Headcanon: I think the Tardis is like a mood ring and its outside shape somehow reflects its emotions tied to that particular incarnation of the Doctor.

True, but those were all digital and in motion for a short period of time. This case is with a physical set which may or may not be in more than one scene.They didn't go to the trouble of making 13 different looking TARDII in the Day Of The Doctor, though they did do 3 different ones for the end.
I guess the Chameleon Circuit™ works a little, whenever the TARDIS wants it to.
