A Disappointing Season for Science Fiction

Like Dorian I have to give a shout out to Supernatural. Not only do I think this has been a great year for it, its up across the board in the ratings. Every episode but one has had higher ratings then the same time last year, its the only show on Thursdays that has seen such growth 7 out of 8 weeks, and it the only Sci/fi fantasy show on the 5 networks that is up period versus its year ago numbers.

Since Futurama keeps being produced on DVD (not sure if it will continue?), we should count it in the mix as well. It's as good as ever, even though I think the one hour format works better than two.

^^
Futurama is slated to produce four DVD movies--two of which have been released, and one which is about to be released. That leaves one more. Who knows if more will be made after that.

And surely you mean the 30 (22) minute format vs. the 90 minute format?

Well personally I'm still finding plenty of genre shows that are keeping me entertained, so I'm not complaining.

  1. Heroes
  2. Merlin
  3. Doctor Who
  4. Torchwood
  5. Pushing Daisies
  6. Chuck
  7. Terminator
  8. Lost
  9. Sanctuary
plus a few others

and

  1. Apparitions
  2. Survivors
  3. The Prisoner
  4. Superpower
  5. Defying Gravity
  6. Clone
  7. Being Human
  8. Phoo Action
  9. Crooked House
and various others all coming up, I'm confident there'll be plenty to enjoy.

If you ever rewatch your old childhood favorites, you may find them a bit cheesy, but you still enjoy them because they're yours. You may even wonder "why they don't make kids' shows like this anymore." Certainly most of what passes for children's entertainment today is pretty much tripe from an adult perspective.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is the exception to this rule. It's like watching an old favorite.....except you've never seen it before! It's really an awesome feeling, like being a kid again.

Interesting first post because I am not disappointed at all. I am enjoying this season's sci fi offerings. Still watching Atlantis as it draws to a close. Watching Terminator and enjoying that. Enjoying Fringe, it's been a big surprise for me and the big ratings are even a bigger surprise. I have also been enjoying Sanctuary, its not great yet but its not bad either.

Of the big shows you mention like Lost and Heroes, well I watch neither of them anyway :)

I was far more upset in previous years. 2005-2007 were especially bad. Shows getting canned like Threshold before it had a chance, shows like Enterprise getting the ax a season or two early. Jericho, Moonlight, Invasion, the list goes on- all shows they didn't give much of a chance to succeed. These days things have much improved.

I am fairly happy right now-my DVR gets a work-out. I think I'm happiest with Life On Mars-there's an underlying sweetness to the stories that keeps me fascinated.

Fringe-eh, its ok. Same goes for Sanctuary.

I am still fascinated with Heroes despite some stupid writing creeping into the mix-I agree, let's kill off a few people.

Miss Lost, Eureka and BSG.

SG-Atlantis is what it is-and like someone else posted-an hour of Rodney is an hour well spent.

Sarah Connor, despite its "go nowhere" ongoing plotline, is pretty intense. Although the timetravelers from the future don't act nearly mesmerized enough about the intact "now". It throws me out of the story sometimes.
Miss Torchwood.

Been having a great time with Primeval. Highly recommend.

I feel like Fringe, Sancutary, and Eleventh Hour have all been entertaining, so to me its been a good TV season.

That's because of the shitty economy, not because TV is suddenly doing anything right. Networks are afraid to cancel anything and lose ad revenues that won't necessarily be replaced because there's no guarantee the advertisers will like whatever they come up with next any better.

Stuff like Life and Knight Rider should be history by now. It's really amazing how lenient the nets have been. It's a good year to be the fan of a bubble show (except for Pushing Daisies :().
