A Saudi girl group that dares to rock
By Robert F. Worth
Published: November 24, 2008

JIDDA, Saudi Arabia: They cannot perform in public. They cannot pose for album cover photographs. Even their jam sessions are secret, for fear of offending the religious authorities in this ultraconservative kingdom.

But the members of Saudi Arabia's first all-girl rock band, the Accolade, are clearly not afraid of taboos.

I support these kids in their efforts to Rock, even if it turns out that they suck. If anything will turn the tide against the evil of Religious Oppression (which is the worst evil of them all) then it's got to be the Almighty power of Rock 'N' Roll.

Keep on Rockin' girls. One day, thanks to your efforts (and the Almighty power of Rock 'N' Roll), you'll be Rockin' in the Free World. Nothing stands against the Soul of God personified through Music.

^^ They're definitely in danger. These religious extremists are misogynistic to the nth degree. We laugh at people here who cry about "side boobs;" women can't even show their faces in public there. :cardie:

I had to edit the OP because Posting of complete articles isn't allowed, but I encourage everybody to click the Link and read the whole thing. These girls may or may not be successful, but they are fighting the good fight; more power to them. :bolian:

Checked out there single on their MySpace page. Not too bad, though they need some work there's some real potential there.

Gotta give them props for guts. The worse than can happen here in the states is a college band breaks up or tanks hard. Over there, they're putting their lives on the line.

They're complete idiots. Is their music worth more than their lives? surely it's not that good.

Yeah. Undoubtedly the best thing for oppressed people to do is just bow their heads and take it. Don't make a stand: a sure-fire way of improving one's lot.

Emmeline Pankhurst should have just shut up and stayed at home too.

What possible difference could this girl group make? if anything them doing this and then getting hung for it is a sure-fire way of sending a message to the female population never to rise up again.
This girl group is going to throw a spanner in the works and going to spoil it for others who might have a better idea of how to fight back against oppression. It's a girl group of idiots.

What do you think they're going to do? sing a song to the Muslim clerics and leaders and hypnotise them into changing the way things are?

:brickwall:

I don't think that is a sound comparison.

She was in countries that were ostensibly promising her a set of rights and not going through with it. They weren't going to have an "official" stoning or throw acid in her face or whatever.

These kids are in a culture which is generally quite proud about the fact that women are to be treated more like livestock than humans.

Resisting Tyranny is always worthwhile, no matter how hopeless the odds may seem. After all, who would have thought that a bunch of farmers armed with Pitchforks and Flintlocks could stand against and defeat the British Army at the Empire's height in the late 1700's? Who would have thought that French Peasants could depose Louis XVI? Who would have thought that Eastern Europeans could cause the USSR to crumble?

History is replete with examples of a small group of rebels destroying various evil empires.

Exactly. It usually starts with small acts like throwing tea into a harbor or starting a band.

Well firstly that's complete and utter jibberish because you didn't just have Pitchforks and Flintlocks, you had backing from the French and the British had problems elsewhere in the world so didn't take you on with full power and secondly go read my last post.

I've been to the myspace page and listened to their song. I really liked it. Sure it needs work, and quite likely, it is only a demo. One has to understand the background from which the bands stems however. That is hardly traditional ground these ladies a treading on, and really, comparing it to professionally produced music from a well oiled industry is just ridiculous. This cannot be evaluated trough western and particularly north-american standards.

Girls of Riyadh is a quick, enjoyable read if anyone wants to take a look behind the veils in Saudi Arabia.

If they go to concert I demand they wear this:

Good for them. I hope no evil befalls them.

...and Tachyon Shield, you're dead wrong. Have you no intestinal fortitude? Tyranny must always be opposed and resisted with any means at people's disposal. Valuing your life above your freedom is cowardice in its purest form.
