Was Hitler involved? Check.
Did someone want to go kill him? Double check.
Was it the main goal of the start of the episode? Check.
Was it a cool title that drew attention? Check.

The title fit. Deal with it.

While I'm not entirely sure if you disagree with me or not anymore (:p), I'll point out the limited reason I brought it up. Someone says "this episode is stupid, I pine for the days when ___ was in charge" I think it's perfectly valid to point that when ___ was in charge, similar stuff happened. It strikes me as hypocrisy otherwise.

Heh, I don't know what happened there I think my brain went into its own paradox or something. I think we're all good.

First I got smacked in the face with a big glob of annoying when Amy's bestest friend in the whole world, who we've never heard of before, shows up in a red sportscar with police in pursuit and pulls out a big gun before demanding they go off to kill Hitler.

I hear you there, and its my primary complaint with Torchwood Miracle Day pulling out "The Family" from Jack's previously unknown past.

But strangely, I can accept Mels ingratiating herself into her parent's life because the fact that we've never heard of it until now was because it never existed before. Just like The Doctor messed with Kazran Sardick aka Scrooge's life by rewriting it, Mels rewrote time to grow up with her parents. It serves to showcase how the Timelord DNA has transformed Melody into someone who is very smart and very capable of manipulating Time.

Well I thought it was something horrible like the Trickster brigade but now that I think about it the Trickster brigade makes whole lot more sense then "The Families"

Some good stuff in this one, but I didn't love it. I just liked it. Still, nothing wrong with that. :D

The sidelining of Hilter was great, I have to admit - there are times I like having my expectations subverted, and this was such a time. Hehehehe.

And as for smacking Hilter in the gob... Rory. Freaking. Pond. The man, the myth, the nose, the legend. Oh, yeah.

Didn't care for Mels, even though I figured she may turn out to be River. I was glad when she did, TBH. And as for the Mels retcon - ah, whatever. Clumsy, but fair enough.

River's manic regen/brainwashed assassin stuff was energetic and funny, but I'm glad it was only for a short time. She's full of beans at the best of times, so more of CrazyRiver taking things Up To Eleven would become tiresome, I think.

So - glad it's back! Onward!

I'm actually really glad that Hitler was just a sideshow and that the episode wasn't about him. Going back in time to kill Hitler and prevent World War II is one of the oldest time travel cliches in the book.

I enjoyed the hell out of this episode, though I am glad that we're getting back to some (mostly) standalone adventures to give us a bit of a breather before the inevitable two-part season finale featuring River again.

Pun intended? :shifty:

I enjoyed that too. I just wish Mels had a reason to want to go back in time to kill Hitler and not even try to kill him.

Absolutely. :techman:

I loved the episode! At first, I had the same complaint a lot of you had with Mels just kinda showing up. There should have been some kind of indication that she existed before. But I totally forgave that due to the episode kicking major ass. Now my only wish for the show is that they slow down just a little bit and do a good standalone so the Doctor and Amy can spend more good-natured time together.

Another thought that has occurred to me. Amy and Rory have been on Earth "all summer." Presumably, this means summer 2011. Assuming Miracle Day also takes place summer 2011, are they currently immortal, or does this take place after Miracle Day wraps up?

Leadworth was mercifully exempt from that over long story. Alternately, the story might have happened prior to Amy and Rory returning. I wouldn't worry too much about any continuity unless the points are specifically brought up in their respective shows.

Torchwood is taking place on an Alternative Crappy Earth.

Amy and Rory live together for two months before they get the letter and since they arrive in a school bus I'd say it's closer to the fall than the summer.

Pretty underwhelming to be honest. Was there a reason beyond being an attention-grabbing WTF moment that this episode was titled "Let's Kill Hitler"? Hitler is pretty much forgotten about after Mels regenerates into River and being set in Nazi Germany isn't relevant to the plot at all. It could have been set anywhere, anywhen with any evil tyrant. A more appropriate title would have been "River Song Begins."

Sigh...people are so over literal.

The title is entirely appropriate, because Melody is, for all, intents and purposes Hitler. She's a worse war criminal than Hitler himself, which is pretty much spelled out for us in the episode.

The title takes on a layered meaning. Mels says "let's kill Hitler." This is an irony considering the events about to transpire. She is, in turn, killed by Hitler. She regenerates into the version of Melody we know - or rather a version we don't know. She attempts to kill the Doctor - who is, because of the nefarious purpose for which she was trained, "Hitler" to her - or rather to Mme. Kovarian and company. In the end, she appears to have a change of heart. Ergo, Hitler, (eg. Melody the psychopath) has been "killed," in a metaphorical sense, and River (as we know her) comes to stand in her place.

Do we know Miracle Day happens during this summer? I thought it was cool that Captain Jack mentions the Doctor in Miracle Day.

As for Let's Kill Hitler I thought it was a pretty good story. Now if the powers that be would address the other Timelord running around (Doctor's daughter) I will be a happy camper.

Except that that's completely artless and the kind of dumb, on-the-nose title Enterprise would have used, plus it spoils the whole plot of the episode which, in case you forgot, was intended as a surprise.

Do you consider Batman Begins to be an artless, dumb, on-the-nose Enterprise style title?

Still, I have to disagree with that assessment. Had this been an Enterprise-style title it would have been something simple like "Mels" or perhaps "Assassin."

How about "Every River starts with a Drip"?

Limits can be broken at any time by reintroducing the time lords though.
Well River only regenerated twice, so perhaps she gave the Doctor all her remaining ones (minus the one to revive him) so that he now has 11 more.

Well, I'm fairly certain that Melody would have had to have regenerated three times. The first would be when she regenerated as a little girl in 1969. The next would be when she regenerated into a toddler-aged incarnation known as Mels; given that Mels appeared to be Amy's age, that would imply that she regenerated into her Mels incarnation in approximately 1989. And then, of course, she regenerated from Mels into River.

(I'm fairly certain this makes her the first character to literally be given a new name each time she regenerates.)

its possible the child Melody who regenerated in NY was taken to Leadworth (and to the right time) by the eye patch woman (or person working with her) possibly in those years, she was trained, then dropped off at Leadworth (now Mels) to meet the Doctor, and one day kill him.
