A Journey

Disaster - I like this episode alot, despite what happens to Data. See, electrocution, even in movies and tv, scares the friggin crap out of me. But there's something about how they handle it in Trek that makes it easier to bear. No one twitches like crazy or screams, and they definitely don't show skeletons. Makes it a little easier. Anyways, the scenes with Worf and Keiko are GREAT!

The Game - This is a very interesting episode. Sucks majorly that Data was put out of commission so fast but his comeback at the end is great. I did hear, however (I believe it is mentioned on Memory Alpha), that Brent Spiner had another role in this episode as a random blueshirt playing the game near Wesley and Robin's table in ten forward that you can see after O'Brien walks by. Really gets to be kinda creepy when everyone's after Wesley to play it. Still great though.

Unification pt 1 - I was almost unaware how close this two parter is to Redemption. Anyway, so many great parts in this episode, but I particularly LOVE the scene between Picard and Data in the sleeping quarters on the Klingon ship. Frickin HILARIOUS!

Didn't get to part 2 yet cuz I gotta go to bed... stupid 9am class.....

Haha, yeah, Data just stands there and watches Picard sleep. Hilarious.

Sorry it took so long to get these up but I wanted to finish Violations before putting up the reviews for the episodes on this disc and I didn't get around to it till just now.

Unification pt 2 - Great finish. My particular favorite scene was where they used holograms to fool the Romulans ("I don't think you got Commander Riker's hair quite right." ROFLMAO!!!) And then Data uses the Vulcan Neck Pinch on Sela! As I pointed out in the last review, this is really close to Redemption, where Sela is introduced... They must not have been able to get Denise Crosby for very long since Sela's pretty much done after this.

A Matter of Time - I freakin love this episode! The time travel dude is hilarious! Also, it has my most favorite Trek line of all: "I assume your handprint will open this door, whether you are conscious or not." HAHA! Can you say... PWNED?

New Ground - This is a nice little episode. Also nice that Alexander improves afterwards... I don't like him being all disobedient like that.

Hero Worship - THIS IS MY ALL TIME MOST FAVORITE EPISODE OF STAR TREK! Just watching Timothy and Data interact with each other is great! I love the discussions they have together (particularly the one in Ten Forward). Also, the solution at the end and Data's suggestion to drop the shields is a great scene. Picard looks back at Data like "Are you kidding?" and Data's got this look on his face that says "Do I LOOK like I'm kidding?" EXCELLENT episode!

Violations - This is a weird, creepy episode. I didn't like it very much.

I need to get busy with season five. I have Monday and Tuesday off from work, maybe I can get a couple of DVDs then. :)

The Masterpiece Society - Figuring out how to move the stellar core fragment: ok. Scenes between Troi and Connor: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Conundrum - I like this episode! Very interesting! Really funny at times, too! Poor Riker at the end, though! LOL!

Power Play - Another great episode, though I really don't like it when Data is taken over by some entity that makes him behave out of character. I hated Schizoid Man for that reason. It's still a good episode overall though.

Ethics - Now, if Alexander had tried doing that Klingon death thing where they hold open the eyes of the dead guy and roar, THAT would've been a tear jerker. I'm glad Worf's ok.

The Outcast - What... the... fuck? :wtf:

Cause and Effect - This episode brought to you by the number three... LOL! Anyways, I think this is the first episode I ever took an active interest in watching... around February of last year I was looking for Star Trek clips on youtube just to see what it was all about and if it would interest me at all and ran across this episode. After the teaser I was like "WTF???" so I HAD to figure out what happened. And the rest, is history.

The First Duty - Never seen this before. Locarno is an asshole, but at least he took full responsibility at the end.

Cost of Living - Another great Lwaxana episode. LOL at the end with the wedding and the mud bath. Nice to see senior officers (Geordi and Data) using the utility uniforms in the Jeffries tube.

The Perfect Mate - I really liked the scene with that girl and Data in Ten Forward dealing with the guys at the bar. HILARIOUS! Awesome to see that Data was actually able to get what was going on when the guys suggested he go help with the replicator.

Imaginary Friend - Umm... Interesting. I did like the scene between Data and Guinan discussing cloud shapes. ("Besides, it is clearly a bunny rabbit." ROFLMAO!)

I Borg - Nice episode. Not wise to get attached to the Borg, though.

The Next Phase - A REALLY interesting idea. And I liked what Data had to say about his friendship with Geordi. Very touching. I'm glad everything's ok.

I’m embarrassing myself by not posting in this thread, so I promise to watch some TNG this weekend.

I have just finished typing up most of my reviews. I've got one or two to type up and so by Thursday or Friday I'll post my reviews for Clues through Redemption I. Then I'll get started on the first half of season five which I've already watched but haven't sat down to collect my thoughts and put them into words.

I've been watching season five and have to write up some reviews myself.

Also, you folks might have noticed I'm not a moderator anymore and Holdfast is the new mod in here now. I would caution everyone not to upset Holdfast or he might make everyone wear those man dresses from season one.

No way, I only just recovered from my last bout of hysterical blindness from when we tried that before... :(

Thanks spider - not being a mod here doesn't excuse you from watching TNG though. :D

Clues- A-, 3.5 stars ou of 4.

This is one of my favorites from season four. I always thought TNG excelled at these sorts of stories.

I enjoyed Guinan stepping into the realm of Dixon Hill with her playful garter snapping and Data's piping the comm into the phone in order to not be disruptive. That is very much the sort of thing Data would do.

I liked how the episode started out as another routine survey until the camera pans out to see everyone unconscious. Very effective teaser. It definitely piqued my curiosity as to what was really going on.

I also liked how the show continued for a while as nothing was wrong with the crew returning to their duties. Once again Beverly, like in "Remember Me" and "Cause and Effect", is the first to suspect something is amiss. The gradual discovery of unexplained clues(the moss, Troi's fright, Worf's wrist) made for intriguing and unsettling moments that only drew me into the story as I pondered what happened and what was Data's role.

The crew took smart sensible steps to confirm their suspicions such as Beverly checking the biological cycle of the crewmen to Geordi examining the ship's chronometer.

I especially liked the way the crew treated Data as a possible threat excluding him. The hallmark of a great script are the little touches. I appreciated that the writers remembered little things like the lack of beard growth something that slipped my mind.

I liked the way the story used flashbacks towards the end to pull the fragmented clues together and show us an interesting replay of what really occurred in that missing day sort of like LOST. The idea of a stalemate was a fresh idea. I loved the original twist that Data was ordered to lie to the crew by Picard himself. I did not see that coming and floored me. Brent did a good job with Data steering the crew away from what really happened. I also enjoyed the Data/LaForge moment in engineering as Geordi is uncomfortable being the one to incriminate his friend. I liked seeing Alyssa.

A very strong mystery.

First Contact- A-, 3,5 stars

I've come to appreciate this one more as time has gone on. I liked how the real stars of the show are the guest stars as the show chose to place the focus on the Malcorians which was surprisingly effective. I especially enjoyed Durken and Mirasta. I loved the scene of her first laying eyes on her homeworld. It was awe-inspiring and moving.

It is a neat contrast to what we saw on ENT between the Vulcans/humans where humanity was cast in the Malcorians role and the Vulcans in the Federation role. The show did a surprisingly good job in creating a rather fleshed out society and presenting a broad range of perspectives given it was only an hour long. Durken and Picard seemed like kindred spirits and their interactions were highlights.

The one thing that hurt it was the out of place in terms of tone was Riker being propositioned by Bebe Neuwirth. I didn't find it funny and it hurt the drama the show had built up.

Galaxy's Child- B-, 2.5 stars

I don't have a lot to say about this one. It is pretty average. I enjoyed the B story with the alien lifeform especially with the crew's blame and recriminations more than the A plot. I've never been particularly crazy about Trek's romances.

Night Terrors- A-, 3.5 stars

This is another of those high concept mysteries I enjoyed quite a bit that boasted a tantalizing mystery of what went occurred onboard the Brattain. It had a wonderfully creepy atmosphere. The music stood out as atypical for TNG and was eerily appropriate. The whole mood created was quite effective. The episode captured the feel of a ship adrift at the far edge of unknown space.

Other moments that contributed to the mood and that I enjoyed were the young ensign talking to O'Brien about the old man riding the turbolift in engineering, the unsettling moment as the young ensign hears something on the Brattain and Geordi reassures him, the snakes under the sheets in Riker's bed and the shot of Beverly alone amidst all the corpses as they bolted up.

There were some nice character moments. Picard's story of his grandfather's senility reinforces the strong fear Picard had for the loss of his mind in this situation but coming off the heels of his recent assimilation only increases the concern he must be experiencing. It was unintentional but I appreciated nonetheless in that it adds to All Good Things and his Irumodic Syndrome. Stewart gave a great performance with his frailty and exhaustion. Even when he cowers in the turbolift he does it with dignity. Brent was great and I loved the contrast between his android nature and the vulnerability of his human shipmates. I also loved the way the episode ended with Data ordering the captain to bed.

In fact, the whole cast did a great job. Riker snapping like an irritable child as he is ordered to bed. Worf as a Klingon warrior feeling helpless to fight this threat without form.

I loved Guinan whipping out her gun to regain control in Ten Forward. It was nicely graphic in its depiction of the violence. I loved how the idea of REM deprivation explained the crew's odd behavior and I thought the riddle of hydrogen was clever and the idea of alien communication through dream frequencies was fresh. I appreciated the continuity of utilizing the defelector dish from The Best of Both Worlds.

The shots of the binary stars were nice and I especially liked the way the light struck the lens. I enjoyed seeing another ship and bridge even if a redress.

Now this is gonna be tricky. I've watched up to A Fistful of Datas, and neglected to write anything down for episodes past Realm of Fear, so I gotta dig through my memory to come up with something.

The Inner Light - Really awesome episode. Great idea. And I've tried learning that song on my recorder but the sheet music I found is different from what Picard plays.

Time's Arrow pt 1 - Part one of my most favorite two parter! This is a great episode! And Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) is in it, which is awesome, because my high school was named after him. One thing I particularly found touching is how the whole crew is uber concerned over finding Data's disembodied head in a cave, and determined to not let that happen again.

SEASON SIX

Time's Arrow pt 2 - A great finish! Samuel Clemens is funny! Nice to see how Guinan and Picard met.

Realm of Fear - One of the best Barclay episodes, IMO. Barclay's frickin hilarious.

Man of the People - That's the one with the dude who's dumping emotions into Deanna, right? Yeah, anyways, I liked the scene where she came into Ten Forward. She's basically turned into a gray haired psycho-bitch wearing very suggestive clothing... and all Data can say is "Counselor Troi has altered her appearance?" ROFLMAO!!! :guffaw:

Relics - "It is green." Need I say more? This is a pretty good episode and basically all I know about Scotty comes from here.

Schisms - Quite an interesting concept.

True-Q - I don't remember anything particularly standout about this episode. Probably one of the blander Q episodes out there.

Rascals - OMG this episode is funny!!! Seeing them as kids is great! Picard is so funny when he whines to the Ferengi guard to go see his "dad," and when he gets to the bridge and hugs Riker, Riker's all like "WTF?"

A Fistful of Datas - A whole lot of Data in this episode, but again I'm not a big fan of Data episodes where he behaves uber differently... However, I do like his random switching to a southern accent. So, Data portraying evil cowboys in the holodeck = meh, though I gotta admit seeing him dressed as Miss Annie is hilarious. Data outside the holodeck randomly speaking in a southern accent = LOL! The episode is very good overall.

Now I just gotta get my rear in gear again and start watching more episodes! It's been a month almost!

OK, I have to finish up season five and get caught up with yall before the new mods try to close my thread down. I'll watch some tomorrow and write up the reviews on Sunday. Really. This time I mean it.

^ Although I don't contribute to it much, I really enjoy this thread. Why would the new mods close it down?? :(

The Game – C

Other than a cute and young Ashley Judd to look at, there isn't a lot about this I like. It wasn’t particularly bad episode, it just wasn’t very interesting. I remember my reaction to it back in 1991 (barely) that it was a not so subtle take on computer gaming not written well.

Unification, Part I – A-

A bittersweet ending for Sarek and Mark Lenard’s involvement with Star Trek. Lenard puts on a great performance in his final scene. Stewart and Lenard were always good together as Picard and Sarek. This two parter is a good example of why the TV episodes were always better than the movies. Imagine this as a movie with a much bigger budget and you would have a hit. Picard trying to sleep with Data staring at him is always funny to see again.

Unification, Part II – A

A great conclusion. Spock’s scenes with both Picard and Data were wonderful, and frankly better written than some of the stuff we got from the movies. I hate to keep harping on that, but for me I’ve always enjoyed the TV episodes more than any of the movies. The Romulan intrigue was interesting and makes me wish they’d have used the Romulans more often. I felt the use of Sela in this was a tad arbitrary, but it didn’t distract from an otherwise excellent episode. The final scene with Picard and Spock was touching.

A Matter of Time – C-

I just didn’t like the character of Rasmussen, he was irritating in a badly written and badly acted sort of way. The vilified Berman shows his writing inconsistencies with this mediocre episode after having helped write the wonderful Unification two parter.

New Ground – D+

Yech. Alexander comes aboard. I was dreading watching this episode in a Lwaxana Troi sort of way, and my dread wasn’t misplaced. This is just not a good episode. I think the writers were running out of ideas at this point.

Violations – C-

Oops, another episode I didn’t like. I’ll be glad when I get to the second half of season five because there are some outstanding episodes there. I’m not a big fan of the mind reading plot device as I don’t believe it will ever be possible, even in the Trekkian future. Sensing a range of emotions like Troi can do seems possible, but actual reading of memories just isn’t something I see as possible. This is not an episode I'll probably watch again. The idea behind this episode, that history can be enhanced by keeping records of memories along with actual events is an intriguing one. To bad it wasn’t executed well.

I actually enjoyed The Game. I'd give it a B or three stars out of four stars.
I liked hearing about Wesley's time at the Academy whether his dinner scene with Picard which was gold or his chat with Data in the corridor or all of his interactions with Lefler. I also enjoyed the intriguing scene where Troi describes the pleasure of a chocolate sundae.

I also liked the creepy body-snatcher aspect of the episode. The reveal with Picard after Wes left picking up the game and the realization he was hooked. Data's deactivation and damage to his circuits by his friends was unsettling. I also found some of the Beverly/Wes subtext a little uncomfortable if you know what I mean.

I also found the action and chase after Wes too be tense and exciting. I loved all of Wes' precautions and escapes. I enjoyed this Braga episode.
Unification, Part I – A-

Agreed. It was a fitting exit for Sarek and Lenard.

I remember this was the only episode that was promoted months before the episode aired. So I was disappointed and surprised though that Spock was in it for a few seconds.

I tought Part I succeeded on the isolated scenes such as Riker pimping out Troi to the Zakdorn to get answers about the missing ship or Picard not giving the Klingon the satisfaction of seeing him complain about the sparse quarters he and Data were given. Or Data staring eerily at Picard as he tried to sleep. I give it an A- or 3.5 stars too.

I know many felt Part II was a disappointment including Michael Piller describing it as too talky but I enjoyed it. The Data/Spock scenes, the Picard/Spock scenes, Sela/Spock banter. I give it a B+ or 3.5 stars.

A Matter of Time – C-

This is one of those simply okay episodes--not good, not bad. I'd give it a C+ or 2.5 stars.
New Ground – D+

Yech. Alexander comes aboard. I was dreading watching this episode in a Lwaxana Troi sort of way, and my dread wasn’t misplaced. This is just not a good episode. I think the writers were running out of ideas at this point.

I actually like New Ground. I give it three stars or a B. I always liked Alexander and I enjoyed seeing the difficulty in the father/son relationship. Everything felt natural including the school environment. The teacher was well cast. Troi was put to good use. I also liked seeing Worf struggle with being a parent and juggling his responsibilities. And I liked seeing Helena. She's a hoot. And the jeopardy and action at the end was decent.

You skipped "Hero Worship". I'd give it three stars. I loved the Data/Timothy interactions and the way each saw something in the other that was lacking in themselves. I must admit that when I first saw this episode I was going through a TNG love phase and was going overboard role-playing and it just so happened I was into Data. So I could relate to Timothy styling his hair like Data or wearing a similar tunic and trying to perfect Brent's android idiosyncrasies.

I found the mystery of what happened on the ship intriguing and Tim's survivor guilt rang true. Again like many episodes this season Troi was used effectively. The Geordi/Data scene in Engineering was also solid. I also remember how this episode answered something I always wondered about--you can't just accidentally touch the flat panels you have to enter an access code. The visuals were also very nice and stood out.
Violations – C-

Oops, another episode I didn’t like.
Shame on you:p I like this one too. I know some had a problem with the reveal of the attacker upfront but for me it didn't minimize my enjoyment.

I found it quite creepy especially the Crusher nightmare. I can't think of anything quite as disturbing as visiting a morgue or funeral home to see a loved one and then to have it twisted by Jev. Brrr.

I loved the banter at the dinner with Worf's "Klingons don't like to be probed" or Beverly putting Picard on the spot about some of his memories. Leave it to a redhead to be so devious and one reason why I love her so much.

I might have liked the memories of Riker and Troi not to be so ambiguous but they still worked well. I loved seeing Dr. Martin and I loved Troi fighting back. And the flashes were filmed in a very jarring but interesting manner.

I give it a B+ or 3 stars. Oh and I love the aliens' wardrobe.:bolian:

Quality of Life - One hell of an interesting episode. Still find it unbelievable and yet incredibly awesome that Data would so blatantly defy an order for something he truly believed in, and as Picard pointed out, that was the most human decision he has ever made.

Chain of Command (I'll sum up the full two parter here) - First, let me start by saying that ADMIRAL NACHEYEV IS A BITCH AND CAPTAIN JELLICO IS A DOUCHEBAG!!!!!!! Now that that's out of the way, there are two things I like about Jellico: his tough attitude towards the Cardassians, especially when he told them about the mines he had just layed, and the fact that he made Data the first officer.

The torture scenes were pulled off expertly by Stewart. You could truly see how troubled Picard was. And I loved the last "THERE... ARE... FOUR... LIGHTS!" It's like Picard's saying a big 'ol "FUCK YOU, ASSHOLES!" to the Cardassians!

Also, Worf is afraid of bats? ROFL!!!

Ship in a Bottle - The last Moriarty episode, and probably one of the best, though I kinda started dozing off in the middle (Hey, it's 2am.) I'd seen it before anyway. I like how Data figured out they were still on the holodeck, and I wish I knew what that cube thing was called, since I've used it in a fanfic before as a means of storing large holodeck programs, though now I realize that the cube is really somewhat different. Should've just stuck with isolinear chips for my fic... Picard's nice little existential speech at the end was pretty interesting too.
