A NuFan Perspective

(I was going to post this in another thread, and then accidently lost the whole darn thing just before it saved. Feeling maybe that was a sign, I decided to make a thread.)

As a complete and total newb, I apologize in advance for all the things I don't know about Star Trek and probably never will. I'm posting to offer the perspective of the Completely New Fan, a perspective -- from what I've read -- many of you have heard from your coworkers and children and friends, but I'm wondering if there are others like me reading here in the last month. To start off, I want to make it clear I'm probably not even a casual Trek fan. I have watched a few of the movies, and I know enough to know who most of the main characters are in most of the series, but I would name the franchise at perhaps 12th on my list of scifi franchises. Not that I am derisive of the franchise, but up to this point it's never hit me in the right way at the right time. As for this movie, I had no interest in seeing it, whatsoever. It wasn't just that it was Star Trek. I've never liked anything made by J.J. Abrams, I find Orci/Kurtzman scripts to be ridiculous and annoying, and the previews looked far too Michael Bay for my tastes. It was a small miracle I ended up in the theater on opening weekend, popcorn and husband by my side, ready to be entertained.

Despite what my presence on this board might imply, I wasn't immediately enthralled with this movie. Sure, I enjoyed it. It was pretty and amusing, and lots of large things went "boom." There was something about it I really enjoyed, but I must admit I rolled my eyes when it was revealed that Chekov was yet ANOTHER young genius (Baby Einstein Count at 4), and rolled them again when Scotty added one more to the count. And the water pipe shenanigans got a well earned, "this episode was badly written" from my spouse; answered with "whoever wrote this episode should die." By the time Kirk got official command of the Enterprise, we could only giggle.

But then, something happened. The film percolated for a few days, and I went back and watched it again. And again. (And maybe a fourth time.) And I realized what really sold the movie for me. The plot is, of course, really pretty silly. But the characters are just really well done. They're well casted and the direction seems pretty impeccable (I don't think many dispute that anymore). Also -- and I kind of hate to say this about an Orci/Kurtzman script -- I think they're fairly well written.

I found myself invested in their struggles, believing them to be idiosyncratic unique individuals -- being both admirable and sometimes unlikable, but always accessible to the audience. That's harder to achieve than it sounds, and I suspect it's the reason for the 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Having read here for a few weeks, I know there's a good chance someone will mock that assertion with an oversimplification ("driving fast and starting fights over your daddy issues.... ooooh, such original character development"), but I believe it's true, though much is not explicit. And, although I did enjoy some of the explicit character exploration (like the post Kobashi Maru debate and Pike's first discussion with Kirk), I also enjoyed what's left undiscussed, like Spock's out-of-character jettisoning of Kirk. In that instance, as we find out later in Spock's discussion with his father, we find that Spock was finding himself consumed with the uncomfortable emotional need for vengeance, and yet here he doesn't show it, and instead takes a fairly unreasonable stance against the man proposing the course of action Spock himself must have been tempted to take. That I find interesting.

So, yeah, Nero was underdeveloped, the plot had holes, and the coincidences were as numerous as the light flares. I can understand why someone who finds perfect plot cohesion and exploration of intellectual/scientific ideals to be imperative for a good story would hate it. But I love this movie because I cared about Kirk and Spock (and Uhura and Pike ...) and I found their character growth interesting. Or maybe, I was more concerned with the nature of these two men than I am about the nature of man in general.

Re: A New Fan Perspective

Welcome! I agree with alot of what you said about the movie and I'm happy it has grown somewhat on you. Perhaps with some time Trek will grow to be your number 1 sci-fi franchise ;)

Probably not possible. I am an uberfan of Farscape. (And love original trilogy Star Wars in that way you love all things you coveted in your youth.)

It sounds like you would enjoy the original series.

One of my closer friends is watching them now and he's tempting me. I've seen many on sciffy, left on as background noise, but I always have trouble getting past Shatners hamminess to pay close attention. It's a possibility though.

Welcome!

Yeah, Trek XI is pretty spiffy.

Im a longtime fan of the original series and I also thought they did a particularly good job of nailing those iconic characters.

that really dosnt show up until later in the series.
if you liked the movie there are some episodes you really might like.

some of the first season and some later ones like especially journey to babel that featured spock's parents on enterprise.

Thanks for all the welcomes! I'm annoying my husband and friends talking about this movie, so I figured it was time to delurk here. I can annoy y'all instead. ;)

From what I remember of the original characters, I think Urban particularly nailed the character. Quinto almost did, although I'd like him to have more of Nemoy's arch not-amused demeanor in future movies. Here he had an unlikeable know-it-all stick up his bum (which, like I said, I feel was actually good for the character here -- being unlikeable yet sympathetic at the same time) that I'd like to see turn into Nemoy awesomeness. Even I, as a nonfan, know Nemoy is awesome. As for PineKirk, I sometimes feel like maybe he was channeling more the public perception of Kirk than actual TOS Kirk. My friend that is rewatching TOS was talking about how serious Kirk was, and how that doesn't jive with the perception of him. I wonder if much of the nature of the character comes from the persona of Shatner himself. (For example, what little I remember of TOS, Kirk was more a ladies' man because of sheer volume of women he was madly in love with for one episode. He didn't do the cocky Playa' schtick.) That works though, because it modernizes Kirk to what we think he was, not what he actually was.

kirk actually did a lot more flirting then actual hooking up.
but he was a flirt. though at times it was for a purpose to start out with but
then he would get caught up in it.

he did indeed have a sense of humor..and it could come out at odd times.

See. So much I don't know.

I don't even know that I have time to watch TOS. I'm very tempted though.

EDIT: Forgive me for only posting in my own thread right now. I'm scared in other places, because I'm new and nu.

I would love to get in on the Mary Sue discussion though. Because, yeah, I almost registered to respond to that thread, and then realized it was closed. Darn it.

welcome to the place..

really only if you watch an episode a week you might find out you like tos.

:)

hmm maybe

The Corbomite Maneuver (not one of the pilots but it is a really great intro
into the characters..plus the concept of exploration..some of the best kirk mccoy interaction of the series)

Balance Of Terror.. intro of the romulans.. the romulan commander is an interesting character

shore leave and trouble with tribbles.. two of the out right fun episodes

Errand of mercy.. into of the klingons..
see kirk smart talk the council of elders of a planet
;)

city on the edge of forever.. grand tragedy and time travel

doomsday machine..
one of the best performances by shatner

hi miniglik, it's so nice to meet you! I'm glad you registered. it was really interesting and gratifying to read your perspective. I've been hearing about new fans and I believe you've verbalized and crystalized a lot of what they feel. don't be afraid to ask us questions and annoy us. we're an annoying lot anyways

as pookha said, you might want to watch a select few eps of TOS to begin with. the thing with Shatner is that, once you begin to watch him, the obvious ham that he is begins to fade and the real genius of the character he helped to create shines through. even at its campiest, this character lends Trek its heart.

some of the first season eps I'd recommend are Charlie X, Balance of Terror, Tomorrow is Yesterday, Space Seed, This Side of Paradise, Devil in the Dark, and the City on the Edge of Forever. I hope you like them.. and envy you no end!

don't be a stranger... come back and talk to us whenever you feel like it. :)

You've made some good points, and what you said is probably what moist of us were thinking, that while the plot hoels are big and a bit silly, it's the characters that drive this movie.

So don't be scared of us! We're weird and nerdy, not scary and violent. :)

yeah charlie x has some interesting uhura and spock moments..
plus an interesting tale of a young boy..

the devil in the dark is also one of my fav episodes.
an interesting take on the monster in the dark.

it also has one of the great bones lines of i am a doctor not ____

I hear a lot about some of these eps. I'm not sure if I'm ready yet to be a fan of TOS. I'm at the coin toss phase. But I'll have this post to refer to.

I'm mostly not scared of you, except in that I am incapable of intelligent discussion on Most Things Trek (considering it's a 40+ year institution). But weird and nerdy is my people. I'm a math nerd who married a math nerd, who named one of her children after a fantasy character. ;) And I'm going to SDCC this year. :techman:

I had to laugh; in addition to "this episode was badly written" and "whoever wrote this episode should die," -- "There's this stupid spinning fan in every episode" passed between us. The only difference is that the blades were under water...

Thanks for your well written OP; I enjoyed it very much. And I enjoyed the movie, even though we are on opposite ends of the Trek scale. I started watching the show on NBC in 1966 when I was 13 -- and I've seen the new movie 11 times so far.

Among the TOS episodes that ladies often like are "Journey to Babel" and "Amok Time," because they are Spock episodes. But I honestly couldn't recommend anything other than watching the series from the beginning. You get to learn along with Gene, the cast and writers. It's a growing experience, like a garden.

Welcome to the board and to Star Trek. :) Very nice to see you.

Well, there are other parts to the board. Science and Technology, TV & Media, even Miscellaneos. Some interesting and different discussion goes on there, not just about Trek.

Sadly, there is no Maths subforum. :) Though I have seen some serious maths discussed in realation to physics.

Im gonna give you a fair warning. Stay away from The Neutral Zone. To steal from bones TNZ is a disease and danger wrapped in darkness and posters who wont shut the hell up :p

Speaking of which.....I've seen this TNZ mentioned, but it doesn't show up in my forum list. How do I find it? Maybe I haven't made enough posts to access it? Not that I personally want to start anything, mind you. ;) But you do want to see true colors.
