I feel like it's fallen under the radar a bit, but I absolutely loved the Doctor's brief confrontation with Hitler in this episode. The defiant and disdainful tone with which he says "It's a police telephone box. From London" was absolutely perfect.

I didn't think I could love Smith's Doctor any more than I already did.

Any reason the Doctor who tackles injustice and tyrants didn't care to do anything about Hitler? Would have appreciated a line from him about why he won't overthrow or prevent Hitler. Let alone why he freed the Ood but not the blacks.
"Fixed point in time" get out of jail free card, probably

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this idea that River and the Doctor are in timelines moving in opposite directions.

Okay, the first time the doctor saw her was in the library, which was the last time she saw him. Naturally, because she then croaked. Right.

So, shouldn't the first time she saw him be when she regenerated into River from Mels? That was River's "beginning", was it not? So, since it's the beginning of River's timeline with the Doctor, it must therefore be the end of the Doctor's with her. Which means he should never see her again. Shouldn't it?

Or, if you consider all of her regenerations to be "River", then from now on the Doctor should only see her younger selves (Mels, Melody, any others in between), right?

And I presume what he told her in this episode is his name. And he gave her the TARDIS diary. What about the sonic?

They're not moving in opposite directions, they're just out of sync, at least that's my understanding.

I could swear it was said to be opposite at some point. Some fan even made a timeline depicting it. :/

They are grossly out of sync, and it's often 'in reverse,' at least for all the key moments. His first meeting with her was her last with him. His first kiss with her was her last. etc.

I asked a similar question a few pages ago.

River always says "back to front", which implies reverse order, so unless they find a way to break the cycle, they shouldn't be able to meet again, at least as the Doctor & River.

Think we can take it that was a bit of poetic license with their situation, they said before it was out of order, which seems more plausible since they "sync diaries".

Yes-- the same episode where River says "back to front" shows it to clearly not be the case, as River sees the Old Future Doctor in that story, but it's not her first meeting with him.

there's not enough references in the episodes to make a clear timeline. It was never said they were just moving in opposite directions the timeline was clearly jumbled from her 2nd appearence.
Beside the phrase "back to front" can be used in converation withouth being literaly backward.

It's like The Doctor said in The Big Bang "Time travel, you can't keep it straight in your head. So yeah, they never meet in the right order which is something Amy said, I believe.

I've never understood why some fans are so woodenly literal. She's obviously speaking in generalities, not making a comment that each and every adventure they have is in reverse order with respect to each other. I'm reminded of Logopolis, "...but the Logopolitans do it standing on their heads." "??? They don't use computers." "Standing on their heads is an expression."

Who knows? He might have had a hand in freeing the blacks, but we have never seen that story yet. He's a time traveler, he can free people in the past after he frees some in the future if he wants to.

Something I noticed on second viewing: Just after Amy & Rory appear in the TARDIS after being rescued, we can see the Doctor's usual tweed jacket hanging on the coat rack.

Also, the novelty of the Amy intro has worn off. It was fine at the beginning for the benefit of new viewers, but I think they can drop it now. I miss having the opening "sting" of the theme starting right at the end of the teaser.

I'm not sure I know what this is referring to. What "Amy Intro" ?

I always think of the end of Genesis of the Daleks. Even though the Daleks were not completely destroyed, he refers to the good that their evil brought by bringing people together to fight them. Hitler is sort of the same way. Humanity learned something from World War II they could not have by the Doctor meddling with time. Arguably, it's a fixed point. Certainly, it is a major point of planet Earth history that is entirely internal. Not something the Doctor is quick to interfere with. Probably the only comparable thing I can think of the Doctor was involved in were things like the Silurians (and the Flesh) in which case his goal seemed to facilitate history rather than change it.

It's a BBCAmerica thing...we get the opening bit of the episode, then a little diddle about Amy, the Doctor, and the TARDIS, then the opening credits. It's new this year. At first, I liked it; now, I'm over it.
