800 lives???

Actually, one shuttle did get hit by a missile, the one behind Winnona's as it exited the shuttlebay. It's in the shot before you see the Kelvin shoot down a missile threatening her shuttle (and to stamp out any hint of favouritism there, the Kelvin was already shooting at missiles that had past it even as Winnona's shuttle left the bay).

So George almost saved 840 lives?!

Pike: "Your father saved 800 lives. He could have saved 840, but 800 is easier to say. I dare you to do better."
James T: "I'll do it. I'll save exactly 840 lives!"

:)

One could argue that there wouldn't have been any stragglers among the escaping shuttles. Nero was shooting the shuttles down, and Kirk was shooting down Nero's missiles to protect the shuttles. Any shuttle not among the group Kirk was protecting (the one with his wife and child) would have been likely to fall prey to Nero's missiles.
I'm not sure that Nero was intentionally shooting at the shuttles, I think the missiles' guidance systems just locked onto them as high heat sources and viable targets. Fortunately, it doesn't seem that any of the missiles actually hit those shuttles, so obviously George did a good enough job holding them off.

Nero is supposed to be the bad guy, so he was intentionally shooting at them.

No it didn't. Kelvin destroyed that missile just before impact, the shuttle slid up and over Winona's shuttle and remained intact. The explosion you see in the frame is the explosion of the missile itself, not the shuttle.

Really? I'll have to watch it again and check.

Seems so. OTOH, Nero was firing at the shuttles, and firing a lot, so it would be a bit strange if he didn't catch at least one or two.

Evacuating 800 people in those tiny shuttles would call for a degree of organizing that I don't see as possible in the circumstances. The "a hundred lives" interpretation would seem the easiest way out... It doesn't make George Kirk any less a hero, at least.

^ Well, come to think of it, Robau had already called for preparations to be made for an evacuation (he speaks either to someone on the bridge to his left, or into a comm unit on his chair) even before Ayel contacted them, so it's probable that at least some of the crew was getting prepped to get off the ship.

And while it may be hard to imagine 800 people fitting into 20 shuttles, those 20 shuttles do seem a fair bit bigger than the shuttles we've generally seen up to this point (except the TOS and Enterprise ones, they seemed fairly big).

He also said 800 "lives," not 800 "people."

Maybe the crew was only 400 people, but every one of them owned a puppy.
I just found the thread, and was about to make a similar hypothesis... that Pike is a PETA-level animal rights guy, and was counting the 500 or so Beagles that were miraculously (and super-cutely) saved from certain doom!

But seriously, the "800 lives" count has just got to include a whole lot of pretty small creatures (fully sentient birds, maybe?). Otherwise it makes no damn sense at all.

(and yeah, I know. Zombie thread. Run, hide and all that. Don't care. Sue me.)

If we insist on resurrecting zombie threads, let me just say that according to the Bluray, the Kelvin is 457m long, and thus easily has room for 800 crew in that gigantic saucer.

Now someone close this while I've got the last word!

If the NX-01, which was 70 years older than the Kelvin, was 225m long, there's absolutely no reason why the Kelvin can't be 457m long.

Sorry, Danny.;)

Agrees.:techman:

What I love the most is what funny stuff people pull out of their noses to explain things. "Well maybe he meant 200 humans, 200 midgets, 100 puppies and 299 birds and that one sentient Tamagotchi." The FUCK NO, he meant 800 people, for crying out loud! :guffaw:

*makes his best Alec Guinness impersonation* "But who is more foolish: The fool, or the one who follows him?"
