That was a lot of fun. I loved Ms Coleman and look forward to seeing her in the show full time. It will be interesting to see if she really is Clara here, or some relative in some way. I suppose if she is companion Clara, she could be ending up like River Song here but that strikes me too similar. The Doctor first meeting her at the end of her travels. Looking at the start just once through, she might be physically saved and a duplicate set of memories uploaded to the Dalek casing?
I've got a feeling that she'll appear as a variety of different characters, before formally becoming a companion in the Xmas Special. The mystery of why he's encountered multiple versions of her is likely to be one of the big reasons that The Doctor takes her as a companion in the first place. She will be the mystery for him to solve in the next series or two.
Rewatching, she said her name was Oswin Oswald. She may be a relation or someone else. I hope it's not another River type ending/first meeting. I don't expect Moffat to go for the same trick. Clara could be her mother, or she could be Clara's mom? Or they have nothing to do with each other, and the appearance is a red herring?

That felt like Doctor Who of old, not the convoluted "story arc" Doctor Who we've been getting for the last couple of years, but I had to go with good instead of excellent for one reason. The season ended with "Doctor Who", now the Season starts with "Doctor Who". Is "Doctor Who" going along the same theme of the words that shall not be named and will be that "Crack" theme this season? I thought that last bit was a little on the corney side (In the same vain as James Cromwell saying "So you guys are on some sort of Star Trek").

The girl reminded me of someone and she looked hot. I kept thinking (Mind you, other than reading there was going to be a new companion and seeing a picture) that she was the new companion and then they revealed the twist. I'm thinking she has a twin sister (Again, I don't even know the new companion's name and I haven't been in this forum at all for like a year) and that's how things come to be. Still, I actually grew to like her and didn't want "souffle" girl to die but man I am actually glad they answered the "How did you get the eggs" question.

It was a good start to the season, I enjoyed the character stuff between Amy and Rory (Even though the split should have happened on screen and agreed it did seem a bit out of character for both) and glad the show is back. We've got next week, and then the week after is the return of a great actor to sci fi TV. Forget the 50th anniversary and all that Doctor Who celebrations, bring on Ben Browder. It's only a shame they couldn't get Claudia Black on and have a little Farscape reunion. ;)

Please Mr Moffat. May we have another dalek story from you?

Was a bit let down by the lack of a new opening theme. Although the credits were nicely done. I'll have to mull over the new logo though.

It was rather nice not having the dalek fleet destroyed at the end of the episode for a change. It looks like they've returned to be a force to be reckoned with in the universe. to me thi is one of the few times they've seemed truly powerdul and dangerous enemies, as opposed to silly saltshakers rolling around and shouting at everything.

I so loved the characterizations in the story. Eleven being brave and serious for once instead of the usual bumbling party animal. And Amy displaying some depth and emotion beyond the standard cool wisecracker from the previous two seasons. Its so rare that she actually displays feelings for Rory. I was starting to wonder if she really did love him. I actually got a bit teary-eyed during their scene together on the planet.

And of course, Oswin was amazing. A 21st century version of Zoey. Cute and brilliant. It'll be interesting to see just how the new companion story plays out between now and Christmas.

My only question was who the heck chained down the asylum daleks, and why even bother, since it appears the average dalek can tear through them like tissue paper.

Forced references to the show's title are part of a tradition that goes back to An Unearthly Child.

BTW, I did get a Zoe vibe from Oswin. Glad I'm not the only one.

Absolutely LOVED!

Great twist, lots of Amy and Doctor, Daleks being used well, no complaints!

SAVE THE DALEKS also kind of gave me the chills!

Again, they ended the season with it, and then they started the season with it. It may be part of tradition but good things come in small packages.

Now, better questions would be how come nobody previously remembered (during the "all the Daleks are gone" days) that there's fucking millions of them over there, and how come the ones that supposedly were on Kembel, Spiridon, Vulcan, etc were RTD era Daleks and not the appropriate 60s and 70s versions which happened to be on set anyway...?
"Asylum" raises the question of what, exactly, the Doctor did during the Time War. Right now, it really looks like all he managed to do was to frag his own homeworld and a Dalek battlefleet nearby.

I had assumed that the Doctor had wiped both his people and the Daleks from history, and that the Asylum is just a function of the Daleks from "Victory of the Daleks" escaping back into the past and re-establishing the Daleks into history.

They also started last series with it. And at least the first Eccleston series, but I'm not sure how often between the two.

Is it played up too much? Yes, I agree. It's Moffat bringing back the Who in Doctor Who. He's fading to the background and being seen as more mysterious. But as long as it isn't literally every episode this series, I don't care that it's in episode one.

Doctor Who? is also a fairly important question in Moffat's overall arc so I'm not surprised to see it cropping up.

Doctor to Amy, in the teaser: "Make sure they (presumably the Daleks) remember who you are".

And it was said with a very strong emphasis.

I wonder what that was about, and where it's going?

Probably just along the lines of "if we're gonna die, make sure we're remembered".

And also a set-up line to what happens at the end.;)

Maybe she had to remind them that she was the Doctors best friend? We all know what the he does to beings who threaten the people he loves.

Kiddy book level storytelling to take the concept of Assimilation and loosing ones identity (almost exactly like Picard in BOBW) and explain it in broad strokes repeatedly. Except, where BOBW told all of that with a single tear, here we get the convoluted, plain as day "twist" at the end which makes no sense, the Daleks act in a manner which is completely unbecoming of them (Seriously? The cold calculating killers would now build monuments to themselves and "Love hate"? Oh come on) to force drama ("we're scared so we'll get the doctor easy as"). Again, the whole "human dalek" thing was a stupid way of representing the fact they are bad guys and Daleks to the lowest common denominator of viewer - why couldnt they just be brainwashed humans like in the Peter Cushing movies? Maybe not bother with the helmets, but they looked far less silly than growing eyestalks out of their foreheads and guns out of their hands. At least removing any kind of Dalek reference in the beginning would have made the reveal of the parliament of the daleks more impressive - as it stands opening with a shot of a 500ft high ("500 ft high!") Dalek statue kind of robs any subsequent Dalek reveal of any weight.

I enjoyed it, but these were pretty much my exact nits. When the eyestalk grew out of the head, I sighed in a not good way. When the laser gun grew out of the hand, looking like a crappy kit bash instead of something proper looking, I groaned.

Jenna Louise Coleman was alright when she was serious at the end. All her forced and blatant attempts at being super sassy with the cutsey names was annoying. It was like a repeat of Mels all over again. It's trying to hard to be "kewl" and it takes me out of the story. Enough with that shit.

And I could see a sort of meta joke with her playing a different character in one ep, then the companion later. A play on the idea that actors would show up, play a character, impress them enough to get a regular gig...this time it's done on purpose. See Freema.

We've seen enough takes on companions to know that at some point, one of them is going to be "the one who dies". If she is the same character, it would be an interesting and nice use of time travel. Meeting a companion when she dies. It's not quite the same with River as she's not really a regular.

Other than that, this was the first time since the Eccelston years that the Daleks didn't suck. I did like the return to the idea of them using slaves, because there's no way they can build shit without opposable thumbs. The Asylum was nicely done and the Daleks within awesomely creepy.

I rated the ep as "Good", but I was not as blown away by this starter as I was last season. Still, a solid start and I look forward to next weeks eps.

Holy freaking shit! I knew there was supposed to be some kind of surprise in this episode, but I didn't expect it would be Jenna Louise Coleman.

I never for a second thought we'd be seeing her THIS early. And she was certainly cute and charming enough (even if she spoke so damn fast I couldn't follow everything she said).

And the episode itself was pretty damn good too, with lots of great little twists and surprises. Especially loved the way the Doctor tricked Amy and Rory into making up, even though he had already saved her with his own bracelet-- that's the kind of simple but clever writing from Moffat I never get tired of.

I do have to say though.... I hope not every episode this season is going to be THIS crazy and fast-paced. As fun as these can definitely be, I'm not sure I'd want to see this style all season long.

Oh, and the heavily-yellowed title sequence was just.... weird.

Great start to the season. It took me a couple minutes to recognize the girl as Coleman, as my only exposure to her was in those few DW promotional shots, but when I did I was very pleasantly surprised.

I was also surprised when the women sprouted Dalek parts, and when Oswin turned out to have been a fully-converted Dalek the whole time.

I was looking for Classic Daleks the whole time, but I didn't really notice any. I really wanted to see the SWD.

A bit disappointed that the Daleks (all of them everywhere?) no longer know who the Doctor is. It's good to change things up though, I guess.

I thought the new opening sequence was ok, except for the title lettering. It looked terrible. But maybe it will warm up on me.

I liked the bit off 4th-wall breaking with Oswin looking at the camera when she said "Remember", even though that kind of thing isn't the show's style.

"DOC-TOR WHO?" I'm half "Awesome" and half *groan* over that. Yeah, it was amusing, but I think they went a bit Family Guy and let it go too long.

It had Dalek bumps, I think they're going to switch it with different episodes.

An evil part of me almost wants them to call him Doctor Who in every episode just to get people constantly upset.
