A critical look at TMP set design…

I could have survived without Kirk's, Sulu's, Uhura's or Chekov's bare arms. They showcase Kirk in the blue-white uniform, then they saddle him with a lame mental-institution white-pastel short-sleeved disaster. FTW?
Why? I thought they all looked pretty buff back then. Shatner never looked that fit afterward.

I’ve always thought of the short sleeve as a 23rd century polo shirt. Thought it looked fine. Agree that The Shat was probably in his best shape ever in this film.

Sad that Nick Meyer essentially ignored most of the Starfleet and alien costumes, keeping only things like the engineering radiation suits, the spacesuits and redying the one-piece jumpsuits to create cadet uniforms.
He kept the medical uniforms from TMP too, Bones simply wears the green turtleneck under the existing outfit.

Good point. Same coat.

They added the sleeve "tenure" details for TWOK, but also left the TMP shoulder tabs.

Yep. Also changed the embroidered Caduceus for a metal one.

Majel Barrett's medical costume was also altered to match, even though she pulled her participation as Chapel in ST II. There is another medical extra wearing her costume. (It went to auction still with Majel's name tag.)

On the subject of Persis Khambatta's outfit, I would question the shoes! Who gets out of the shower and puts on shoes that needs to be rubbed a bit to be properly put on?!

They were "spray 'n' wear" like everything else. What is not explained is how heeled footwear can be sprayed onto bare feet that were flat on the floor of the sonic shower.

I assume that was in protest of Roddenberry being shunted to the side for what became TWOK?

Yes, Majel actually sent our Sydney-based fan club a letter at the time, saying she was supporting GR after he had been reduced to Creative Consultant.

She was personally invited back by Director Nimoy on ST IV.
