A post in another BBS got me thinking about Khan

That did get a reaction in last night's screening, now that you mentioned it, and I wondered why. I guess I've never noticed his glare. And I've seen the movie too many times to look.

I'd have to pop in my Blu-Ray to check it out, and I already sat through the movie four times this week at the Galaxy Cannery. I know the exact moment, just gotta look at his face next time.

It has been a long time since I've watched this movie as a movie.
I tend to watch collections of clips.

Regarding Kirk's famous yell of "Khan!", I don't think Kirk was faking for Khan's benefit.
Khan is smarter than Kirk and Kirk knows it. But Khan hates Kirk and Kirk knows it, and he knows he can use that to make Khan make mistakes.
Kirk's plan, such as it is, is to keep Khan's attention. Maybe the Enterprise will come to Kirk's rescue, maybe it will just escape, but either of those require that Khan doesn't hunt it down and finish it off. So Kirk separates himself from the Enterprise and makes sure Khan knows.
And Khan's intellect just this once overrides his ego and allows him to decide to deal with Kirk later.
Kirk yells because Khan has decided to ignore him, and that threatens the plan.

Buy maybe I'm remembering that wrong.

The novel also said that Khan took over a additional twenty of the crew prior to beaming down the rest (why did he do that as oppose to killing them?).

The twenty would have been killed in combat with the Enterprise, or when Khan blew up the Reliant.

That's as good an explanation as I've ever heard. I'd have to go with that.

The engineering crew. Remained aboard Reliant with eels in their brains.

Otherwise it would've been simpler to just leave them marooned with the rest of Reliant crew rather than killing them. Khan also still needs Chekov's and Terrell's cooperation, and we see later his control over them is limited (they're suggestible but have nothing to lose).

In 'Space Seed' he acknowledges he needs Starfleet crew to help operate a ship this complex. He's probably confident he can use anybody, but since he's no longer taking volunteers it might as well be an engineering crew.

Did we ever find out if Lieutenant Kyle died on Ceti Alpha V? I wonder if John Winston was cast because he appeared in the actual television episode with Khan, Space Seed?

You know, I don't think even the novelizations ever answered what became of Kyle. Poor guy.

Also, Kirk banished Khan, apparently because he bought Spock's argument that the world should never be told about seventy surviving Napoleons, but also thought Khan should live.

I never thought Kirk was banishing him secretly. They wouldn't hide this major historical find. Moreover too many people saw it and were traumatized by it. It was too late to cover it up. I think Kirk's like about it being a waste to put them in a rehabilitation prison was his argument to Star Fleet justifying marooning them after a short legal proceeding on the Enterprise.

Why would Terrell feel any differently?

Kirk wanted to Maroon Khan on a M class planet. Ceti Alpha V was barely inhabitable after its climate changed. On one hand, I could see Terrell saying they survived for 15 years after the climate disaster, they can wait a few weeks for a well-equipped prison ship came. OTOH, I could see him evacuating them onto the Reliant, giving Khan a chance to take over Reliant.
