50th Anniversary Rewatch Thread

So... that's the end of another season, the next one starts in little over 5 months so mark your calendars for the 20th of September! :techman:

In the meantime, feel free to discuss the already aired episodes, or catch up on reruns during the off-season! ;)

The Doomsday Machine is one of Star Trek's best episodes but as a kid I found it quite boring as I remember! But after seeing it again in the 1979 repeat season I couldn't believe how good it was! Now it's always in my top ten of Trek episodes!

I dunno. I saw Doomsday Machine when I was seven or eight and it was definitely a highlight. It stood out enough that I knew "Spock! Transmit now!" in TMP was a riff on DM.

You want an episode that was boring when I was seven? Space Seed! When Wrath of Khan came out I had no idea that I'd even seen it!

I think I missed the weekly new planet or such because I never really enjoyed any of the episodes that were set in space as a kid!
JB

The first time I saw it as a kid it was The Corbomite Maneuver in German dub, and I don't speak German, so I had no idea what was going on but I liked that it was in space and very colorful. I do remember thinking "Silly Germans, they had an old guy dub for the kid." :D

Yes but Rojan said that his vessel was destroyed by the barrier and that they escaped to the nice little planet that Kirk found them on! Which begs the question of how did they escape from the ship and if they transported down then how could a transmitted signal penetrate the barrier as Rojan told us later on?
JB

Or when they inhabited the human(oid?) shells they were so fond of insulting while being stuck in them. (Never mind Spock's attempt to use a winded litany to describe what takes less time to show in a Jefferson Airplane video...)

I liked the continuity with the crushed isohedron cubes as they are handed over. Would have been a very easy blooper to make...

"By Any Other Name" has a lot of great dialogue that only TOS can do, but the basic storyline is remarkably generic, while creating a discontinuity regarding the barrier (passing through it without being damaged, did the Federation really be able to come up with proper defenses against it in such a short period of time?). Which is okay, Trek V: TFF thought the barrier was in the center of the universe.

Those were cuboctahedrons. Not icosahedrons. Not dodecahedrons. Cuboctahedrons, dammit!
:brickwall:

(If we didn't nitpick, we'd lose our geek cred. :) )

Just a reminder, the show comes back for its third season in a month, and so does this thread. :techman:

Hope to see the regular folks back, and of course anyone else who wants to join in on the airdate anniversary rewatch fun is more than welcome! :)
