Not this whole mess again, Doctor Who is Doctor Who, it went off the air for a while and came back in 2005. It's the same continuation of the same series.

That's certainly one way of looking at it. But it's not the only way of looking at it, and if one accepts that other people can legitimately operate from different premises from one's own, one can accept that the phrase "very first episode" can legitimately refer to "Rose" rather than "An Unearthly Child."

That's the way Moffat looks at it.

Yes, we've established that some people think they're the same program and some people think they're two separate programs with the same title. Moffat just happens to be amongst the former.

Finally got round to watching it again last night and I can't stop thinking of things througout the series that play into this.

I never thought of that. At the time it seemed like yet another tedious Phil Mitchell "I'm 'ard I am" bit like we've suffered since Eccleston, but actually it ties in quite well.

Oh yeah and before I forget, the other thing I loved about this episode was the Cyberman clenching his fist in a very Classic Cyber pose...shame he didn't say "Excellent!" as well but you can't have everything...

Something I don't understand - why should Auton Rory, or any of the autons for that matter have the illusion of self-consciousness? 'Cause in the past the Nestenes never operated that way; the Nestene consciousness controls them all from its central location, it posesses each plastic dummy just like it can do to any piece of plastic anywhere. There should not be any kind of individual 'self identity' because they are all just being controlled by the one mind.

The Nestene adapted. Probably with help from other members of the Alliance. Sontarans and their self-aware clones spring to mind.

Also, most Autons aren't based on real people. The were all based on Amy's memories. Memories she obtained from reading a book with drawings of the soldiers. So, those drawings are what the Autons were designed to be for the Romans. Thus, no identities except for those created by the Consciousness. Rory, however, was based on a real person. So, thus his ability to bring forth his identity. Unlike the Romans, he was originally a self-aware being.

At least, that's how I took it, anyway...

I noticed that too!!

I looooved that, as that's how the Cybermen have always been on Doctor Who. The "Excellent" would have been the icing on the cake, of course...
