5YM movie

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Posting this here because I want the answers of those who follow this board more than the movie boards....

Suppose that instead of TMP, a TOS film was made to take place during the 5 year mission. With series-aged characters, red yellow and blue uniforms, etc.

Rules

* Don't say Kelvinverse films - that's cheating - TOS (Captain, not Admiral) Kirk and crew, complete with Shatner's Kirk who knows his father

* Don't say "The Menagerie" either - though film length, it didn't have that ensemble feel, or a lot of action, and wasn't as much about them as it was about Pike.

What would you want to see in it?

They'd probably just remake one of the episodes. "The Changeling", for example. :p

It would depend upon the budget. I'd like to see how the TOS artists would have approached future Earth. Seeing the world that launched the Enterprise was one of the things I loved about the Kelvin movies, but I know it's miles away from how Gene wanted Earth portrayed in the 70's (*insert nudist paraside/pet tiger comment*)

Had the show been more successful in its original run, we could have seen a feature film spin-off while the show was still on the air...see the 1966 Batman film, which was used as an opportunity to work in elements that were out of the show's budget, like the Batcopter and Batboat. So for Trek, a larger-scope adventure with more/better aliens, more/better effects, more/better ships...maybe even an earlier makeover for the Big E herself.

I would have loved to see what kind of Earth they had in mind back then. Like how much wild nature they'd be left on it. The whales went extinct but did they manage to save the other species in danger today? See someone, maybe Kirk or McCoy visit his parents on Earth for example.

Well, regardless of what you want, the board is arranged by subject matter, not by fandom. Putting it in bold letters doesn't make any difference either.

This particular topic is fine here. But if you post something in the future that belongs in another forum, it will be moved.

Carry on.

Technically, the "whales went extinct" wasn't canonized until STIV (and even then, it was only the Humpback species -- at least that's all we hear on screen).

If it's partially taking place on Earth, it somewhat limits where they can go from there when called out to avert a disaster. Unless it's a flashback scene or they visit, get the call, and then flash forward to a few days later.

Hmm.. what would I like to see... or what would have actually happened?

Planet of the Titans does make for an interesting idea and it does seem to fit in just fine with the TOS style.

The film involved Starfleet competing with the Klingons for claim to the supposed homeworld of the mythical Titans, a technologically-advanced race long thought extinct. As the planet is pulled into a black hole, the USS Enterprise must also face off against the Cygnans, the alien race responsible for the Titans' disappearance. Ultimately, Captain Kirk is forced to take the Enterprise into the black hole to defeat the Cygnans, a decision that sends the starship and its crew backwards in time thousands of years and into orbit around Earth. After introducing fire to the primitive Humans living at the time, Kirk and his crew are revealed to be the legendary Titans. (The Making of Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

The time travel element might be a bit much and could bog the movie down at the end. That might need reworked a bit.

Roddenberry is a bit of a one-trick pony. Once he gets an idea, he mines it to death. In the early 70s after Star Trek he wrote 3 sci-fi movies or pilots that ultimately failed - Genesis II, Planet Earth and Strange New World. All 3 depicted a civilization on Earth rising from the ashes of a nuclear holocaust. So, perhaps a TOS movie wold have fit that mold - The Enterprise encounters yet another parallel Earth. This particular planet is recovering from a nuclear war. An evil totalitarian government is battling for control of the planet. The crew of the Enterprise (are forced to?) help the more benevolent Pax civilization defeat the totalitarian regime and establish a utopian government based upon pacifism, science and egalitarian progressive concept modeled after the United Federation of Planets. So, we're talking a remake of "The Omega Glory" without all the Yang and Coms nonsense and, instead of a deranged Starfleet Captain we have a deranged native of the planet (or we have a deranged Starfleet Captain after all and he's the one that helped rebuild the totalitarian regime years ago and the Enterprise was sent to investigate his disappearance. We're now crossing "The Omega Glory" with "Patterns of Force").

Yep, I think that's itl A big budget movie that remakes and combines "The Omega Glory" with "Patterns of Force." Instead of the Yangs vs the Coms we have the peace loving Pax vs. a re-imagined Soviet Union.

I know you said to not mention the Kelvin Timeline films, but Star Trek Beyond is about maybe 35-40% of what I would do. Pick up in the middle of the 5-year mission (after Season 3 of TOS) where they've been docked at a space station receiving upgrades (to give an in-universe explanation to the minor redesign I'd give the interior and exterior of the Enterprise), but then a situation reveals itself and the crew is dispatched to deal with it. As for 'what' that situation is, I don't. I'm no writer. ;)

Just off the top of my head...

After the destruction of Organia by the Klingon Empire, the galaxy is approaching all out war. Kirk and crew must revisit some of the important allies they made during the series to enlist aid for fear of the Guardian of Forever falling into the wrong hands. Of course the Romulans are behind it all, but we'd get to see a more realized galaxy of lifeforms and civilizations then they were able to present on TV. Political drama, a race against time, and an exciting climax with the ultimate outcome of peace and trust between one time enemies. Roll credits.

I would expect a more diverse crew and for Spock to not be the only alien in the village or in the senior command team. If a ship is exploring to represent the Federation then represent as much of the diverse planets as it can. Also Uhura should be Head of Operations not just Chief communications officer. (I believe the latter reports to the former? ) And an alien, non humanoid officer be Head of Tactical and Security. Plus less human males running Starfleet, less Terrencentrism. As for the plot no idea.
