50th Anniversary Rewatch Thread

Also, the "Starbase Operations" voice on Spock's tapes...is that Roddenberry? Also, "Dr. McCoy, report to Transporter Control"...sounds like the same voice.

There's a similar quality, but, no, it's a different person altogether. Memory Alpha identifies him as Tom Curtis. He also did the voice for Jon Daly, captain of the Astral Queen in "Conscience of the King."

I have to tell you, I love the way you do your best to restore the previews to their original form. It's great to see how they most likely looked. I was curious if you would find a way to restore Nimoy's "week" to the Part preview. If you listen carefully, you'll hear him say "you'll learn next ---k, why returning Captain..." Because, all references to "week" had to be edited so as not to confuse people watching it daily. I can see that would probably be impossible without having an audio clip of Nimoy saying "week."

Speaking of which, would it be bad form to tell you that you neglected to put the "Next Week" subtitle on this one? :) Sincerely, I watch every one of these, so thank you!!! This is one of those things I wish CBS/Paramount would have restored to the series for the 50th anniversary set.

I thought about that when I edited it, but thought it would be redundant since he said it verbally. I'm trying to think like the editors more or less. Glad you're enjoying them!

That's terrific. Well done.

Thank you kindly, Tallguy.

This is a fine episode. I also like the altered voice of the keeper. I guess I am just used to that. I also wonder why Scotty or Sulu are not around in this episode. Scotty is around later in the transporter scene though. Instead we get Hanson in charge of the Enterprise when Spock hijacks the Enterprise. It is amusing to see McCoy defend Spock and then have to have him arrested. I also remember that Deforest Kelley was only on part one but is credited for being in part two as well. I wonder why that is? Because I remember that Kelley did not appear in five episodes. The first two pilots, What are Little Girls Made Of, Errand of Mercy and The Menagerie Part Two. I also find it amusing that in production order episodes Kirk and Spock were both arrested and put on trial. Kirk in Court Martial and Spock in The Menagerie.

"The Menagerie, Part 2", Episode 12, November 24th

Tonight's Episode:
The thrilling conclusion of Spock's trial. Will he be able to finish his incredible tale? Will Perry Mason find the real culprit or is Spock heading for the chair(and not the command kind!)? What's real and who isn't? Will you be tuning your TV sets to Talosian mind waves to find out? Blink once for yes, twice for hell yes!

The opening with Spock making his guilty pleas is kind of arty...it reminds me of old-school comic book splash pages that depicted a symbolic scene that didn't literally take place in the story. Indeed, later in the episode the tribunal votes on Spock's guilt, which would be pointless if he'd already pleaded guilty.

At the beginning of the fortress scene, that weird face that Vina makes after Pike says, "It's starting, just as it happened two weeks ago"...I think she's supposed to be winking at him to go along with it, but it's so exaggerated....

The framing story excuses for continuing to watch the pilot get progressively lame as the episode goes it. It wouldn't have been as dramatic, but it might might have made more story sense if the transmission were presented as a briefing about what they were getting into.

It's something how even the Talosians take breaks in their programming...but they sure are wasting a lot of valuable ad space.

They blasted the hell out of the elevator entrance, but the elevator still works.

Yeah, he pleads guilty, they go on, then they vote him guilty and then... they still just go on with the trial?
It's like, how much more guilty can he get? And the answer is none, none more guilty.

While the framing story was necessary to move the plot along in the first part so we finally get to watching the original pilot, the added scenes here are mostly just superfluous. They just stop the action every five minutes to recap what just happened.

The ending, besides being somewhat clunky("And more" what?), also proves the "never visit Talos or suffer the death penalty" angle useless, as it shows that Pike and Talosians parted ways on decent terms with them having no further designs on humanity. The fact that the Commodore was an illusion all along shows that the Talosians can reach pretty far out and just trick people into coming there if they really wanted to.

As far as stuff form The Cage, I like The Cage, so I liked it here as well. :techman:

P.S.
There's no new episode next week, Star Trek returns on December 8th with The Conscience of the King.

That, plus they turned down an offer for help because they didn't want humanity to learn their power, for its own good.

And for the first 20 years, watching "The Cage" was the main draw of "The Menagerie"...something that got lost when the restored pilot became available separately.

Funny that they'd air an episode on Thanksgiving, but take the very next week off....

I noticed both those things a few hours ago on BBC America.

As for the Talos IV penalty, I would think it's in place because of how destabilizing it is for anyone to discover the secret of illusion. Reality itself, what is and what isn't, could become up for grabs. It wasn't because the Talosians themselves were out to get us. I'm not sure how the prohibition would stop that anyway.

My Review of "The Menagerie" Part 2 on my blog

Now here is where I had a quandary in my attempt to restore the original look of the preview for "The Conscience of the King." Star Trek was preempted next week, so if the show knew that, which I think they did, they wouldn't have the card say "Next Week." So, instead, I thought it would look like this:

I love the scene where Spock says THE WOMEN! after No. 1 and the Yeomen are transported down. I find myself saying that all the time. I also like the fact that the Yeoman has strong female drives. Sounds like something Roddenberry would write. I think that a Captain Pike series would have been pretty good. Jeffrey Hunter would have been a good lead. I like Captain Pike, Spock, Dr. Boyce and No. 1. Maybe they could have recast No. 1 with a different actor, if they did not feel that Majel Barrett was up to the challenge. Change most of the other actors with Scotty ,Sulu and Uhura and that would have been a good cast. P.S. I am glad that we got Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy, I am just saying that Captain Pike would have been a good series. If we did not have Captain Kirk, who would we compare Pike to?

And airing Thursday night:
"The Jack Benny Hour"

That is the first time I ever heard that. I find it hard to believe, to say the least. I actuially never heard a similarity...

Well according to him it's true but who knows? Why would he say that and how would he know about the part unless he was sort of there?

Same reason Martin Landau said he was the first choice to play Spock, but turned it down. Yet, by all other accounts, Nimoy was the only one they had in mind - until he had his contract dispute.

Found some information about the content of the special here: http://www.entertainmentoutpost.com/apps/webstore/products/show/7007371
(It's from somebody's video sale site, but linked by me strictly for informational purposes.)

There's also a multi-part YouTube video of a Jack Benny tribute special with clips from various Jack Benny specials, if somebody wanted to wade through that to find more segments.

I just took a quick look on youtube and there's apparently several full length uploads of the 1965 The Jack Benny Hour, but not one of the 1966 one. Weird...

Ah well, guess I'll have to go to the future this week and watch some programs of tomorrow, something legendary perhaps... ;)

Agreed but Captain Jon Daly was no Mr.Spock!
