Spoilers A big hint about the finale/season 3 has dropped...

See the link here:

Basically, inside sources involved with production have said the show will have a time jump. However, the time jump is not to the Calypso future 1,000 years hence, but "only" 500 years in the future - in the 28th century.

Edit: I still don't understand how to square this with Georgiou staying on the show - unless she becomes main cast for the third season, and this is just a one-season diversion. Maybe Section 31 still exists in the 28th century, and for some reason they decide to hire her?

Wonderful news  I always wanted a new Trek show happening in this time period.

What does that mean for this forum, as the show is listed as a 23rd century show?

"mmmmmm the daytime of the night!" -Flight of the Conchords

Maybe, but going in the same direction, and with the Abrams moves all but over, Pike and crew would make a damn fine series of movies, and finally be a way for Paramont and CBS to integrate their interests.

Maybe the Pike series would make the jump to movies if it were successful? I just can't see a Pike movie happening in the same timeline until the 2 companies merge.

And for everyone of you, there's another who would disagree. Such is the nature of Star Trek fans... they all want their Star Trek, but can't agree on what that Star Trek is.

Which is why they have different options now. "I miss TOS!", "I miss TNG/DS9/VOY!", and "I want the Far Future!" will now all be covered. If they want 13-episode seasons to cover the entire year, the divisions in fandom made things simple: Just give one show to each faction. Problem solved.

From the article:

Well, no shit. If they can't do justice to established canon why even bother to try? I get it that maybe that's what Fuller wanted in the first place. Spend a season in each timeline, don't muck up events too much so as not to anger the fans. So if this is finally where they are all going anyway, then why was Fuller fired in the first place?

Fuller was fired because he clashed with the suits at CBS and also had conflicting priorities with American Gods. One thing that's consistent with Bryan Fuller is he clashes with the people above him and gets fired on every show he's developed except for Hannibal.

I could be interested in a time jump, but when I think back on Discovery so far, my favorite parts -- Pike, the Talosians, Spock, Mudd -- have been borrowed from TOS. Maybe the time jump would be a great kick in the pants, but they'd be losing a crutch they've leaned on pretty heavily.

So what are the chances that in 28th century they can go a full season without focusing on the Klingons, Q and Borg? I hope they can, but I'm willing to place bets now :)

I dunno, somehow this doesn't sound interesting to me at all. Never much cared for when this is set or how it does or doesn't contradict the holy canon. I'll be happy if for once they manage to tell a coherent story arc for one season that isn't stupid. They've got great characters, actors, sets, ship designs, effects and music. But the writing leaves so much to be desired. I'm not convinced a time jump like that will be it.

The season has given the character a great arc - arguably the best to date
It did? Remind me again, what was/is that arc? I love Pike and Mount's portrayal, but I'm not sure they've been doing such a great job of giving him any kind of arc.

If that rumor is true, it doesn't mean that the series will remain then in the 28th century. I guess they will try to find a way back into the 23rd century and also manage to get back there.
Unless their disappearance is part of recorded history. Then the Federation of the 28th Century would try to stop them from returning.

This makes a ton of sense and I feel stupid for not anticipating it. Discovery can take the data into the future with it. No need to self destruct. Star Trek up through the early 25th century has become stereotyped: faster ships, fancy shields, bigger guns, alien enemy of the week.

This is a great way to get away from all that. I'm excited about the possibilities.

In addition, since 23rd century people are familiar to trekkies, the Disco crew will be a way to keep things grounded: "this is totally strange and new for them too"
