a JEDI question

I wish George Lucas would have paid LIAM NEESON whatever he wanted to add him at the end of the JEDI as well. I thoughu Liam was one of the best parts of 1-2-3, and seeing him at the end of JEDI would have been cool.

Rob

Wouldn't have made sense within the original trilogy. Luke would be "Who is that guy?", some ghost he never met.

And when it comes to seeing the future, Palpatine can't see everything (didn't know Vader would wind up a mangled half-a-man), and let's recall that he is a lying asshole through and through. Had he known about the twins, he would've sought them out...yeah, it's a big galaxy, but he controls most of the known systems.

^ Wel, obviously there was a connection between Vader and Luke's Dad. Vader was supposed to have killed him.
Bingo. It can be assumed the original idea was a straightforward revenge story: Luke has to defeat the man who killed his father.

I have to admit... part of me does kind of prefer the original idea.

I realize Vader being Luke's father is a huge, iconic thing-- and it certainly made for a shocking ending to ESB-- but in retrospect it also feels little contrived and soapy to me. And it was also the beginning of turning Vader into a tragic, sympathetic figure.

Personally I liked it better when Vader was just this dark, enigmatic, scary-ass villain who killed Luke's father.

Both paths have their merits.I like the fact he turned out to be his dad because when it was revealed (and i do so remember) the entire theatre gasped...the only time I have experienced that since was at the tricky part of the Sixth Sense...

Yeah, I'd truthfully say that I think Lucas's decision to make Vader Luke's father was one of the best calls he ever made with regards to the Star Wars franchise. It's a great, powerful moment that may have lost its impact now with familiarity and countless parodies, but it took the very foundation of the series and shook it epically. The inhuman, cyborg monster of the first movie is our plucky young hero's dad.

Didn't Lucas claim that oldBSG stole of its story ideas? Did he (lucas) have to change his plans due to these 'security' links he refers too?

rob

No, I don't think he said that at all.
There was a lawsuit by Lucas against BSG.

In 1978, Lucas sued the creators of Battlestar Galactica for its similarity to Star Wars, although the case was dismissed as having no merit in 1980 by a U.S. Federal judge.

Then again it was just a round and round for him. More Lucas lawsuit funnies

Didn't that have more to do with the special effects with BSG being a carbon copy of Star Wars? I'm not saying it makes sense, but I thought that is what it surrounded.

Depends on who you ask, it seems.

Dug up a bit more late last night: link

20th Century Fox, later joined by Lucasfilm Ltd., sued Universal Studios for copyright infringement of its Star Wars movie, citing 34 similarities between the two films.

George Lucas himself had seen the first three hours of Galactica and informed Variety that he did think that Galactica infringed on the prerogatives of Star Wars, but that since the property was owned by Fox, he couldn't be a party to the suit if he wanted to. However, according to Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas, 20th Century Fox initiated the first lawsuit at the urging of Star Wars creator George Lucas. One Universal executive remarked at the time that this was like the first Western movie ever made suing the second. One possible reason for the lawsuit was Universal's decision to release the premiere theatrically in Canada, the same summer 20th Century Fox had planned to rerelease Star Wars.

Some of this i do remember. But I swear, in my mind, there is a memory that someone suggested that story elements of Star Wars were also at play. Not sure which ones...but oh well..the fog of time claims another victim..

I think you're correct. Cause I remember clearly from reading various articles over the years about this that one of the issues was Fox/Lucas claiming that certain story points in BSG were lifted from Star Wars. One thing I remember being mentioned is the whole wise old mentor (Obi-Wan/Adama) turtoring the reckless young warrior (Luke/Apollo).

I actually have a memory about it being revealed that the cylons were reptillians life forms that became taken over by technology (the centurion). I also remember that it had been suggested that one of the writers/producers had been friends with Lucus along time ago, and had knowledge of things to come and put them in BSG...but this is all based on old memories (mine) from a time when I was known to drink a bit.

In essense..I WAS DRUNK!

Because everybody knows starwars was the first story to have that.

Damn straight!!!

.
Also, I think Padme set feminism back several decades with the whole "losing the will to live" nonsense right after she's given birth to twins. Not like they might like having a mom around or anything...but hey, she did lose her boyfriend....you know, the psycho one whom she married even after he ranted to her about killing women & children...

I always assumed that Palpatine killed her using esoteric Force powers. Vader was already planning to kill him and give his throne to Padme, Palps had to see that as long as she was alive Vader's betrayl was inevitable. And Vader did become much more loyal afterward.

She died because the Polis Massans (mouthless aliens) had the worst doctors and doctor robots in the civilized galaxy.

Droid: "We can't find anything wrong with her."

Bail Organa: "I can't believe that."

Droid: "TRY AND SUE US, JIMMY SMITS! OUR OWNERS HAVE NO MOUTHS AND CAN'T TESTIFY!"

I always assumed she died from complications of having her windpipe crushed by her husband.

That's how she should have died.

Medical Droid said:
"Medically, she is completely healthy. For reasons we can't explain, we are losing her."
Medical Droid said:
"We don't know why. She has lost the will to live. We need to operate quickly if we are to save the babies. "
