The final episode made it clear they didn't really win the lottery, so there's no need to ignore that part.

As for the rest, I'm fine with all of it. I loved the original show, until it was ruined by all that nonsense anyway.

Go back to the blue collar family that we knew and loved, and I'll be perfectly happy with that.

That's what they are doing. All that crap is being thrown out. However I had problems with the show before the lottery. When Roseanne got pregnant is when the show really nosedive.

This is a show that recast a main character and just went "I didn't even recognize my own daughter'. Just be funny. Roseanne is one of my favorite sitcoms.

Hell Will and Grace handled it perfect, ignored the stuff no one liked and just say it was Karen being high and drunk. That's probably the best continuation yet.

Be more like Will and Grace and less like The X-Files (Ugh) and I think most people will be happy.

    I said out, dammit!
Still one of my favorite sitcom 4th wall moments was when Lecy came back to the show, and when Becky walked in, Rosanne said "Where the hell have you been?"

I didn't really care about the Will and Grace revival, but I can get behind this for sure. I loved Roseanne as a kid; I basically grew up watching it. My family was super asian and I was an only child but we were not exactly well-off, in a not exactly well-off area. Every friend or family member depicted in Roseanne could have been someone from my childhood and they all dealt with stuff I saw all the time or dealt with myself. I was heartbroken by the final episode (despite my waning interest during the Lottery season).

Reading through this thread, I am assuming the following:

    - Lottery season is retconned out
    - This is a new alt-reality where Dan didn't die but they also didn't win the lottery?
    - This is basically Roseanne (the show in its original format) but just in present day?

I can't wait! Let's totally have Discovery-style canon violation discussions on whether or not the new events can fit into the grand unified theory of Roseanne continuity.

I don't think the other changes will be acknowledged. I just think it will be as if they loaded a 'save state' from right before the lottery win and kept playing for 20 years.

I'm one of the four people in the entire galaxy that actually likes the finale - undoing the lottery mistake, reversing who was married to whom... Dan dying - it's a tragic ending... OTOH, it's great that John Goodman is returning as Dan - the show would be harder to do without him; the show did star Roseanne but the ensemble cast made it that much more iconic.

As much as the later seasons were hit or miss, the 4th camera stuff with the two Beckys was hilarious. But, yeah, after season 5 it made a lot of changes. Even after season 4... doesn't mean there weren't good episodes throughout the second half of the show's run, just not as many :(

See, all the 1990s kids are getting put in charge of things, so we get Girl Meets World, Fuller House, and this. I'm not looking forward to it, personally...the main reason I enjoyed it as a kid was John Goodman.

I have a higher opinion of Roseanne as a comedian than the creative forces behind Full House and Boy Meets World, so I think it has a higher chance of success than those.

All depends on whether Roseanne has the same handle on 2017 poverty that she did on 1989 poverty. If she can tap into the same thing, but for current culture, it could work.

I don't. I love her, I voted for her for president in 2012, but she is out of touch with reality. The last few seasons of the show even showed that.

Actually, it didn't, depending on which way you are looking at it. The [then] series finale made it clear there were two unvierses: the fake one we saw for several seasons in which they won the lottery and Dan stayed alive, and the real one we never saw that the Roseanne character talked about in the closing approx. ten minutes of the finale, where Dan did die and apparently -- by the looks of her writer's room -- they aren't as poor as they were in the series.

The Roseanne character talked about what the real universe was like:
    * Leon was not as cool as I made him to be.
    * Scott (Leon's husband in the fictional Roseanne universe, or the show) was a probate lawyer and she introduced Leon to him.
    * Her mother was not gay and was submissive as a wife.
    * Jackie was really gay.
    * Nancy found a great spiritual awakening.
    * Becky and Darlene's husband's at the end were switched.
    * Real verse Dan died when he had a heart attack.

So, it depends on how they are going to approach the series; are they going to go with the fake universe her character created where they won the lottery* and Dan stayed alive or the real one we never saw. They say Dan faked his death, so that means they are going with the real life we never saw, however I am wondering if they are confusing things and forgotten the whole Roseanne voiceover from the series finale, 'cause that would mean dropping the entire series of established loved characters, backgrounds, events, and supplant it with new ones we never saw.

    * = I say won the lottery, but really, as the show showed, they blew it all and ended broke in the fake universe; she gave the local factory the amount she won and on top of that there was all the spending they did on various things including improving the inside of the house, so the fake universe characters were in debt. They looked awfully happy about it; no doubt the show writers simply didn't realize what they did.

My take (from just this thread and the replies therein) is that the revival will be a third reality in which they didn't win the lottery, Dan didn't die, and the characters are as we knew them pre-lottery, and have been going about their lives as poor-ish people off screen up until this point. I think the idea is that the 'real' Roseanne is writing a new book inspired by the first, but is not a direct continuation of.

Also I do not recall them losing the money or ending up poor again, but it has been a VERY long time since I've seen this show. And I think that thing about Dan faking his death and placing this show in the 'real' universe is just outdated musings of Roseanne's blog from a few years ago? That's what a cursory Google search has yielded.

But I 100% expect them to address the new timeline with a fourth wall joke along the lines of, "Jesus Christ, Dan, get over it. It's not like you DIED or anything."

Yeah I don't remember them going broke in any universe.

In my mind I'm just going to pretend the last season never happened. Darlene and David still have a baby with the same name, but it's several years later now than in the lottery winning universe.

Will and Grace proved no one really cares about continually if the show is good. (Looks over at the ST- Discovery board.... ;) )

Just out of curiosity (since I wasn't interested in seeing he revival) what sort of continuity errors have popped up in Will & Grace?

They picked what they wanted to keep and ignore the crap everyone hated.

The finale was ignored, Stan is alive, Grace never had children or got pregnant. Everyone fans hated about the last few seasons of the show was ignored and they just said it was Karen being high and drunk.

It's a sitcom, and an old one. Cohesive continuity in sitcoms was never really their strong point/main focus. As long as there is still chemistry between Roseanne, John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf, it could be good.
To be honest it's probably best if they don't bother trying to explain what's been retconned or not. It would either take up time or be flippant and and the end of the day, who cares? It's going to be a very small minority of people who remember the finer details of the last season anyway.

I only saw the finale a few years back, and while the last season was a train wreck (although enjoyable to watch through once as a head scratcher), I found the finale to be pretty affecting. Having said that, I was hungover as fuck the day I watched it so maybe I was more emotionally fragile

What will they do about the Mark character? Recast? The idea for a revival in 2009 was that he died in Iraq.

Then it negates the whole point of the final season and eliminates the fake reality and the real reality. What a sucky way to handle things, if they do it this way.

But winning the lottery and Dan dying were two different universes, so it looks like you're confusing things.

It ruins one of the best series finales of all time, puts our characters straight back where they were in the fake universe, and for what? To keep the show going? What shit.

Like I said, it was poorly handled, so I don't think the writers even realized what they did. They won the lottery, then some episodes latter somebody asked for money for the factory Roseanne used to work at, to keep it from shutting down since it employees so many less well-off people in the town. The amount was close to or exactly the same amount as they won. And she gave it. And that was on top of what they spend on all kinds of things, including a new car, so that leaves them close to or in the hole. I wish I could locate the episode and get the precise amount she gave.

You're probably right, but Roseanne will be the one creating and writing for the show, so if she can't recall what the series finale did, she's just fucking things up for what will no doubt be nothing but an attempt to push back on the Right, push social agendas, and build her name again after her crazy ramblings while running for President (which included wanting to behead people who make over a certain amount, which would mean beheading Jackie! No, she wasn't joking -- pull it up on Youtube).

The whole idea would blow chunks. Do people so badly want to relive a 1980's TV show that they'll let it shit all over what it did just so they can have new episodes?

I wasn't confused, I'm saying that neither the lottery nor the death happened, which negates the chance of this series happening in either of those respective timelines placing this in a third reality. What you see as a bad choice being made for a cheap episode grab I consider a good decision... for a cheap episode grab.

Meh. The original never interested me, and I won't be watching this either.
    I'm not big on sitcoms.
