Just be glad Zimmerman and Drexler convinced the producers to let them modify the Akira into the NX... those crazy suits were planning on using it as-is.

Yeah, hilarious in that every Trek forum would have been aflame with criticism. No make that with anger and frustration towards Paramount.
It would have been ridiculous! There is just no way that two different ships would look exactly the same about 200 years apart, especially a ship like the Akira, which apparently is specialized for acting as a mobile torpedo launcher platform, not for exploration!
It would have made canon problems of the past look like little blips on the radar in comparison! Crazy doesn't quite describe those suits! They were absolutely insane!
it wouldn't be two different ships, though. just like starfleet pulled a bunch of older miranda class vessels into emergency service against the borg, dominion, etc. they pulled the antique akira spaceframes from the museum and re-outfitted them with heavy weaponry. IT ALL MAKES SENSE IN CANONVILLE.

That would be even sillier... that'd be like sending the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria to the Persian Gulf, along with a Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier... yeah... I'm sure they'll do tons of damage to the enemy...

It actually makes no sense at all, because the Akira has modern feature, such as phaser arrays, modern navigational deflector, etc. There is just no way she could be passed off as an antique vessel. At the earliest, going by her registry, I would have to say she was commissioned in the 2350's. Most certainly not in the 2150's. That is besides the fact that the Akira is a pretty big vessel.
