Who here, along with myself, didn't care what color the phaser beams were? Who didn't care out of which port a torpedo was launched? He's not supposed to have that thingyjig? Well, I don't care.

Are there any of us left who just want to see a good TV show or a good movie?

Is there anyone else out there who were just hoping for well written dialog, a good story, interesting characters and good execution?

Can Trek fans no longer just be carried away with the film, or must you all spend the 2:07 counting widgets, then bitching about each one for hours?

Although I enjoy the continuity of Star Trek movies and shows my observation is that some people are treating canon as if it were sacred scripture.

But the bigger problem than that is people use their love of canon to turn their noses up at films and shows that might deviate from sacred canon.

There are people who hate this new movie solely on the basis of its divergence in canon. I am debating on another forum with people all upset that Chekov is in this movie and that Nero's changing of the time line should not affect when Chekov was born. That is when being a slave to canon has put a limit on a person's imagination.

Takes very little effort for me to come up with explanations or smooth over plotholes or integrate new facts or revised data into the pre-existing framework.

Continuity is a virtue, but it's not the only virtue. A fun movie that fudges the continuity is better than a dull movie that cleaves faithfully to "canon."

Fundamentally I agree with you guys, but you need to be careful. Otherwise they'll start messing with the concept of green chicks being irresistable and we'll end up with this as Kirk's next love interest...

I have to agree here. Often people who think they detest religious thought are far more influenced by it than they understand. It creeps into their lives in areas where it does not belong.

Canon per se does not matter. I actually think the current film went too far in trying to preserve "canon" and "continuity" or whatever. A simple reboot would probably have been even better.

What is good, though, is the depth that Trek history gives to these characters and events.

I come here because this place has standards and they are enforced.

I am very much in favor of the creators of the show showing care for maintaining canon. It's respectful, both to the material and to the viewers. If you introduce a new race and they look reptilian and blue, don't have them be insectoid and red the next time they show up without any explanation. It's just sloppy.

That said, there is definitely such a thing as policing canon too much, especially from the fans. So the hand phasers fired a continuous stream in one show, and a series of pulses this time? Big deal. And in my experience, far from being something to whine or get angry about, coming up with No-Prize-worthy Treksplanations for little stuff like that is part of the FUN of fandom.

I like the movie, saw it twice (Reg & IMAX) and will be buying the DVD (maybe even Blu-ray)...



I'm not a strict Canon-ist...

But I would have prefered something a lot closer to the continuity that has been established over the last forty some odd years...

Where are all the people who are actually upset about canon? Most of the complaints I read (and have myself) about this movie are in regards to the sketchy plot, characterization, or sets.

If there are complaints about continuity, it's because they made a half-ass attempt to conserve it via the time-travel story rather than just doing a simple reboot as they should have.

Yeah I think drastic adherance to canon really kinda makes things dull, a good movie should yes... respect what has come before, but at the same time needs to just go for it, have fun and make an enjoyable movie.

While sure, drastic canon violations, like say oh... saying Scotty's real name is Scott Montgomery would be totally BS. But eh, this movie fraggin rules and I'm happy with the nuCanon!

I mean look at Iron Man, it was based on the comics, but it changed things as it needed to make a good story. Iron Monger wasn't his dad's best friend or even his business partner in the comics, but did it matter? Not really.
