A New Companion?

To be honest, he does kind of remind me of Mickey. Try to understand, I'm not saying that because he's black, I'm not ignorant enough to believe "they all look the same." But there is something about those pictures and the fact he's Clara's friend who may join the TARDIS team that makes me think of Mickey.

Obviously, I'll try to keep an open mind and not pre-judge the guy. After all, in season 5 Rory was very much "Mickey 2.0" but over the course of time he eventually developed his own distinct personality and character and I don't even notice the Mickey similarities when I watch season 5 episodes anymore. But the similarity is there, at least it is to me.
Really? Hair is close cropped, so, that's the same. But, Clara's not blonde, we haven't heard he's her boyfriend, he's got a beard, different style of dress, he's a teacher, and I don't recall ever seeing Mickey pose like that. This guy has a beard, and lighter skin. I don't really see any similarity aside from the hair and that Clara's white?

It's indefinable, but there is something about him that reminds me of Mickey. Perhaps I am subconsciously racist, although I'd hate to think so.

Although, Mickey also had a beard. Maybe that's it, beards. Say, does anyone else look at those pictures and think of Jonathan Frakes?

I think I'll just quietly back out of this now.
Wait..When did Mickey have a beard*? A day or two of growth in a couple shabby instances, maybe, and maybe a beard in The End of Time Farewell tour (Don't remember for certain), but, I don't recall him having an actual beard as Mickey, other than maybe that final scene? Do I need to rewatch? I googled Images for Mickey Smith Doctor Who and don't see Mickey with a beard?

Yea, "hasn't aged a Day"... my mom is 76, and William Russel looks considerably younger than her, so considering SarahJane (Who also "hasn't aged a day") actually did age, I think it's easy to take that line as poetic License, rather than literally.

*Rose doesn't count, because it was Rickey, not Mickey that liked Spiky Haired Blonde Boys.

I don't know, not crazy about the idea. With two companions it always seems like one is kind of extraneous. Besides it feels like we're just getting to know Clara. Hopefully Old Man Capaldi doesn't feel slighted, heh.

Funny how some people thought of Micky when they say him. First character I thought of was the very cool police detective in Blink.

Actually that's a good call. Irrespective of his ethnicity his whole body language suggests someone comfortable, someone cool. Right from the off Mickey was furtive, somewhat oblivious and, lets be honest, not the sharpest tool in the box (mad computerz skillz not withstanding.)

I liked Mickey a lot, and I loved Rory to bits, but it'd be nice to have a male companion who wasn't the bumbling nerdy type with the cool girl.

Didn't the article say he would be playing "a reoccurring character" rather than an actual companion? For all we know, he may only appear in episodes when the TARDIS lands on present day Earth.

Unless we take the SJA line about Ian & Barbara not aging, then Ian would still look younger than the Doctor.

Of course, then we would need a younger actor who looked like William Russell.

I for one have no problem disregarding that line if it means having William Russell back. But even if we are so inclined, there are ways of having an aged Ian without contradicting what was said on SJA.

I have disregarded the SJA line since it was uttered, because I love Ian's intro to The Crusade on the videotape. :)

Yeah, which is why I made judicious use of the question mark :) We'll have to wait and see I guess

Even though she's been on the show a year now, it DOES still feel as if Clara is new and we're just getting to know her, yeah. I would prefer that she and Capaldi's Doc be given some time to grow together as a team before a new companion is thrown in, but it all depends on how it plays out, how this guy is introduced, etc.

Also, like I said awhile ago....it's almost like they're rebooting the show, All that's missing is Susan.

Well, there is always Jenny still out there. ;)

DALEK IN PIN it must mean something, dammit!

DALEK INNIP (Dalek Innit?) I'm on to you Moffat!

It's entirely possible that he's meant to fill the same role as Ian, and (initially) Harry Sullivan in the show. A character who can handle the action scenes for an older Doctor.

I can see two reasons for that feeling.

First, Clara wasn't a character in series 7. She was a walking plot point, so she wasn't really developed as a character. Instead, she was developed as a mystery for the Doctor to solve.

And second, Moffat's era in general feels smaller than it has been because the arc elements of his stories are more significant than similar elements were in RTD's era.

In total, I think it's been 11 episodes for Clara, right? That's why she still feels new. It hasn't really been a full season for her yet.

^ One problem with your theory, Moffat's era doesn't feel smaller! :p

It does to me. It seemed like Matt had barely started when he was already leaving. *shrug*

Yeah, it did seem like his time just flew by.

Feeling "smaller" versus flying by can mean two entirely different things!

I'd agree that I enjoyed his time so much that it seemed to fly by. But, wouldn't agree that it felt smaller.
