A Remake of the Cage

"Cerebral". :guffaw: The Cage is good, but I wouldn't call it cerebral. I've heard this was network code for "too sexy". ;)
It was "too Cerebral" because the ending involved talking and exposition. the big fight scene with the Kaylar warrior occurred in the middle.

GR and Co. fixed that in the second pilot (The Cage) by ending it with a knock down drag out fist fight between Kirk an Mitchell.

(And both episodes were equally 'Cerebral' in that they both delt with various aspects of the human conscious and subconscious mind. The only difference was when the major action scene occured within each respective pilot episode.)

Most Trek episodes have a talky ending. There was action towards the end when Pike does his breakout and holds the Talosian at gun point.
But it wasn't your classic TV Western style ending, unlike The Cage Where No Man Has Gone Before which was probably what the Execs were wanting - hence why The Cage Where No Man Has Gone Before ultimately sold the series.

Edited - Got the two pilot titles confused - edited to correct.

I think the suits didn't feel the cast chemistry, which is why they pretty much said dumping everyone but Nimoy was fine with them. The TOS cast with the same script would have improved the pilot.

I know they didn't want Majel in a lead role because she was his mistress. Aside from Dr. Boyce, her and Spock were the only other leads: and they had no issues with Jeffery Hunter as it was Hunter's wife who didn't want him to continue in the second pilot.

As I recall, they told him he could keep Spock or Number One and he chose Spock.

Once they got William Shatner and saw his take, along with the NBC memo requesting all NBC shows have more minority representation probably had more to do with a lot of the recasting.

Pretty sure Tyler and Colt were meant to be regulars. They were in the pitch/outline. I've heard that about Hunter. Might be part myth.

Another myth. This one propagated by Gene.

That much is true. Though by the second pilot they had Sulu and Alden. Not sure if the memo came between pilots.

Based on the Rigel IV mission with the Kaylar shown in "Among the Lotus Eaters", there's a continuity issue with the uniforms being the same as now isn't there? Part of the visual reboot we just shrug and call it close enough...

Although the Cage turtlenecks and lack of red tops for Engineering/Security, seem to have been pushed back to April's Enterprise - judging by some set decoration photo of him and Pike.

And then there's the Discovery seen tunics with their lop-sided collars, apparently also in use as far back as Spock's first time boarding the Enterprise in that Short Trek.

While sacrilegious to reimagine the first pilot, I do get the desire to see new actors playing Dr. Boyce and Tyler in a mission from years earlier - and particularly show what became of them. Or alternatively, the Enterprise catches up with the other ship or starbase they've been reassigned to.

Why do you keep calling "Where No Man Has Gone Before" "The Cage"?

The 'red' tops were peach in the first two pilots. Look closely and you can tell the difference.

They may as well do a flashback story and redo it. (The MENAGERIE version of events, NOT the CAGE since there are some significant changes)They have just about retconed 50% of TOS. May as well go for broke and put a different spin on the story. They can even use the title the Cage since it was a failed pilot.

Doesn't matter if they showed that clip from the Menagerie when they said...Last time on Star Trek. That was just (what every else keeps saying about Picard Season Three)..Fanwank... 😂

The Cage looks like it does because Pike and the crew's memories were jumbled after their time on the mindwiping Rigel VII and the episode is filmed from their perspective.
