A Different Voyager?

No offense meant to Voyager fans, but I never was one – neither a fan of the show nor the ship. The engines just seemed to be way too small in relation to the rest of the ship. And the whole "rotating" thing I thought was just silly. Though I would have opted for an engine design that was unique to this starship, the Ent E's config is most demonstrative of what I would have like to see.

I really liked the Intrepid Class of ship. I think that it represents a culmination of Starfleet demands/desires.

Great shot, neoworx! Definitely an improvement.

I agree with earlier posts that Voyager definitely had a lot of potential that never made onscreen, both visually and dramatically, but the result in & of itself wasn't that bad. However, many of us probably tend to expect the nacelle proportions of the original E. So here's a sketch of an Intrepid-class 'refit' with Prometheus nacelles & pylons:

For another, here's Markus Nee's model of an Intrepid with EntD nacelles:

Kinda reminds me of the Titan contest, where our own Praetor had originally considered merging the Intrepid and Prometheus designs: http://fav.me/d1ts3km<br>

Would it perhaps have been better with the nacelles facing downward? Would that have to be balanced by adding a pod to the top reminiscent of the Nebula class?

I put some quality time (yes :guffaw:yes!) in thinking about what could be improved on the Intrepid class. I believe a possible improvement is to lengthen the secondary hull by 21 meters. Just making the nacelles longer is not enough to balance primary and secondary hull. A relative stretch gives a nicer flow down to the rear.

I cant show much yet, but here is a black/white sideview of the idea, that I hope to continue in 3D in february.

Ya know, the more I look at it over the years, the less I like the Ent-E nacelle design. It set a precedent for what is basically a coffin shaped box that has been stretched and painted red, white and blue.

I always loved Sternbach's design for the Voyager. But if I was forced to change something, I'd probably cut the saucer shorter, make the engineering section a little bit bigger, extend the warp coils and move them up a bit.

Here's a quick mock-up in Photoshop ...

This is adorable.

Using something more like the Nova-class...

... might have been interesting, especially because it's so small.

EDIT:

And a small ship would presumably have been less "powerful" than Voyager.

One of the things I like about Moya on Farscape and Serenity on Firefly is that those ships weren't "powerful" and didn't even have basic weapons. Instead, their defense was speed... and the cleverness of the crews.

It would've been interesting if Voyager was an older workhorse -- say, even a Constellation-class -- that had the main advantage of speed -- maybe she's an old high-speed courier vessel, for example, or a testbed for a new drive system.

I even kind of wish that the Maquis had been using an old Starfleet vessel stolen from a surplus depot (like those seen in TNG), and that their old ship survived the pilot episode, not the brand new vessel used by the Starfleet crew. This old bucket would have been stripped of things like Starfleet weapons, so the Maquis had made their own modifications, including a speedy engine.

Anyway, just my two cents.

Perhaps an old Constitution class, one of the original 12 from TOS days, stolen from a museum...

And the shiney new ship sent to pursue them in the Badlands is the one that gets whacked, because it's fancy gadgetry is so fragile ("the more you over-think the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain",) so Janeway has to change her ships, take command, put on a skimpy TOS uniform, combine the crews, and head for home.

It did occur to me that an old, stolen Connie refit might've been interesting to use.

I still think something along more of the "Shark Fin" design (on the pages noted) would have been interesting.

(Well, except for the one where the radiator side 'fins' rotate out... *yech*)

At first I hated Voyager's design for it's lack of neck and stretched out saucer section, but it's really grown on me. My biggest gripe with the design is the proportions of the warp nacelles, as others have mentioned. When you look at the ship from top down, it looks front heavy, and disproportionate.

I thought it would look good with the Enterprise E's nacelles, but the more I look at it, I don't like it as much as I expected. The nacelle design doesn't really fit with Voyager, and it doesn't look right with the pivoting nacelle pylons. It doesn't seem like the pivot idea is all that popular, but I thought it was a nice gimmick that set Voyager apart, rather than just being an ugly duckling version of the Enterprise.

I'd probably give it new unique nacelles that were larger and extended further back, and maybe remove some of the big box window openings to give it a sleeker appearance. Other than that, I mostly like it as is.

I was just breezing through this when I realized I had done something similar some months back. I had attempted a little voyager redesign (NOT a refit) based on some similar shape psychology.

At least, that's what it STARTED as. Then I went to wackyland with lens flares and glowing blue stuff and... well, I apparently ended up with something called the "USS Prototype." Boy, do I know how to name 'em.

Here's the image. Have at it!

I suppose there's some constitution in there, as well as a little reliant. Hm... Now that I look at it I think I like the shorter nacelles better. And what was I thinking with that cut in the saucer (aft of the bridge)? Oy vey.

Cheers!
