A New Companion?

Spoilers obviously!

Looks like those rumours about one of Clara's fellow teachers joining the Tardis crew were true, only it isn't the guy who was in Time of the Doctor.

I've never seen this guy in anything but I've always like the idea of multiple companions (Jamie and Zoe, Amy and Rory, Tegan/Nyssa/Turlough/Adric) so I have high hopes.

Ok it doesn't say companion as such, but I wonder if he'll be a recurriring character who steadily gets more involved like Mickey or Rory?

Rising star Samuel Anderson (The History Boys, Gavin & Stacey, Emmerdale) is set to join the cast of Doctor Who as a recurring character in Series 8, which will also introduce Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

Anderson will play Danny Pink, a teacher at Coal Hill School where companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) also teaches. On joining the show Samuel Anderson said: "I was so exited to join Doctor Who I wanted to jump and click my heels, but I was scared I might not come down before filming started!"

He continued: “It's a quintessential part of British culture and I can't believe I'm part of it. It's an honour to be able to work alongside Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman and I can't wait to show people how my character becomes involved with such a fantastic duo!".

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, added: "For the fourth time in Doctor Who history, Coal Hill School is coming to the aid of the TARDIS. In 1963 teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright accompanied the First Doctor. These days it's the turn of Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald. And very soon now, Sam Anderson as Danny Pink will be entering the world of the Doctor. But how and why? Answers are coming later this year in Peter Capaldi's first series of Doctor Who!".

Filming recently began on episode 4 of the new series, which will co-star Robert Goodman (Gangs of New York, Game of Thrones) and episode 5, co-starring Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch, Groove High), and Pippa Bennett-Warner (The Smoke, Death in Paradise).

No. No! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

NO! Not another bloody male companion, and just as soon as we got rid of bloody Amy and Rory. I don't hate the casting, in fact I think that's probably well cast but the fact we have a new male companion. NO! To be honest, I think I would rather have him as the doctor instead of Capaldi. Hell, he looks older than Smith was!

Clara and Danny will be going on a date

From set reports, Clara is supposed to be nervous

Nothing at all and in fact I would love to see The Doctor travel with a guy for a while. I don't understand why it always has to be a girl.

He's "exited" to join the cast? He wants to go already?

IMO, Moffat's tenure overall hasn't been all it should be, but some eps have been staggeringly good. I'll give him the benefit and see how Twelve shapes up.

TARDIS Sex Protocols?

(Pick one.)

1, Banning sex/honour system banning sex/Celibacy contracts.

2, Shielding the TARDIS completely from the stuff that makes Time Heads.

3, Shielding just the bedrooms from the stuff that makes Time Heads (because only the Doctor would believe that sex only happens in bedrooms.).

(edit)

What do you mean "The" Lantern?

He's "a" Lantern.

If anyone is "The" Lantern around here, it's Me.

Well, an argument can be made that there should be an attempt at gender equality and that when it's just Doctor and companion, given the Doctor has so far always been male the companion should be female, just for balance sake. That's not to say there's anything wrong with male companions, nor would I be opposed to the Doctor having a male companion only.

Turlough also works in a pinch. And the Second Doctor and Jamie were always fun.

Mark
And The 2nd Doctor definitely liked Jamie better than Zoe, as can be seen in The Space Pirates, where they're all knocked out cold and he walked over Zoe in order to make sure Jamie was alright, instead of checking the Companion closest to him first

Hopefully he's actually a companion and not a supporting Earth-bound character, thus ensuring more than necessary Earth-bound, present-day stories. I also love multiple-companion TARDIS crews, so I really hope that's the case here.

Agreed on both points. I feel like we've really reached a saturation point with present day Earth stories. (And if we have to have them, at least treat them like regular stories and don't use it as yet another excuse for the companion to visit home again.)

I also think 2 companions is much better than 1. If there's only 1 companion, you only get 1 combination: AB. Add just 1 more companion and you suddenly quadruple the options: AB, AC, BC, & ABC.

I suspect there's also an element of bringing on board a good looking young guy to appease the younger female audience but if he works, I don't mind.

I still think it's funny that, when I showed my step-mother pictures of all 12 Doctors, her immediate reaction was that Capaldi was the most attractive by far. Perhaps Capaldi is bringing in just as much sex appeal but to a demographic with more disposable income!;)

Funny how some people thought of Micky when they say him. First character I thought of was the very cool police detective in Blink.

Actually that's a good call. Irrespective of his ethnicity his whole body language suggests someone comfortable, someone cool. Right from the off Mickey was furtive, somewhat oblivious and, lets be honest, not the sharpest tool in the box (mad computerz skillz not withstanding.)

When I saw the picture, the body language & the look in his eyes reminded me of Mickey, but specifically badass Mickey from late Season 2 onwards.

It's not so much that it's a male companion, it's that we've had too many lately. It's mainly because I hated Rory so much I'm a bit hesitant to accept a new companion, but at least this "Danny Pink" looks sort of manly. Thing is though I think he'd work as the Doctor better than Capaldi.

What's wrong with a male companion?

Not a darn thing. Sounds like the Lanterns just being hateful again.
It's mainly because I hated Rory so much that I'm hesitant about another male companion again so soon after plus Moffat always seems to be terrible at casting. Plus Moffat seems to get most of his inspiration from the areas of the show I dislike the most.

You wanna fight over the title. And since was Guy gardener "The" Lantern? ;)

We have? Rory's the third in modern Who. Or fifth, if you count the ones from Tennant's specials like Jackson Lake or Wilfred Mott. Compared to the five regular female companions the modern era which can increase to eleven if you want to include the companions from Christmas specials, Tennant's gap year, count Clara from The Snowmen as a separate person and include River.

Doesn't really seem like "too many" male companions to me.

I had Rory as the fourth (not counting the one-off companion-like characters) -- Adam, Jack, Mickey, Rory.

Which mean that, again not counting the one-off companion-like characters, we will have had the same number of male and female companions once the new guy joins the crew. It would be worth noting, however, that the male companions, save Rory, were short-term companions; Adam is a JNT-style "roll on, roll off" companion, and Mickey's not much better once he joins Team TARDIS.
