83rd Annual Academy Awards Show: Discussion/Commentary

Best Picture, <shrug> if they say so... deserving enough but not my pick by any means.

Cute singing at the end.

ETA: It would've been awesome if Toy Story 3 had managed to pull it off, just for the furor it would cause.

I am still angry about that. :klingon: But if she had to be beaten again at least it was Natalie who did it. It doesn't sting so bad this time.

Losing twice to that HACK Hilary Swank stung. This I can live with, because Portman actually deserved the award.

Wow, really? You don't like Swank? I love her. Have you seen Boys Don't Cry? She was amazing in that.

A good show imo. I liked Anne & James, thought they did a good job. And...it didn't run over. w00t!

Night all. :)

The only movie I have ever liked her in was Million Dollar Baby, and she did deserve the award for that. But I honestly don't think she's anything special.

And yes, I did see Boys Don't Cry. I was bored.

Thanks to everyone who participated this year. It was fun!

And the winners of the Nomination Game will be announced by tomorrow morning. It may be a few hours before I get it done so please be patient. I have been drinking so I am not sure how accurate things are going to be.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but I tuned in to some of the more interesting bits, I think. Some thoughts:

1. The Bob Hope thing was creepy, but it was worth it for the Billy Crystal intro and the banter between Downey and Law which makes me want to dig out my Sherlock Holmes blu-ray. Funny, though - Law can get away with making a Ricky Gervais joke at Downey's expense, but Ricky Gervais can't.

2. Someone cast Anne Hathaway in a musical. Now. I don't care if it's a remake of Annie.

3. I sense a flood of autotuned movie clips will arrive in Youtube before midnight if they haven't arrived already.

4. Let's face it - the in memoriam segments are hated universally because there's no way they can do them without pissing someone off. I turned the volume off when Dion started to sing, though frankly I was more turned off my the choice of song than the singer. The only time it ever worked was when they got Itzak Perlman to play some generic instrumental a few years back. I didn't mind that they left out a few people. I love the fact they included behind-the-scenes personnel.

5. The Charlie Sheen joke when Franco came out in drag was great. Almost worthy of Ricky Gervais!

6. I didn't much care for how the Oscar ceremony organizers undercut Hathaway and Franco's attempts to establish themselves as hosts by bringing on Crystal and (by proxy) Hope. It tended to magnify any shortcomings the newcomers had.

Alex

Definitely agreed with 2 and 6. Not that I disagree with the rest (Franco in drag... LOL), but those are standout points.

Good choices for best picture and best actor. As a genre fan, I'm a little disappointed that Fincher didn't win best director. I'm not so keen on "Alien 3" or "Curious Case...", but "Seven", "Fight Club" and "The Social Network" rule. It just sucks to see such a talented guy nominated without winning so many times. He's like the new Scorsese. I hate that Nolan never even gets nominated too. It's nice that his movies win technical awards and the people thank him when they win, but come on Academy, give Nolan himself an award!

This was one of the most tasteless Oscar telecasts with Kirk Douglas being exploited out there in wretched condition and 'state-of-the-art' technology being used to make dead Bob Hope say names of modern actors. Yuck. And the hosts were damn boring (great actors, but terrible hosts). At least the right movie won best picture. A lot of undeserving winners in recent years like "Crash", "The Hurt Locker", and "Million Dollar Baby". My two cents on Hilary Swank - she's overrated and "Million Dollar Baby" was melodramatic trash. "The Aviator", "Sideways", and "Finding Neverland" were all way better.

Oh god... I didn't even think about the swamp of autotune knock-offs, 23skidoo. I am going to have nightmares now.

Great. Sappy singing. Why can't they just end things with a quick bit of dialog after the last award. I have things to do.

So? Go do yer stuff

It's just a figure of speech. I would be happy to listen to the cute kids if they were presented in the middle. With the awards being so long already the number appeared tacked on and superfluous. The kids (and admittedly the audience) deserved better then that.

^ Graves died a few days after Corey Haim died. And it would be rather offensive for the Academy to include someone who was still alive in their memorandum. :p

I thought Hans Zimmer's 'Inception' score was vastly superior to 'The Social Network's,' but it was worth it to just for being able to hear "Academy Award winner, Trent Reznor." Although, I would have been equally pleased to hear "Academy Award nominees, Daft Punk." 'Tron Legacy' by itself was fun though not great, but it was hugely elevated by the amazing score and the VFX, both of which were snubbed by the Academy.

I only know Zachary Levi from Chuck, so when he came out singing, I couldn't help but think of the whole segment as a Chuck-style gag.
