no argument.
