La La Land announced a new edition of the TMP soundtrack. A limited 2-disc edition, which is one disc shorter than their previous release.

Here's what La La Land says about the site:
This new 2-CD edition is the official tie-in soundtrack to the forthcoming STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE: THE DIRECTOR’S EDITION, premiering this year on the Paramount Plus streaming service.

Post-Production Supervisor/Associate Producer Mike Matessino co-produces the album with Bruce Botnick, handling restoration, editing and assembly of the music.

This edition definitively presents the full film score on CD1, continuing through the start of CD2. The program now begins with the long version of the “Overture,” reflective of “The Director’s Edition,” with the short version heard in 1979 now kicking off a section of “Alternates” on CD2, which feature early versions of major score cues that were later reworked. Closing out the presentation is the enduring 1979 soundtrack album program, now re-created from the remixed first generation master material for consistent and superior sound quality throughout the set.

I can't justify picking this up for myself, but great news for anyone who missed the previous release.

I got the 3-disk release the last time they opened it up. I also picked up the deluxe TFF soundtrack about a year ago. I definitely do not regret either purchase

I don't believe La-La Land puts these releases out on iTunes or other digital storefronts since the physical releases are limited editions.

According to the press release, the liner notes booklet will feature new images from "The Director's Edition." They really meant it when they said this release would tie-in with the new Director's Edition.

Mike Matessino's posted some more details over on FSM's forums. Interesting stuff regarding Sony's rights (or lack thereof) to the 1999 edition.

As someone who missed the 3-CD release, this is just a bonus reason for me to pick up this release. Looking forward to it.

I should also check out more of their catalogue. I've been wanting the full score from X2 for years and I had no idea La-La Land put one out. Saw it on their "less than 20 left!" notice when ordering this and I'm so glad I did.

My set came in and I'm extremely happy with it! It sounds amazing especially compared to the 1999 Sony release. I always thought there was something off about it and I'm glad that the articles on this release confirm that it was using a lot of incorrect takes. I'm very glad to have the actual proper takes in my music library now. Makes me more excited for the DE coming later this year too.

The liner notes have some interesting facts about the recordings that I didn't know either. Nice to get more history on it, especially when it's mostly positive history (as opposed to much of the rest of the production).

I picked up the 3-CD release, so I'll likely pass on this one unless there's some serious differences/improvements.

The interviews with the folks who did this release say that there's not much difference between the music on the 3-CD set and this one except for the remixed version of the original score.
Sonically the main score and the alternates are basically the same, with, as I said, just some minor cleanup, and then the 1979 album this time around is a re-creation from the same material used for the rest of the presentation. The 3CD set remains a be-all, end-all collector’s item as it includes other alternate takes, false starts, and scoring stage chit-chat, discrete beam and synthesizer tracks, and two theme cover versions, one by Bob James, and one a song based on the love theme that was recorded as a demo by Shaun Cassidy.

I think they said the biggest amount of work went into fixing up the tracks from the old LP. I actually never listen to those tracks so I feel covered with my old 3 disc set which I put into iTunes / Apple Music long ago.

I should point out that the re-built original album is using the same mixes that were used for the film score presentation. While the quality is certainly better, it is a different-sounding experience when compared to the original album mix. For example, during the 'Klingon Battle', the "clicks" made from an angklung (Thank you Indysolo) have been dialed down and the water chimes that occur a minute into Spock Walk are almost totally gone. Just something to consider if you're only in it for the reconstructed album.

Here we go!

To celebrate paramount FINALLY going full steam ahead with the Director's Edition of TMP, I went ahead and took the poster artwork that David C. Fein released, cropped it and added extra titles to work with this soundtrack release. Hope you like it!
