Here's one for your old (G-)man: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kg9LasvLFE[/yt] And from the same year, a couple of new kids on the charts in the closing months of the decade: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdl5_3HX8bU[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV8Ss8EDyBI[/yt]
My teen years were the '80s, but I think more of my core listening is from the '70s. Something about the new directions artists were exploring after the '60s, and the reaction against established sounds, made for a lot of great music. A beautiful little ballad from 1972: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pte3Jg-2Ax4&feature=kp[/yt] Some perfected pop, also from '72: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxB4weCzqGE[/yt] A two-chord classic: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgRYncR1Nog[/yt]
Of significant historical note--In the closing months of the decade, a new phenomenon emerges: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhbs89294d0[/yt] My sister had the 12" single shown in the video. I recall once having my Star Wars action figures perform part of the song.... A couple of other things that didn't sound like everything else on the radio in 1979: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfYfd7U8xlo[/yt] (Baton-twirling 1979 Stevie is droolworthy.) [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgvfRSzmMoU[/yt]
Some intra-decade covers: Linda Ronstadt covering Warren Zevon (first time I ever heard a Syndrum): [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cd2_LKoTYKw&feature=kp[/yt] Talking Heads covering Al Green: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ar2VHW1i2w&feature=kp[/yt] Dave Edmunds covering Elvis Costello: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTkhBuNdMgY&feature=kp[/yt]
[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou0Tk_Bl3Bs[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPbG1-wLs8U[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdLPI6XhEN8[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEea624OBzM[/yt]
And here's Warren performing the song in a fairly raucous (and probably wasted) manner: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KgTpAJBIqU[/yt] But speaking of intra-decade crossovers: Bowie covering Springsteen: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2ym3J5iEcQ[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDCvS0D5Yb0[/yt]
[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsPh-EgH65M[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpA3NVafsdo[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msAcTMKMSKA[/yt]
Not the biggest hit of the 70s but he did live on the other side of our street before he hit his fame. [yt]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB8G0SFmJ1g[/yt]
I'd previously overlooked that one of my favorite Doors tunes gave its name to their 1971 album: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Nxjc9NjMiE[/yt] (The video was created in the '80s by the recently-departed Ray Manzarek.) Also hailing from California (yeah, that's a lame-ass transition): [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTfkG3wrAEI[/yt] And although most of their fans wouldn't have heard of them until at least '83: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APPhaCUZj-0[/yt]
Journey "Wheel in the Sky" 1978 I will never get tired of this song [yt]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxGEVIvSFeY[/yt]
Wow. I haven't heard that song in going on 40 years, and as soon as it started to play I knew all the lyrics. With John Doe of X playing the creep in the video. Anyway, here are some big ones around my house growing up: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6siRVk67Epw[/yt] Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band (over half the video is Albert Lee tearing it up): [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jn77ZraSZ8A[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAgDDr_pZlI[/yt]
Hands down, one of the most beautiful women to ever walk the earth, and one of the greatest singing voices ever. Last year, my daughter and a bunch of her friends saw Emmylou at a festival. My daughter said that all the boys were in love with her. They couldn't believe she was close to 70.
Speaking of country and speaking of intra-decade crossovers, here's Hank Jr doing a little Marshall Tucker: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd9OkjATHwI[/yt]
I did not know that! And it all started with bread commercials. Very pretty country, Ouray. She's something. I see her any chance I get. The Harris/Ronstadt/Parton Trio album is one of my all-time favorite collaboration projects.
Some choice selections from 1970: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU2U3QAUGak[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0kypyGSKsE[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lxjaq1R3AYw[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm2YyVZBL8U[/yt] [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yUSGvm4BXA[/yt]
Is this the best song of 1970? For my money, yes it is. [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Z66wVo7uNw&feature=kp[/yt]
