70's music

Here's one for your old (G-)man:

And from the same year, a couple of new kids on the charts in the closing months of the decade:

My teen years were the '80s, but I think more of my core listening is from the '70s. Something about the new directions artists were exploring after the '60s, and the reaction against established sounds, made for a lot of great music.

A beautiful little ballad from 1972:

Some perfected pop, also from '72:

A two-chord classic:

Of significant historical note--In the closing months of the decade, a new phenomenon emerges:

My sister had the 12" single shown in the video. I recall once having my Star Wars action figures perform part of the song....

A couple of other things that didn't sound like everything else on the radio in 1979:

(Baton-twirling 1979 Stevie is droolworthy.)

Some intra-decade covers:

Linda Ronstadt covering Warren Zevon (first time I ever heard a Syndrum):

Talking Heads covering Al Green:

Dave Edmunds covering Elvis Costello:

And here's Warren performing the song in a fairly raucous (and probably wasted) manner:

But speaking of intra-decade crossovers:

Bowie covering Springsteen:

I have to love me some Deep Purple

Not the biggest hit of the 70s but he did live on the other side of our street before he hit his fame.

I'd previously overlooked that one of my favorite Doors tunes gave its name to their 1971 album:

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Nxjc9NjMiE[/yt]

(The video was created in the '80s by the recently-departed Ray Manzarek.)

Also hailing from California (yeah, that's a lame-ass transition):

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTfkG3wrAEI[/yt]

And although most of their fans wouldn't have heard of them until at least '83:

Journey "Wheel in the Sky" 1978
I will never get tired of this song

Wolf Creek Pass

Wow. I haven't heard that song in going on 40 years, and as soon as it started to play I knew all the lyrics.

(The video was created in the '80s by the recently-departed Ray Manzarek.)

With John Doe of X playing the creep in the video.

Anyway, here are some big ones around my house growing up:

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6siRVk67Epw[/yt]

Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band (over half the video is Albert Lee tearing it up):

Hands down, one of the most beautiful women to ever walk the earth, and one of the greatest singing voices ever.

Last year, my daughter and a bunch of her friends saw Emmylou at a festival. My daughter said that all the boys were in love with her. They couldn't believe she was close to 70.

Speaking of country and speaking of intra-decade crossovers, here's Hank Jr doing a little Marshall Tucker:

The song likely helped him become mayor of Ouray Colorado which is near Wolf Creek Pass.

I did not know that! And it all started with bread commercials. Very pretty country, Ouray.

Hands down, one of the most beautiful women to ever walk the earth, and one of the greatest singing voices ever.

She's something. I see her any chance I get. The Harris/Ronstadt/Parton Trio album is one of my all-time favorite collaboration projects.

Some choice selections from 1970:

Is this the best song of 1970? For my money, yes it is.
