A question about the fifth doctor's female companion

I don't remmber the girls name but I believe she was asian american. I wonder if any one knows what happened to her?
and what her name is? thank you.

There's also this marvelous thing called TrekBBS, where the poster could ask and expect an accurate answer without having to trawl through a site.

Oh and the answer is: Peri

She appeared in only two fifth Doctor stories:-
Planet of Fire
Caves of Androzani

To be fair, at her introduction most people weren't looking at her face. Peter Davison included. :P

There weren't any explicitly non-caucassian companions until Mickey Smith and Martha Jones, and no, Chang Lee doesn't count.

Well, there was Sharon Davies.

We're talking TV here. Otherwise you could also include Destrii...

And to be fair, I've seen publicity photos of Nicola from the making of Planet of Fire and she did have a bit of an Asian look to her in some of them so I can understand the confusion.

Geographically out of the 5th Doctor's 3 different female companions, I would say Tegan would be the closest thing to an Asian.

Fair point! And Janet at least had the decency to actually be the nationality she was portraying ;)

since we are on the subject of the 5th doctor's companions, he seemed to rather favour Teegan, and for the life of me, I can not figure out why.. I always found her rather annoying and at times whinny and crass.

Are you complaining about Nyssa not being played by someone from Trakken? ;)

StarSuperion, he favored Teagan, because he liked the abuse ;)

Truth be told, Teagan is a great companion for the 5th Doctor IMHO, because his portrayal was so subtle adn underplayed, so, you kinda needed a boistrous companion to offset the Doctor, IMHO.

well maybe she was chosen because at times Peter Davison's Doctor would become touchy and raise his voice, and Teagan would give as good as she got.. however, I think my main complaint wasn't about her as an actress, so much as her voice...Like Fran Drescher it drives me crazy! They are not the same, however they both sound like nails on a chalk board to me.. especially when she got that nasally deep throat-ed flustered speak going..

Heh, I'm with you on Fran Drescher, but, yea, Teagan didn't bother me at all, I enjoyed her run

?? She SO wanted approval from him when she emerged in that really wonderful dress in Enlightenment, and the look of disappointment on her face when he just "huppf"s and walks off is priceless. One of the few times in the classic series when a companion seemed to want a bit more.

Ahh, ask an Aussie about Tegan's accent. Janet Fielding admits that by the time she started in Who, she'd been in the UK, playing English accented roles, for so long that she had to put on her Australian accent, and overdid it.

That was an impressive dress, and she rivalled Peri in the frontage stakes whilst wearing it.

I always had a hard time remembering who was who; was there some distinguishing character traits between Nyssa and Tegan? I think the Fifth Doctor's travels would have been alot better if they had cut one of the two girls.
